Remscheid, Germany - 20th September 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
I arrived in Remscheid today. I was welcomed by a whole bunch of ToyVoyagers:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4150/5008843420_c20aa91fff_o.jpg

My new friens are Honesty, Klaus, Vakinas, Twix  and iluaP ruhtrA, and of course my first host Katja. She told me that a little turtle, Squirt, also was a ToyVoyager hosted by her. Squirt is on a holiday trip with her parents at the moment.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4125/5008236843_493ec16461_o.jpg

I brought some presents for my host, she really loves the biro and the sticker. She also loves my diary.

Katja promised me that we would take a walk later in the afternoon.

Love
Owen

Remscheid, Germany - 20th September 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
as the weather was fantastic (after weeks with lots of rain, like Katja told me) we outside to take a walk. The first photo was taken close to my current home, an area in the city with a lot of nice old houses.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4147/5008843672_05b48b6c53_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4107/5008843948_f5bbcfbae6_o.jpg

Remscheid is an old industrial town. Tools are produced here since middle ages. You can find a lot of old industrial sites among older dwellings.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/5008844180_55efbe3573_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4104/5008237547_4818b2599c_o.jpg

The city centre is situated on top of a hill, which is surrounded by valleys with many forests, rivers and creeks and also rural landscape and farm land.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4083/5008844430_d327bed5e7_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4145/5008844548_b8a86a1585_o.jpg

We reached one of the oldest districts in the municipal area than. It is called Hasten. You can find many of those houses here, which are typical for this region, half-timbered houses and houses which are covered with slate, both with usually green shutters and doors.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4106/5008237951_24bd7ced7a_o.jpg

Those houses were usually built from late 1700s years until early 1900s years.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4125/5008238051_22f033a1e5_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4130/5008238299_7e939c7298_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4150/5008238423_0e17d02d05_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4085/5008238507_2c6222258b_o.jpg

In this district you can also find a lot of industrial sites among dwellings.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/5008845380_894204c7d7_o.jpg

They have a little quarter center here with shops, restaurants, banks and so on.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4086/5008238707_36ed3a7368_o.jpg

Those houses on the left side of the next photo are some of the oldest here in this district. They were built extremely close together.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4107/5008238801_d3f5c3fe08_o.jpg

This Patrician Villa was built in 1778/1779 and is one of Remscheid's landmarks. It was built by two brothers, rich merchants. Later the city's mayor was living in this house. Nowadays a museum is situated here.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5008238907_1ea57e25bc_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4084/5008845858_fe6e7b1272_o.jpg

Next we walked through a housing area, mostly you can find one-family houses here.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4088/5008845986_dd7584a471_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4127/5008239279_f2afd77ef1_o.jpg

We came back to the centre of Hasten, here you have many companies and crafts enterprises.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4133/5008846218_b720e63565_o.jpg

When we already were tired from walking so long Katja told us that we would have to walk uphill now, we took a path in the municipal park, which is really large, extending along this hill with the city centre on top.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4153/5008846456_0a87064d34_o.jpg

That was a very interesting first day in Germany, but now I'm tired. I need a banana and than I will probably fall asleep immediately.

Bye
Owen

Remscheid, Germany - 23rd September 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
Katja took me and the little raccoon to her work place. In our lunch break we took a walk in the city centre. Because Katja is working close to the city hall this was our first stop.

The city hall was originally built in 1906, but was nearly destroyed in World War II and than rebuilt in a more modern style. Its tower is 48 m high.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4145/5017539493_fa483eaef2_o.jpg

The large open space in front of the city hall is the market place. A farmers market is held here twice a week.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4127/5017539609_a34aed1aca_o.jpg

There is a pillar with a lion statue on this place. The lion is the heraldic animal of Remscheid. In the background you can see the shopping mall.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4104/5017539391_8fb0ba757e_o.jpg

This is the water tower, close to the city hall. As Remscheid was built on top of a hill, you can see those two towers (water tower and city hall) from far away.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4086/5017539795_43a25e1c68_o.jpg

Those tenaments were painted recently.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4147/5017539895_d6fa5ce5b8_o.jpg

We found this shady playground...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4148/5018145836_11cc4131c8_o.jpg

... and lovely traditional houses.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4154/5017540075_20b1cca864_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4130/5017540143_59c57ac74d_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5017540257_76ef02b3f7_o.jpg

Back in the city centre Katja showed us the central bus station.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4143/5018146234_88f9a36af0_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4113/5017540415_0beff9b258_o.jpg

Here you can see the company building of the local newspaper "Remscheider General-Anzeiger".

