I love dinosaurs, don't you? We went to a natural history museum today. That is a museum that has plants and animals in it that are from prehistoric time till today. They had a large dinosaur exhibit and I had my picture taken with the skull of a T-Rex. He was so huge, I feel really small.
Later today we went to a train museum. There were lots of trains, but they are so big and I am so small that when I had my picture taken, you couldn't see me! There were trains there from when trains first started up to modern ones.

Have you ever heard the song "The Star Spangled Banner"? I bet you have. Well today we are in the place where the song was written. Frances Scott Key wrote it as a poem when he saw our flag flying after a battle during the War of 1812. He was very inspired. We got to see the paper that he wrote it on. My picture is with a copy of the song because you can't take pictures of the original and it is only on display for 10 minutes every hour because it is so old. If you ask Mrs. Hembree, she might have a book about the Star Spangled Banner and I bet Ms. Gibitz would play it for you if you asked.

We spent the day walking around a Civil War battlefield. There were lots of cannons and LOTS of monuments. The one thing I've noticed in the last few days is how the leaves are changing colors. They are beautiful and get prettier every day. Lots of orange, red and yellow. I would love to bring some home to show you, but I'm afraid they would crumble by the time we got home. There are also lots of stands selling pumpkins. So, today my picture is in front of one of the fall displays.

I learned a new word today. The word is trompe l'oeil and it means to trick the eye. Look at my picture carefully. Doesn't it look like I'm standing in front of a statue? It really is the wall of a bridge. I had to touch it to make sure that it was flat because it looked just like a real statue and real leaves. Amazing, huh? Frederick is a very old town and some people painted this flat surface concrete bridge to look like it was an old stone ivy covered bridge.
On to Washington, DC. I am so excited!

You would not believe our day! We took the Metro in to Washington, DC. The train went underground and was so much fun. We decided to see the Museum of Natural History so we could look at all the animals and fossils. There were kids everywhere in the museum! We found out that today was National Fossil Day and lots of kids were there on class fieldtrips. Now for the great part -- I was looking at some fossils, from 15 to 25 million years old, and a class of kids came in. Guess what? They are in 1st grade at a school named Elsie Whitlow Stokes. There are about 320 kids in the school and they have to speak in either English and Spanish or English and French. That means their teachers don't always speak English to them. Wow, that would be hard. They let me take my picture with them while we were checking our some fossils.

I love libraries, don't you? Today we went to the largest library in the world. It's called the Library of Congress and is the "official" United States Library. It has so many different things in it, it is hard to describe. They have books that were hand printed by monks before the printing press was invented. They even have things that are not books! The funny thing about this library is that when you want something you ask the librarian and they get it for you and put it back when you are done. You also cannot check the books out - you have to read them there. That seems so strange. They had a children's room and we got to go there and look at books. It is the only place in the library that you can go get the books yourself. Here I am sitting on a table with some of the things we were looking at.

Today we got to visit the White House. I was hoping I could play with Malia and Sasha or maybe even Bo, but no such luck. Mr. Obama was so busy with visiting dignitaries that we didn't get to see him either. The White House is very pretty inside and we got to see some of the rooms that I have seen on TV. We couldn't take any pictures in there, so my picture today is from the Smithosonian American History Museum. It is me and Mrs H getting ready to make a speech at a podium like the President uses when he gives a speech. Pretty cool, huh?

Another exciting day in Washington, DC. We saw President Obama's motorcade when he was on his way to speak at the dedication of the Martin Luther King Memorial. There were lots of motorcycles and police cars with blue and red lights flashing. Mr. Obama's car had little flags on it. Pretty exciting! We got special tickets to the White House Garden Tour. There were not many flowers blooming, but we did get to see Sasha and Malia's play set and the vegetable garden that Mrs. Obama planted so they would have fresh vegetables. Mr. H and I were happy to get to the Air and Space Museum. We saw lots of old planes. My picture is in front of a mural of the first moon walk. "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." That's what Neil Armstrong said when he stepped on the moon for the first time.

We rode the train in to Washington, DC again this morning. We went to the National Archives, which contains all our countries history! We even got to see the original copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. You will learn all about those when you get older. I had my picture taken with a statue of Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president. I like to think he is reading to me and maybe reading "Abe Lincoln's Hat". I wonder if Mrs. Hembree has that book? I am getting a little homesick and can't wait to see all of you. We will be home in a couple of days. It will take me a while to catch up on my sleep, but I will see you soon.

I am so excited to be coming home and especially to see all of my friends in first grade. We are going to take the Metro train out to the airport. That will be our last ride on the Metro for a while. Boy has it been cool! Our plane doesn't leave until 5:30 at night so we will be getting home really late. In Washington DC the time is 3 hours ahead of Kirkland. We will all be very tired.
Mrs. H took a picture of me in our big bed at the hotel. I sure hope I can sleep tonight. See you soon!
