Rotterdam, the Netherlands - 5th May 2009
By: dandilion
On May 2nd 2009 I, dandilion was with Marjolein and Blackcat at the Postcrossing meeting in The Hague, when I came home I found something yellowish in my bag.. it turned out to be Persefone!!!
I think Persofone decide he wanted to come back with me to Rotterdam then instead of waiting to be found.
So yesterday after work I took some bridge pictures with Persefone.
Willems brug (Willems bridge)
The Willemsbrug is a bridge next to the Erasmusbrug in the centre of Rotterdam, spanning the Nieuwe Maas.
It links the northern part of the city with the Noordereiland and (in combination with the Koninginnebrug) the district of Feijenoord. Together with the already mentioned Erasmusbridge and the Maastunnel the Willemsbrug provides an excellent connection between the two city parts.
The bridge was completed in 1981, designed by C. Veerling and named after King Willem III of the Netherlands. It replaced an older bridge which had been opened in 1878 but was severely outdated by the time the decision was made to build a new one. Because of the intensity of the traffic using the old bridge it was decided to build the new one 150 metres upstream to avoid upsetting the daily flow of traffic across the river. After the completion of the new bridge the old one was demolished.
The Willemsbrug is a cable-stayed bridge with a total span of about 318 meters. It is painted in a red color which puts it in sharp contrast with the light blue painted Erasmusbrug.
The Erasmusbrug (Erasmus Bridge) is a cable stayed bridge across the Nieuwe Maas river, linking the northern and southern halves of the city of Rotterdam.
The Erasmusbrug was designed by Ben van Berkel and completed in 1996. The 808 metre long bridge has a 139 metre-high asymmetrical pylon, earning the bridge its nickname of "The Swan".
The southern span of the bridge has a 89 metre long bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge. The bascule bridge is the largest and heaviest in West Europe and has the largest panel of its type in the world.
The bridge was officially opened by Queen Beatrix on September 6, 1996, having cost 165 million Dutch guilders (about 75 million euros) to construct. Shortly after the bridge opened to traffic in October 1996, it was discovered the bridge would swing under particularly strong wind conditions. To reduce the trembling, stronger shock dampers were installed.
The bridge featured in the 1998 Jackie Chan film Who Am I?. In 2005 several planes flew underneath the bridge as part of the "Red Bull Air Race".
In 2005, the bridge served as the backdrop for a performance by DJ Tiësto titled "Tiësto @ The Bridge, Rotterdam". The performance featured fire fighting ships spraying jets of water into the air in front of the bridge, a fireworks barge launching fireworks beside the bridge, and multi coloured spot/search lights attached to the bridge itself.
I really enjoy to cycle with dandilion on her bike.
I am sure we are going to cycle and explore a lot more together,
bye Marjolein
lots of groetjes uit Rotterdam from your Persefone
