Altenberg Abbey, Germany - 10th October 2010

By: olgamaus

Altenberg Abbey  is a former Cistercian monastery in Altenberg, now a part of Odenthal in the Bergisches Land. It was founded in 1133 as a daughter house of Morimond Abbey.

It is called "Altenberger Dom" although Altenberg was never the seat of a bishopric, so this is not technically accurate), is now an interdenominational church used by both Roman Catholics and Protestants.

On the abbey area you can find some nice restaurants. We had coffee and cake in this one.

Wuppertal, Germany - 14th October 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we met Katja's friend Kerstin and took a walk with her and her dog.

When we picked them up at their home we had a look around the garden. Although it is autumn now there are still flowers.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4128/5084799604_3841682695_o.jpg

We went to Wuppertal, to Scharpenacken, a former army training area. This area was used for military purposes until 2004 A.D as a shooting range. Today there is a local recreation area with vast open areas.

A lot of people come with their dogs and let them run and play here.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4113/5084201117_375435c4c5_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4109/5084800274_04024d5931_o.jpg

We went along a valley then and walked to the other side of the valley. There you can find "Vorwerk-Park",  a country park which was created in early 20th century by rich manufacturer, Adolf Vorwerk, as a private park for his own mansion. In 2001 the park was opened for publicity.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4084/5084800404_48afc28a60_o.jpg

There are some outlook points, you have a great overview across the surrounding landscape here.

Leverkusen, Germany - 17th October 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we met Katja's friend Erika. We drove to Leverkusen, a town in Rhineland, to take a walk on the "Obstweg", which is leading along orchard meadows.

Orchard meadows is an extensive grassland-orchard management system, consisting of a meadow with scattered fruit trees , usually mown once or twice a year; now an endangered, species-rich, semi-natural habitat found in cultural landscapes near villages. Unfortunately the weather was not that great.

Our trip started at "NaturGut Ophoven", a manor consisting an environmental education center for kids and adults in Leverkusen. It was founded in 1984 on an old estate in the district Opladen. One of the buildings there once was part of an historic castle complex, built in 14th century. It is one of the oldest buildings in the municipal area.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4131/5097555150_c71ddc11b5_o.jpg

I saw this funny giant flower, made of discarded motorway signs. Can you see the sun collectors? When the sun is shining this flower is turning around - it must be a funny view :D

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4124/5097555364_ab3ffd7386_o.jpg

Here you can see nesting boxes for different birds and also bats.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4128/5097556354_de67bdfba7_o.jpg

Our path was following a creek for some time.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4152/5097556512_5bdd0ae606_o.jpg

These are Heidschnucken, a moorland sheep which you can find in Northern Germany and Northern Europe.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4130/5097556652_e52f54674c_o.jpg

You can find information boards all along the path, telling you interesting facts about fruit-growing and the landscape in common.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5096960457_7b97b86714_o.jpg

Katja loves animals, so we stopped to pet this donkey.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/5096960555_417db32377_o.jpg

We also walked along fields, some of them already harvested and nice hamlets.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4127/5097556974_bc1c772d04_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4124/5096960777_12e8647414_o.jpg

When we returned to our starting point, we had a coffe in the café of Naturgut Ophoven. They have a world map and I showed Squirt my home country.

Hi Mummy,
in the afternoon we took a short walk to the municipal park. A lot of trees already lost most of the leafes. It became really cold within a few days, it is only about 5°C cold.

at home, Remscheid, Germany - 23rd October 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we stayed at home today, having a really lazy day. Katja is knitting socks for a girl in South America and in the afternoon we decided to bake a cake. We made a cake with raisins, but not with "ordinary" raisins. The raisins were put into rum a few days ago :)

Katja printed the receipe and pinned it to the kitchen wall.

The ingredients for our cake are

250 g  butter / margarine
200 g  sugar
1 p  vanilla sugar
salt, lemon peel
4  eggs
100 ml milk
300 g  wheat flour
100 g  starch flour
1  p baking powder
250 g raisins
chocolate icing or sugar powder

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5107935022_eb7326a674_o.jpg

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1255/5107935238_cb01cdd2d2_o.jpg

Those raisins smelled delicious!

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1134/5107935712_27d956bcd1_o.jpg

First we had to grease the baking pan. The baking oven was preheated to 175°C.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4144/5107338883_ae85bd1a82_o.jpg

Katja prepared the dought. First butter was beaten with sugar and vanilla sugar, than the eggs were mixed in, than milk and flour, starch flour and baking powder. At last the raisins were put into the dough.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1188/5107936020_93541a27d0_o.jpg

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1248/5107936362_f4c36e347c_o.jpg

The cake had to bake for about 75 minutes.

75 minutes later ......

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1252/5107339549_32c69965c6_o.jpg

We took the cake out of the baking pan ...

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1082/5107339685_31867ffcea_o.jpg

With its chocolate topping it looked like this:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1045/5107340049_bf3cda0170_o.jpg

Yummy!

We'll taste it tomorrow.

Oberhausen, Germany - 1st November 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we visited an exhibition in Oberhausen, a city in the Ruhr area. The exhibition is called "Out Of This Word - Wonders of The Solar System".

We went to Oberhausen by train.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1391/5136333611_abc22da540_o.jpg

When we reached Oberhausen it was extremely foggy.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/5136736249_2abb3b83e8_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4058/5136736137_af8408f8f6_o.jpg

The exhibition is situated in a gas holder. The whole area which is a leisure park nowadays once was a vast industrial region, mostly mining and steel production until the 1960s. Today you can find Germany's largest shopping mall here and a leisure park.