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4125/5018146536_ea9469d98a_o.jpg

And this is the public library.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4084/5017540865_a44787881a_o.jpg

We reached the rear side of the shopping mall than. You can also see the city hall tower and the theatre on the left side.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4149/5018146820_5843ed7c10_o.jpg

Katja decided to get something for lunch - we were almost starving. We went to the shopping mall and bought french fries with onions.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4127/5018146910_8bc4475840_o.jpg

Later I was invited by Katja's colleage to go on a short holiday trip with her to Palatinate Forest. Forest sounds great :D

I'm really curious - this forest is a designated nature park and the largest forest area within Germany.

Love
Owen

Hi Mummy,
we made a short stop in Cologne. Close to the central station you can find Cologne Cathedral. Its spires are almost hidden in the fog.

Biosphärenreservat Pfälzerwald-Vosg, Germany - 1st October 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we visited the "Biosphärenreservat Pfälzerwald-Vosges du Nord", one of 15 biosphere reserves in Germany. I wasn't sure if I liked this kind of artwork.

Thankfully this creature was not a real one.

German Wine Route, Germany - 1st October 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we visited a small town, Bad Bergzabern. Here you can see part of the old city wall, it is called "Stork Tower".

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4151/5064559368_38d175d20c_o.jpg

This is the "Deutsche Weintor" (German Wine Gate), which is marking the Southern beginning of the German Wine Route. This route was established in 1935 to connect all vintners villages to boost the wine sales.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4129/5064559434_9254e35553_o.jpg

Those chestnuts must be delicious - they are made of chocolate.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4103/5064559532_efb04c948f_o.jpg

Those mushrooms are only decoration items. I want to visit a real mushroom forest!

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4111/5063946283_1821da56c9_o.jpg

I know this one exactly: It is a highly poisonous fly agaric. (Although there are no flies in sight and this mushroom cannot fly itself). But I know why it is called fly agaric. In the past people cut this mushroom into pieces and put it into sweetened milk. Flies tasted this mixture and died shortly after this.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4091/5063946805_b30c123887_o.jpg

We reached the parking lot of a historic castle. From there I had a great overview later.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4088/5063946341_1e50c9afc8_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4130/5063946483_72e5454486_o.jpg

We enjoyed a local delicacy: Tarte Flambée and Federweisser, the product of fermented freshly pressed grape juice, known as must. The term in principle includes all stages of fermentation from must to finished wine.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4144/5064559924_fbf46d0f4f_o.jpg

I don't know the name of this mushroom, but the whole forest smells like mushrooms.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4131/5063946667_194ee8fd00_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4144/5063946731_2353baca48_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4103/5063946865_0a28a9f8f7_o.jpg

What is this? A  troll aking a bath!

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5063946951_e878ef04c8_o.jpg

Our trip through the forest came to an end than.

today we visited the "Technik-Museum" (Technical Museum) in Speyer. I've seen fascinating things there.

This are not toy cars - they are all on a scale of 1:1.

Remscheid, Germany - 9th October 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
because of the fantastic weather we had to go out in the late afternoon, just to enjoy the warm sun.

I am living in this street at the moment.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4151/5067865759_c03a6bd5b1_o.jpg

The local court is close to my current home, the large building in the middle of the photo.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4125/5068474644_8b6b042e42_o.jpg

We went away from the city centre towards the district "Reinshagen".

Wermelskirchen, Germany - 10th October 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

we walked along a pilgrimage trail today from Wermelskirchen, one of the neighbour cities, to Altenberg Abbey in Odenthal. We followed the valley of the Eifgenbach (Eifgen creek). We walked through beautiful landscape and lovely hamlets.
