Llanberis, Wales - 19th June 2011

By: miapearl

Hi Mum,
Today, we've been out Geocaching. The co-ordinates are for Llanberis village, near where the second of today's finds was found.
The first one we found was in a field.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-k6nkQc9M9Lo/ThGK_jKxVFI/AAAAAAAADrQ/qMTzrJLV-YQ/june11geo1.jpg
There are clouds over the hills in the background.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_jPFHoTyA-U/ThGLAUOs7qI/AAAAAAAADrU/ONPztFXF2Wg/june11geo2.jpg
Ouch! The wind blew me off into some nettles. These sting!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j3VIJrYvohw/ThGLMz_a0yI/AAAAAAAADsU/xSYIt4ZZfwk/gwennie06geo1.jpg
A nice view down Lake Padarn. Today, I don't think they'd see much from the top of Snowdon.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Hp7TsAuekHg/ThGLBU-ewiI/AAAAAAAAD1g/ZLWgq79Wycs/june11geo3.jpg
This is a sneaky Geocache.

Bangor, Wales - 24th June 2011

By: miapearl

Hi Mum,
Today, we went somewhere by bus. We went to Bangor. We got off at the top of this hill but the shop is on the road at the bottom of the hill.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-RWgdmtPVUzc/ThGLNbkudkI/AAAAAAAADsY/jMudWI-ThAw/gwennie06bangor.jpg
Look at those clouds, and some of Snowdonia's hills and mountains.

My host's home, Wales - 29th June 2011

By: miapearl

Hi Mum,
My host collected lots of redcurrants from the currant bushes in her back garden. There were too many to eat, so she found a recipe in a book to make sorbet.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FbBWTGOfz2s/ThGLMbOCA6I/AAAAAAAADsQ/Bwv9GIo0uwk/gwenniesorbet1.jpg
First, my host washed the currants and then weighed them. They were then boiled for a couple of minutes in a small amount of water.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3HWEVgaTfbI/ThGLDbOUaII/AAAAAAAADrk/QSt6hUgtztQ/sorbet2.jpg
Then, she added some honey and whipped cream before pouring it into a container before freezing. She stirred it a few times before letting it freeze properly.

Agricultural Show near Caernarfon, Wales - 2nd July 2011

By: miapearl

Hello Mum,
Today is a beautiful day and we've come to the local agricultural show just outside Caernarfon.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-awv45alBcP8/TiLSzgc4C6I/AAAAAAAADuA/mSPnyGH87cY/gwenniesioe1.jpg
The first place we visited was the poultry tent.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rTIITpD0uNg/TiLS0d9b3-I/AAAAAAAADuE/7iXTY5tJWi8/gwenniesioe2.jpg
They had many chickens on display...
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7J0rgv0LPPM/TiLS0xza1VI/AAAAAAAADuI/wGvkk964r0Q/gwenniesioe3.jpg
This one is a prize winner.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8hleXXJqUrQ/TiLS1i2V69I/AAAAAAAADuM/lNfjYvLkFvQ/gwenniesioe4.jpg
Afterwards, we check out the crafts tent. Look at these crafty spiders...
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-iVI8tOvUGNA/TiLS2JdVJ3I/AAAAAAAADuQ/SdPXcAW785I/gwenniesioe5.jpg
And these funny wooden spoons
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-84Onw81YnHY/TiLS23lrTaI/AAAAAAAADuU/Zb6TytjTyf8/gwenniesioe6.jpg
Outside, there were some old tractors.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HKbOorewClg/TiLTMMgkDdI/AAAAAAAADv4/vuAm5I85JWg/sioe1.jpg
I can't reach the steering wheel.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-vlEiYgrLgmg/TiLS3nOjvpI/AAAAAAAADuY/KQwIB4divPU/gwenniesioe7.jpg
They also had different kinds of livestock. These piggies are hot.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_uD2qyENJAM/TiLS4TytqaI/AAAAAAAADuc/h-gDkGr-tH0/gwenniesioe8.jpg
Baa!

