Travelog for: Ferda

HI, I'm Ferda, now I live with my mum in the north of Czech Republic, in Usti nad Labem... The town isn't so interesting, but the countryside is beautiful.



I know it, because I went with my mum to the little trip, to the viewtower Erbenka, ... it's only 1 km from my home...I like it very much...

I was hiking today, with my mum and aunt, we were travelling by train and then we were going uphill and downhill, ..... I saw:many cows, some sheeps, view-tower Velky Chlum ...



and the rock Vrabinec...



It was really good day!!! But on the other hand I'm looking forward some experiences from the foreign countries!!!

Hooray! I have arrived in Canada at last!



Another TV, TobiHH, was here to greet me when I came out of my envelope.



It was very bright at first!



Then I showed TobiHH and Ren all of the goodies that I brought from home and told them a little bit about Czech Republic.



I can't wait to go exploring!

For my first trip Ren took me to a nearby town called Bedford to walk along a trail.

The trees are just starting to change colours here.



The trail runs along the Sackville river. Here are some of the pictures I took:









There were lots of bridges!



From one of them I could see ducks!



TobiHH and I sat back for a while and enjoyed.





At one point the trail comes out right by the highway.

There is also a firing range along the trail. Yikes!



It's on the other side of that fence.



I was a little nervous at first, but Ren promised that I was in no danger as long as I stayed on this side of the fence.

Look! A caterpillar! I said Hello.



I went up close to the water, the bubbles were making interesting designs.



Next we went under the highway. I sure hope those columns hold!



The path moved away from the river after that.



Here you can see the targets on the firing range. They're a looong way away from the fence!



We finally came out where we started, at a shopping mall!



Whew! I'm exhausted! Time for bed!

Hello again!
I've been here a week now and it's rained almost everyday! This morning we were able to get out and take some pictures before the rain came though. We went to a park on the Bedford Basin.





In the background you can see the two big bridges that connect the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth. Beyond those bridges is the ocean!



There is a walkway all along this part of the basin so we took it.



There are lots of nice condos and apartments by the water.



Pretty!



Usually there are a lot of sailboats out sailing, but not today.



The railway also winds along the waterfront.



When the path came to an end we followed a road.



It led to another park!



The water is so calm here!



But the sky is not!



We kept on walking to see what we could find. Here is a sailing school. Should I enroll?



We also saw some churches up on the hill.





And Ren says that she wouldn't mind living in this big house!



This is the place where the Sackville river runs into the Basin. That is the river that I explored last week!



There was one more park to visit.



Hmmm... a statue.





I sat in the gazebo for a while and rested.



We went back then to the part where we started. Here I am with the Nova Scotia flag:



The playground is in the shape of a ship here!



I tried out the slide!

Hello!
Guess what? It was raining again today! Where have you sent me to mom? It didn't stop us from going out today though!



On the way we saw lots of pretty views!



We went to visit a tiny fishing town called Peggy's Cove. It has one of the most famous lighthouses in the country. There it is!



We got out and walked on the rocks. They were very slippery!







It's so big!


There is a rumour that this area is haunted by a person that died when they slipped into the ocean.



Speaking of which...

It's the ocean!!!



I've accomplished one of my life missions! It looked a little unforgiving today, but it's still beautiful!



You can see the waves crashing in the background.



Facing the other way you can see some of the buildings in the town.



That big building is a restaurant.



This place is usually full of tourists, but because it was raining we had the whole place to ourselves!



Now it's time for me to get dry and warm!

Hi!
Guess what? Yesterday it finally wasn't raining so Ren took me down to see the Halifax Harbour Walk.

To get there we walked through a place called the Historic Properties.





It is an area of the city full of old buildings. Many of them have become shops and restaurants.



Most of them were not open because it was still too early in the day.



At last we reached the water!



We looked out to see what boats were in the harbour. Here is a Canadian Navy ship:



And the people ferry that will take you to Dartmouth, the city on the other side of the harbour:



There was only one sailboat out. It was probably a little cold for sailing!



This is Theodore Tugboat. He's a character from a children's television show here.



I said "hello!"

There was also one cruise ship who had come to visit!



We stopped to look at this interesting carving. The inscription is all in Latin so we have no idea what it was made for!



In the summer time this area is packed full of people's boats! I guess they are all put away for winter now!



I saw another lighthouse too! You can just make it out on the island behind me.



I enjoyed my walk along the water very much!

Hello!
Sorry that it has taken so long for me to update this! My host has been very busy this week moving into her new house. Anyway, I'm happy that I finally get to share my next trip with you!

I went to visit the Public Gardens, a Victorian style park in the middle of downtown Halifax.



There are lots of caretakers here so this area is still pretty green compared to the rest of the city.



It is missing all of the fancy flowers that it has in the summer time though!



Along the main path there are 3 statues of Greek goddesses.

On Sunday's musicians play in this bandstand.



I took the path to the left...



... and came to a big duck pond!



The ducks were mostly lazy!



There's one coming to say hello!