The gas holder was constructed between 1927 and 1929.  When it was built it was the largest gas holder in Europe stood with a height of 117.5 m and a diameter of 67.6 m.

Today it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage  and serves as an exhibition hall. The present exhibition 'Out Of This World - Wonders Of The Solar System' was named an official project of RUHR.2010, the European Capital of Culture 2010.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4131/5136736379_6483d8f9af_o.jpg

The exhibition describes the solar system as a process of growth and decay. Reproductions of the planetary system,  of the planets and their moons, images of the sun, both historical instruments and modern technology of space research graphically presents the drama of the birth and development of the solar system up to its possible end. The show is centered around the 25-meter sculpture of 'the largest moon on earth.

It was quite dark in the gas holder, it was difficult to take photos. Not all of our photos are of a good quality - sorry ;)

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/5136736593_e72f697198_o.jpg

These are photos of the surfaces of planets.

This is Saturn.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1232/5137341584_ee4172d837_o.jpg

I could see the moon above me.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1342/5136737235_1ff21c9545_o.jpg

This is a German spacecraft, a replication I suppose.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1324/5136336051_e1c6ec2377_o.jpg

We took an elevator to get to the roof of the gas holder. Unfortunately we did not see anything. Because of its height we could have seen the whole Ruhr area if the weather had been better.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4043/5136737931_17b566c9df_o.jpg

We went back to the exhibition.

Mechterstädt, Germany - 4th November 2010

By: iloveletters

And it was a short trip indeed. Already after one day I arrived in Central Germany, in Thuringia or more specifically in the village Mechterstädt.

Still I was happy to see light again.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070200.jpg

My last host olgamaus sent two nice cards and also jelly bears in the envelope. We have already eaten them - thanks a lot!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070202.jpg

I will stay here for the next weeks together with another TV called Peachy Chai.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070204.jpg

We got to know each other and had a look at my travel journal my mommy sent with me.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070203.jpg

See you!

Mechterstädt, Germany - 9th November 2010

By: iloveletters

Well, it is getting dark here really soon each evening so we usually spend the evenings inside and enjoy our time with postcrossing or swap-bot.

Today we got these lovely Christmas calendar packages from a swapper at swap- bot. I am really curious what is inside but we are not allowed to open them before December 1st.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070207.jpg

There was also a Finnish letter in the mail today with some chocolate - yummy!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070209.jpg

And we wrote a lot of postcrossing cards to people all over the world today:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070211.jpg

It is time to go sleeping now. The house cat is so fluffy to sleep beside. Good Night !

Mechterstädt, Germany - 19th November 2010

By: iloveletters

Dear Mommy!

Soon it is Christmas and that is why we started baking cookies on Friday.

We made four different kinds today: 'forgotten cookies', Vanillekipferl, Sahne-Krokant and butter cookies.

First we went shopping for all the ingidients which are here on the table now.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070270.jpg

Then we have to read the recipe:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070273.jpg

Here we are preparing the dough.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070272.jpg

Then we have to cut the cookies....

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070281.jpg

and into the oven. Let's check:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070278.jpg

The first result. Peachy Chai helped me with all the work.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070283.jpg

The next dough has to stay in the fridge for an hour.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070286.jpg

We can use the time to prepare the third kind of cookies, the caramel ones.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Peachy/P1070288.jpg

And into the oven once again:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070291.jpg

This is the dough for the 'forgotten cookies'. They are called like this because you leave them in the oven overnight. That is why I have to post a pic of these cookies later.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070297.jpg

But here is the final result of the other:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070292.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070295.jpg

Wish you could try, mommy!

Berlin, Mechterstädt, Gotha, Germany - 29th November 2010

By: iloveletters

Dear Mommy!

Last week was pretty busy. First we went to Berlin for the weekend.

We did not do any sightseeing because we went there for a b-day party... and we took the time for shopping.

Here is at least a pic of the shopping centre we went to:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070301.jpg

Inside on the ceiling you could see fish swimming around just like in an aquarium.
That was an interesting view!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070303.jpg

It got really cold and winter like here. It snowed!
Look at the white landscape:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070308.jpg

We also decorated the house for Christmas.
Let's take you on a tour:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070345.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070344.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070343.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070346.jpg

At night we light the ornaments in the windows.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070347.jpg

We also hung the christmas calendar we got from a friend at swap-bot. Only one more day before we can open the first package. I am so curious!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070350.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070351.jpg

Yesterday we went to the Christmas market in Gotha.  All over the place and market square you could find stalls and christmas decoration.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070325.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070324.jpg

Here is the town hall of Gotha and the christmas pyramid in front.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070329.jpg

And we went to Mongolia... oh no, of course not!
This is a mongolian yurt next to the Chinese restaurant we went for lunch.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070320.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070334.jpg

And here is one last picture of the cloister in Gotha

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070332.jpg

See you next week!

A dear hello from snowy and cold Thuringia!

Wow, it got really cold here. This morning we had -15°C. I wish I could be home in Trinidad for some warmth! My host would like to come along too .... :)

Well, still the countryside looks great covered in snow.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070383.jpg

This morning we took some time again for Xmas baking.
This time we tried Xmas cake.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Owen/P1070378.jpg

And into the oven...

Oberhof, Germany - 4th December 2010

By: iloveletters

Dear mommy,

It has been snowing here for the last week. So we went to Oberhof last Saturday. Oberhof is THE ski resort in Thuringia. Well, we did not go skiing but went for a walk in the snow.

Here are some pictures or our car drive to Oberhof through the snowy forest. Peachy came with us too.

Yesterday we went to a Christmas party. So first we wrapped the presents.

It was a surprise party so the others would not know who gave them their present.

And we had a very delicious meal at the restaurant: roast vension.