Chester, England - 9th July 2011

By: miapearl

Hi Mum,
Today my host was dropped off in Chester (her husband, son and son's friend went to an outdoor adventure park).
The traffic was bad because it was race day.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1FEHuw8LIxo/TiLf_mFaBdI/AAAAAAAADyQ/Ui4ERtlOONg/gwenniecaer1.jpg
Chester hosts horseracing on the flat. The first race is underway. The horses are racing at the back somewhere (not really visible in this photo).
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BLzL1KD3wC0/TiLfllUo_wI/AAAAAAAADwA/Vj9UAf-Ml2E/tgcaer1.jpg
My host didn't come to Chester for the races (she didn't know it was on). We went for a walk around the city walls. Chester lies on the River Dee.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NFvYhDP0uDo/TiLfm0rhb8I/AAAAAAAADwI/aMnuBWjL9Ps/caer1.jpg
This part of the wall was home to the Round Tower....
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-LADi5-FEI-4/TiLfnidWxwI/AAAAAAAADwM/KBR0seynwXA/caer2.jpg
near the Old Dee Bridge.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0_IcdR-n1Fo/TiLfoBzAALI/AAAAAAAADwQ/AfumKobSqTo/caer3.jpg
The stone weir was built in the 11th century, providing water power.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nZh5IZLqo2w/TiLgAF5AOII/AAAAAAAADyU/dxUjOjjTO6M/gwenniecaer2.jpg
we see boats taking people on river trips.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4UIwUVbG0l8/TiLgAqLoKFI/AAAAAAAADyY/Hbe-4YnnkF4/gwenniecaer3.jpg
The weir looks quite impressive.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-asHA3d6th_o/TiLgBglpHbI/AAAAAAAADyc/nR0UR1eL7bM/gwenniecaer4.jpg
Chester was around in Roman times. This is the Roman gardens.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hZpMbjoGy94/TiLgCHlgFMI/AAAAAAAADyg/kNF-Vn-srt0/gwenniecaer5.jpg
This is perhaps the most recognised place in Chester, the Eastgate Clock.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xh-WkORVxP4/TiLgC8eekWI/AAAAAAAADyk/V03zlG22HkQ/gwenniecaer6.jpg
Down below, there are the shops. The city is busy today.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7IDkPbvFckU/TiLgDmYYFPI/AAAAAAAADyo/Kx-SMVdj3S8/gwenniecaer7.jpg
Further round the wall, we come to the bit overlooking the canal.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-S5l6xTHCNaA/TiLgEOsA1mI/AAAAAAAADys/EsWFE4UqQNA/gwenniecaer8.jpg
Another gate. Can you see the fountains on the roundabout?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bY1aA4dwkRc/TiLfo80tZKI/AAAAAAAADwU/hLE9FZ_e2R0/caer4.jpg
We've finished our tour of the city walls and have come back to the racecourse.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-bKJ9hKgSjkI/TiLgExvXLdI/AAAAAAAADyw/olu4D-jnItQ/gwenniecaer9.jpg
A race will be starting soon and the horses are going down to the start.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-m-KxHXqH4-Q/TiLfpn-lfQI/AAAAAAAADwY/aoge0ESsX1M/caer5.jpg
Here they come racing...
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IxLpR-oDWQo/TiLfqXyb38I/AAAAAAAADwc/ET7VgAVoZGA/caer6.jpg
Who is going to win?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-WQOlY8yZ998/TiLfrCDv9fI/AAAAAAAADwg/gaVqm2u6c74/caer7.jpg
A horse with 4 legs and a jockey on board!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0FD4Tburzw8/TiLfr0Nc7bI/AAAAAAAADwk/8zOC6nwMSAU/caer8.jpg
The black and white buildings are another character of Chester.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7XTxcMor1NA/TiLfsbhjYqI/AAAAAAAADwo/ZtJRU4U0ryM/caer9.jpg
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-V2DoADrgL2o/TiLgGN2OCmI/AAAAAAAADy4/pBinQzXAsX8/gwenniecaer11.jpg
Can you see a bit of Chester's cathedral?
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wS924sp__UE/TiLgFa9ZIZI/AAAAAAAADy0/9nHCttCB85U/gwenniecaer10.jpg
There's the clock again..
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oxqpYvSAa9k/TiLgGvwav8I/AAAAAAAADy8/aHILJXoLxhM/gwenniecaer12.jpg
And it is time to make our way to the meeting point to get picked up and taken home!

