Baxter Springs, KS, USA - 11th June 2011

By: MamiTig

The map from google maps was a bit cryptic and we ended up "taking the scenic route" to Joplin, MO, today. We stopped by a lovely farm, somewhere in the vicinity of Baxter Springs, KS and checked the trucker's atlas that host mom brings along fur just such occasions. We were so happy when we finally got to the "welcome to Missouri" sign because it meant we were on the right track!

Joplin, MO, USA - 11th June 2011

By: MamiTig

DraperDuck went with his host mom to volunteer with tornado relief in Joplin, MO. Host mom helped as a "Personal Shopping Assistance" at the College Heights Christian Church's donation distribution center. That meant helping people who needed food and supplies to get what they need and load it into their cars.

Duquesne, MO, USA - 11th June 2011

By: MamiTig

Host mom said she wasn't going to go look at the tornado damage, but the lady logging volunteers in and out told her she really ought to, to really understand what had happened. The town of Duquesne (doo-shane) was only 2 miles away, and most of it was in the direct path. Host mom and DraperDuck were struck numb, just seeing the edge of the devastation. It all looked like this (or worse), and in a swath a mile wide. :(

Moundville, MO, USA - 11th June 2011

The plains states (which, of course, includes Kansas) are known as "The Bread Basket of America." With all these wheat fields, DraperDuck could sure understand why!

Fort Scott, KS, USA - 11th June 2011

By: MamiTig

After a long day, we stopped for dinner at the Great Plains Deli in Fort Scott, KS. It's locally owned, and host mom says they have the best sandwiches EVER! She got a medium cheese sandwich, and DraperDuck wondered what large looks like if medium is as big as him!

Hidden Haven Camp, Thayer, KS, USA - 13th June 2011

By: MamiTig

Four of the kids were leaving for Hidden Haven Christian Camp for five days, so DraperDuck and the other TVs took the opportunity to tag along and see what summer camp looks like! The kids packed lots of stuff in the car, and they sure seemed excited! We waited a very long time for check in to start, and it was hot. Once checked in, we walked out past a giant wood shed, and the swimming pool was just to the left. The boys wanted a picture by the low water bridge we'd had to cross to get here. The boys were happy to find that their friend also came to camp. The girls had their beds all set up lovely with the quilt and pillow that the oldest had made. It seemed so quiet to leave without them.

Welda, KS, USA - 13th June 2011

By: MamiTig

DraperDuck went along to work with his host mom today and on the way home, she showed him the little town of Welda, Kansas. The population is around 300 and seems to be on its way to becoming a ghost town. This little diner used to be active, but in the last year or so, it closed and all the signs got taken down.

Mmmm, birthday dinner at El Charro; the host family's favorite Mexican restaurant. DraperDuck approves! :)

DraperDuck was so excited to see the birthday girl's face when she saw her huge pile of birthday presents from her mom and grandparents! Draper enjoyed watching her unwrap her gifts!

By: MamiTig

We got stuck in the inevitable summer road construction, just outside of Scipio, KS. DraperDuck enjoyed the view out of the car window.

The littlest kiddo had to get two fillings and a crown. They sure go out of their way to make it lovely and comfortable here.
