Wuppertal, Germany - 10th September 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

today we visited an arboretum in Wuppertal, the "Staatsforst Burgholz". An arboretum is a collection of trees, sort of a botanical garden containing living collections of woody plants intended at least partly for scientific study. We went to "Staatsforst Burgholz", a woodland area which is situated in both urban area of Wuppertal and also the urban area of Solingen, but only a small part of it.

When World War II was over, there were nearly all trees felled for rebuilding of destroyed city areas and also as firewood.

Searching for fast-growing forest species trees from foreign counties were planted than in this area to study their growth in local weather conditions. Plants from North America, South America, Asia and Europe were planted.

There are several walking paths through the arboretum, of course we chose the longest of them, about 6 km long, displaying a variety of trees from Europe, America and Asia. At the parking lot we found a map of the arboretum area.

We decided to walk along a path showing trees of Northern America. In the background, along the slope different kinds of conifers were planted.

This is the sign we had to follow.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8446/7970629886_32ae7ddf4c_o.jpg

You can find informations about the foreign trees.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8311/7970630118_6c09731a21_o.jpg

The path was covered with clover.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8457/7970630510_fdf2b2fe4c_o.jpg

Our path is meandering through the forest. Look how good "Chief" Emma Squirrel was looking!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8036/7970621936_0523c188c3_o.jpg

Finally we saw sequoia trees.

This was a very interesting trip.

Remscheid, at home, Germany - 13th September 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today Katja helped to me broaden my knowledges in baking. We made bread today!

Our ingredients were whole spelt flour and wheat flour, yeast, salt, sugar, lukewarm water and a little bit vegetable oil.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8453/7987740558_1fff5d7ae2_o.jpg

We mixed each 500 g wheat flour and spelt flour, added about 1 1/2 spoonful salt and  a little bit sugar. We crumbled two lumps of yeast onto this mixture.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8034/7987734815_89fb69bec5_o.jpg

We added about 650 ml lukewarm water and made a smooth dough. It took us about 3 minutes with the electirc mixer.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8308/7987740694_37412df363_o.jpg

Ready. Now the dough had to rest for half an hour. We covered it so it would not dry out.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8173/7987740734_9b53f4f1de_o.jpg

In the meantime I peeked under the lid ... it was raising high ....

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8453/7987740788_2264f0f9cf_o.jpg

... and higher!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8455/7987735017_d041b96bff_o.jpg

We had to knead the dough once more and divided it into three parts which we put on the baking tray.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8033/7987740918_e7102313f8_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8308/7987740984_b29c0c928b_o.jpg

While baking (220°C for about 40 minutes) the breads grew once more.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8036/7987735197_2aa3475256_o.jpg

Enjoy!

Gelsenkirchen, ZOOM Erlebniswelt, Germany - 14th September 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we made a fantastic trip to Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr area. We visited a zoo there, the ZOOM-Erlebniswelt.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8041/7987737095_2b12d8f347_o.jpg

This zoo is specialized in animals from Alaska, Africa and Asia. The whole area is divided into three parts. We started our adventure in Alaska.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8319/7987743050_fbf0c3fe45_o.jpg

Nobody has to starve here.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8035/7987737213_a816965bd1_o.jpg

We saw several bears here: Grizzly bears, Kodiak bears and polar bears.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8036/7987737279_16ca48daf2_o.jpg

The bear was separated from the visitors only by a thick glass panel.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8308/7987737331_6accfb5997_o.jpg

We entered Africa  than!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8448/7987743270_defd81dbb9_o.jpg

It is so cold today that I prefer the comfort of a heated apartment to those huts :D

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8445/7987743344_52500e9ac4_o.jpg

I met Ankole-Watusi cattle here.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8176/7987743408_1a560d4f40_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8449/7987737545_c66c92d23b_o.jpg

The lionesses were very lazy behind their glass panel.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8296/7987743522_5d1f9b05b7_o.jpg

Zebras and antilopes were much more agil than the dozing lions...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8321/7987743594_a2a8e7a214_o.jpg

... as well the giraffes.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8455/7987737705_3a611f1e5a_o.jpg

We entered Asia than.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8178/7987737783_76724c7e55_o.jpg

Here we also found a typical hut.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8300/7987750104_15316f397a_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8447/7987743774_18a4a92412_o.jpg

We had a lot of fun with those monkeys, gray langurs. They were playing endlessly in their enclosure, chasing each other and climbing and jumping from their ropes and nets.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8038/7987743828_aa0b447697_o.jpg

What a fantastic trip!

Remscheid, Germany - 27th September 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we had almost two weeks with really ugly weather. It was cold als also raining the whole day. Today it was a bit better, so we took a walk in the city centre when our host had her lunch break.

First stop was the city hall, originally built in 1906, than partly destroyed in WW II and rebuilt afterwards in a more modern style.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8309/8029459273_c21b003dcf_o.jpg

There is a pillar on the large place in front of it, showing a lion, the heraldic animal of Remscheid.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8313/8029458959_95cc50c647_o.jpg

This is the theatre,

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8455/8029455038_fe321ba30c_o.jpg

The shopping street ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8449/8029455266_ef274954a0_o.jpg

... and the central bus station.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8460/8029455502_2013b0d044_o.jpg

We went towards the central station, here several larger buildings were built in the last ten years.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8175/8029455816_81d1e1b9a2_o.jpg

The whole station area was rebuilt from 2007 until about 2010.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8036/8029460471_82f1a2bb57_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8453/8029460735_c870eeaacb_o.jpg

Back in the city centre Katja showed us this funny fountain.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8033/8029460971_0fb0f73f4d_o.jpg

This is the main entrance of the shopping mall with the tower of the city hall in the background.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8178/8029461251_c0ab25b32c_o.jpg

At the end of the pedestrian area you can find this statue, two large forceps. They are a symbol for the tool producing industry here.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8450/8029457006_53b33fd525_o.jpg

There is a water tower close to the city hall. The silhouette of Remscheid with those two towers close together is visible from all the surrounding cities.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8319/8029461721_42aa393561_o.jpg

On the right side of the next photo you can see the parking and loading zone of the shopping mall.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8177/8029454330_72bc74f3e7_o.jpg

We had to return to the work place than.

Hi mum,
here I'm at the "Sforzesco" Castle! It's quite interesting being here if you think that it was built in the Middle Ages...since yesterday it's possible to see the ceiling of a porch that has just been renovated: look at the red sun painted on it!