Anglesey Coastal Path, Wales - 13th July 2011

By: miapearl

Hi Mum,
Today, my host and her husband decided to go for a walk along some of the Anglesey coastal path.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XZd2EtMdYGk/TjM1pWTW3zI/AAAAAAAAD20/oDGHif-vzkg/cemaesgwennie1.jpg
We are on the north side of the island.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UjvF56yr900/TjM1p7I4mHI/AAAAAAAAD24/a0LYpnWQsCE/cemaesgwennie2.jpg
This is the old brickworks at Porth Wen, and made silica bricks for the steel industry.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--XbkusnIzu4/TjM142DQJaI/AAAAAAAAD3o/fPzEmpjrZCg/cemaes1.jpg
We didn't go further down, but my host's husband did.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-I4jopnDVjAE/TjM15hBgtgI/AAAAAAAAD3s/9QC9NtHwC0U/cemaes2.jpg
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ei5-D3ik6uU/TjM17Nm7AGI/AAAAAAAAD30/5HUt9aijKpA/cemaes3.jpg
This is an old lookout at Dinas Gynfor.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-V2SZpU5MDR8/TjM1tEj20TI/AAAAAAAAD28/_2gjUneMXok/cemaesgwennie3.jpg
Can you see the path on the hill over there? That's the route we'll be taking.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XrO7uSUIVWA/TjM1t8rUe4I/AAAAAAAAD3A/lzw7O1d1Kdo/cemaesgwennie4.jpg
This is Porth Llanlleiana, another relic of Anglesey's industrial past. A long way down and then a long way up the other hill!
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1FlWVAd1BPs/TjM1uYcXZDI/AAAAAAAAD3E/geiV9s4TEJk/cemaesgwennie5.jpg
Taking a breather!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-LgxDkvNZSIc/TjM19IqXhYI/AAAAAAAAD4A/LV5jnQFBt_8/cemaes4.jpg
This is the church of Saint Badrig.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7P6CD4r1weg/TjM1-apE8YI/AAAAAAAAD4E/7MxfEjdfFwc/s640/cemaes5.jpg
A panorama.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DUF6mjVTgM4/TjM1vMC-BsI/AAAAAAAAD3I/7LyuGSbJClE/cemaesgwennie6.jpg
This is a nice beach, Porth Badrig. Nearly at the end of the walk. Pleasant day out, apart from my little legs aching!

Caernarfon Castle, Wales - 19th July 2011

By: miapearl

Hi Mum,
Last week, my host took us into town.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Q3E2Bv2sTvU/TjWkboVtHGI/AAAAAAAAD5E/cJUpEFJ3ZEI/gwenniecfon2.jpg
Look what we saw in the Castle...
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-bWqOELtnuas/TjWkapbQpQI/AAAAAAAAD5A/bOE8g0BnGLI/gwenniecfon1.jpg
It looks like a Tardis...
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-TmgDWGvrkLo/TjWky3IJ73I/AAAAAAAAD6Q/hMrl_4CZE1A/july2011cfon.jpg
We didn't have time to go to the castle that day....
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-paSJ4Iho94I/TjWkxoa-8lI/AAAAAAAAD6M/FfsquqyLawM/julycfon1.jpg
But today, we do have time...
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9ycDptKuS5M/TjWkz6ABeNI/AAAAAAAAD6U/HJM2R3XpL88/julycfon2.jpg
Can you see it?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wx3cCeYDamU/TjWk0qCvN_I/AAAAAAAAD6Y/rJbyehcqHoo/julycfon3.jpg
The Doctor Who television series is made (produced) in Wales. The Tardis is visiting some historic places in Wales.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-YvkwbJfzMWU/TjWk1piQ8HI/AAAAAAAAD6c/sNLxZI1qV44/julycfon4.jpg
Time for a look round the castle. Up to one of the towers we came.. The river is the Seiont and comes from Padarn Lake (that's in Llanberis).
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6mQVqexxdZ0/TjWkcmh-fVI/AAAAAAAAD5I/Oi82wH9SvVM/gwenniecfon3.jpg
That's the dais where Prince Charles was crowned the Prince of Wales in 1969.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tXYzN6f84xU/TjWkdnevDII/AAAAAAAAD5M/q2RUMIQFmqs/gwenniecfon4.jpg
Another tower climbed...
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-mMepedOu3Ug/TjWk2lSU6lI/AAAAAAAAD6g/AYeH7nOgAsQ/julycfon5.jpg
Back at ground level for a rest..
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-FSifVK3A9yM/TjWk3hL89XI/AAAAAAAAD6k/sCNnLPCQHFE/julycfon6.jpg
The Queen's Tower..
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-izbAoNzKd7M/TjWk4ngS8hI/AAAAAAAAD6o/Cc5wMt4eIks/julycfon7.jpg
Spiral staircase at the bottom of one of the towers but our little leggies are tired .
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-gJXwnwACFps/TjWk6zN46vI/AAAAAAAAD6w/FxJWYwmXzs0/exhaustedcfon.jpg
Time for a rest!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uzClLPRK7r0/TjWk51fGJ5I/AAAAAAAAD6s/mIL2s0KbGuc/julycfon8.jpg
Cannons!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-c6jSSXgyWsE/TjWkeczvgFI/AAAAAAAAD5Q/gYuSOLMuEXI/gwennietardis.jpg
And then back to the Tardis for one last look before heading home...