Next I found a big fountain.



It wasn't turned on though!



There are lots of paths and benches here!

And some flowers that are still alive!



Time to go! Next I'm headed to another place downtown that might be a little bit scary... Yikes!

Hi!
Because it's almost Halloween I decided to explore Halifax's oldest graveyard.



This lion stands guard at the entrance!



Here is some info about it:



This graveyard doesn't really seem that scary now.



Especially when the sun is finally shining!



We wandered around looking for interesting stones.



This one was used like an advertisement for the carver. See all the different fonts and pictures? People would chose the one that they liked the best for their own stones.



This is Ren's favourite gravestone because the skull on top looks so silly!



The stones with skulls on the top are the oldest. Later gravestones have urns on the top like these.



Now here's one that looks scary! Yikes!



I was feeling a little scared after looking at that one. Even though the tour guide said that the area was not haunted.



Then I was distracted by a pretty building in the background.



I went to get a better look. It's a cathedral called St. Mary's Basilica.



Once I went back to the graveyard I was feeling much less scared.



Nope! There is nothing to be afraid of here!

Hello!
Today I met a new Toy Voyager! His name is Fiete!



He is from Germany and he had lots of postcards to show me!



I showed him around Ren's house a bit while she was busy unpacking. It's such a mess right now!



Then we met a horse and went for a ride!



We also met a witch! She was very nice though!



She even gave us Halloween candy! Yum!



We had a lot of energy from all of that candy so we went outside to play.



There are still some pretty coloured leaves to be found!



Afterwards we spent the afternoon looking out the window and being lazy!

Hi!

Today Fiete and I went to go see another cemetery. (There sure are a lot of them around here!)



This one is special because some of the Titanic Victims are buried here.



We followed the signs!



Here it is. This is the place where the Catholic people were buried. It is the smaller of the two grave sites in Halifax.



The stones are all the same.



Many of them do not have names on them because when the ship sank they didn't have anything with them to identify them.



Here is some information.





This stone does have a name. Wenzel Linhard was a 3rd class passenger from Austria, aged 32.



It was just starting to rain so it was time to go!

It's Halloween!

Today Fiete and I had lots of fun playing in the candy bowl while we waited for Trick or Treaters to come to the door!



Then there was a knock on the door. We were kind of surprised because it was still very early. When we opened it we didn't see children in costumes, we saw Barney! He has come to visit for a while!



We all decided to help Ren carve some pumpkins.



They were pretty small so it didn't take too long before they were empty!



While Ren cut out her pumpkin's face we helped to separate all of the pumpkin seeds from the pumpkin goo so we could bake them.



Ren finished her pumpkin!



And the seeds were ready too!



Yum!



We went into a dark room to try out Ren's Jack o lantern.



Her mother made a silly face on the other pumpkin!



After all of that hard work it was time to sneak some candy!



Then we put the pumpkins on the front step.



There was a skeleton out there too! Yikes!



Ren's mother dressed up like a witch to answer the door but she couldn't find her hat!



We hung out with her for the rest of the evening waiting to give out candy.

Hello Again!

Recently the city that I'm staying at experienced the first snow of the season. It was kind of yucky and depressing looking but then it it warmed up a lot and all the snow disappeared!



We decided to take advantage of the nice weather so Fiete, Barney and I went to a place called Point Pleasant Park.



It is a great place to see the Atlantic Ocean.



Facing the other way you can see the big cranes that load and unload cargo ships.



This area used to be a big military bastion. From here the soldiers could see any ship that was entering the Halifax harbour. There are remains of this all over the park.





There are also lots of monuments honouring the military along the water.






And there are lots of stories to read about different battles and events.



Us TV's discovered this little canon and made up our own battle story! (We won of course!)



After that we moved away from the water and climbed up a really really big hill!



At the top of the hill there is a tower!



(Whew my little legs were tired from the the hill!)





I wonder if there is a princess up there? I called out but didn't get an answer!



Next we walked to another place where the remains of the fort still stand.  On the way we met some seals!

There was a really big cannon here!



You really can see well from way up here! No one is attacking the city today!





It was starting to get dark so we made our way back down the hill to catch our bus but we missed it! It was okay though, we just sat on the beach and waited for the next one to come.



And we watched all of the lights come on across the water.



It was a really fun day!

Hi!

Recently I travelled to a place called the Shubenacadie Canal. It's located in Dartmouth, a nearby city that's full of lakes. The canals connect all these lakes together and were very important for transportation before there were many roads. This part of the canal system is now a park.



Here's what is on the sign:



The lake that I started at was small but full of ducks!



Hello ducks!



There is a trail along the canal so I took it.



In the old days this water would have been full of canoes and busy people.



There used to be simple houses along the water too but there is not much left of them now.  The rocks behind me used to be a small house.





The trail went up much higher!



There used to be a blacksmiths shop behind me here. But once again there is very little left of it today.





The trail went on forever!



I ended up back at the small lake but on the other side this time!


It was fun!