My host's mum's house, England - 22nd July 2011

By: miapearl

We have come to my host's mum's house!
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-DxKfTmJO90g/TjWk8soNYkI/AAAAAAAAD60/cX93v915PDU/ants1.jpg
There are lots of ants in the garden. This book says that ants don't like crossing chalk!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-aPPR9HZKA8M/TjWk9vd-JjI/AAAAAAAAD64/QFHWnkPIDxQ/ants2.jpg
There's an ant...
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5Z8ZTyZt7r0/TjWk-14IVsI/AAAAAAAAD68/bKywo6XzSzk/ants3.jpg
It still is in the same section...
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-4JxjaU7lda8/TjWk_6wlFJI/AAAAAAAAD7A/LtjokeePSpQ/ants2a.jpg
Hmm, it has escaped. The ants we've watched seem quite happy to cross the chalk. Back to the drawing board.

Maze in Maize, Whaplode, England - 23rd July 2011

By: miapearl

Hi Mum,
Do you know where I am?
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1cpSWZozJRM/TjWlha-SZiI/AAAAAAAAD8A/tFRtZnIb7tk/gwennielost1.jpg
I am lost in the maze in maize. There is a quiz sheet and questions but the answerboards are hidden throughout the maze.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-VwP1RWVEzxo/TjWlBr0WqXI/AAAAAAAAD7E/M7Cvbxwwtrs/lost1.jpg
On the board there is a letter. When all the answers have been found, these letters make up the answer to another question. My host has obscured the letters.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qFwPc0g099o/TjWlDcgtjyI/AAAAAAAAD7M/NBEYDjEOIFk/lost3.jpg
The theme of this maze is the rainforest.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LAPjhffQvNk/TjWlFSWypHI/AAAAAAAAD7U/oB58-e-bSbw/lost5.jpg
With questions on the rainforest creatures...
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WLnyfVRNyAg/TjWlGAJjjTI/AAAAAAAAD7Y/lZWgXSFpeJY/lost6.jpg
Including butterlies...
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-F8IBF3EhTr8/TjWlHPuCtqI/AAAAAAAAD7c/u8Hlw9M_1R4/lost8.jpg
What's a Binturong?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--bU7DmplVjs/TjWlJNC8QVI/AAAAAAAAD7k/Z-59KgFcAv8/lost10.jpg
Cute...
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-3hsUQcQ2zp0/TjWlKNdC8sI/AAAAAAAAD7o/IWmw6Kdwlxc/lost11.jpg
There's another bridge so we can look across the ma(i)ze.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-I_B1ucdGnyQ/TjWlbWpTFUI/AAAAAAAAD7s/F6KSCF2WBic/s512/lost12.jpg
And a bench at the eye to rest...

Whaplode Drove, England - 24th July 2011

By: miapearl

Today there is a little country fayre at Whaplode Drove, a few miles from where we are staying.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Z5EmT42a1l0/TjWlv0hA37I/AAAAAAAAD84/aJsCBT2YDK0/gwenwhap1.jpg
There are vintage cars on show.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OFh-zBbdIYk/TjWlw7EGCuI/AAAAAAAAD88/o9Jz5LtugOg/gwenwhap2.jpg
And other vintage things.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Sa2xL_tOUI8/TjWlyNiiXXI/AAAAAAAAD_4/abg0RgaIUHw/gwenwhap3.jpg
Not so vintage is this jelly!
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-eJGxQgdeQmg/TjWlzzR_L6I/AAAAAAAAD9I/E6wBt6ehx7o/gwenwhap5.jpg
These jellies will be thrown and hopefully caught! Yay, she caught some.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-GtgyN1KzkKA/TjWly8Uwq7I/AAAAAAAAD9E/0sZIfCcdGrs/gwenwhap4.jpg
Oh dear!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ruhGA_kO3y8/TjWl0w-BnmI/AAAAAAAAD9M/mrU-jb_9BKI/gwenwob.jpg
Unfortunately, not all those jellies were caught in the World Jelly-Throwing Championship. The one organiser has to clear up!

Nottingham, England - 26th July 2011

By: miapearl

On our way back home to Wales, we stopped off in Nottingham. A shop my host wanted to go to was closed, and the caves her husband wanted to see were also closed.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y7VrSsB70JU/TjWmY5aup4I/AAAAAAAAD-c/MEwcZMli1cE/s640/nottingham.jpg
Instead, we had a brief wander around. Could that be Robin Hood?
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qoGNRQrJqFw/TjWmhrtxHxI/AAAAAAAAD_M/jb_QJeFFaGU/nottgt4.jpg
Back in the centre, there was something unexpected. A beach!
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-0-4X4evc5ao/TjWmcpBIKnI/AAAAAAAAD-0/8GYL_YIMCKE/nottgt2.jpg
They also had a mini funfair, and a permanent water feature.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EyQoisfS0Es/TjWmd47SPdI/AAAAAAAAD-4/7aggSyHgsEE/nottgt3.jpg
They even have trams.
