Class Room, South Africa - 30th June 2009
By: MrsC
It has been a busy few days back at school.
Today I saw some of the children's favourite snacks.
Well, the Tinkies are American styled, but everything else is local.
South African children really like dried fruit and a dried spicy sausage called 'wors' which you pronounce 'vorrrrrs', and dried, salted meat which is called 'biltong'. It would also seem that they are quite fond of crisps. They call them chips.
Can you see how colourful the South African flag is?
You will have to take my word for it that the biltong and wors tastes a WHOLE LOT better than it looks!
What else have we got here? A chicken pie, sandwiches, rice cakes, fresh fruit, dried fruit, flavoured milk, cheese dippers and ... an elephant? Oh silly me! That's not lunch! That is the class elephant.

Time to get down to some serious work. Today we are using dictionaries to look for definitions of words.

Class room, South Africa - 9th July 2009

When Mrs C went to school, children where seperated and the white children went to one school and the black children went to another school and they were not allowed to mix. Those were very sad days. Now, I am happy to say, that is no longer the case and these children can't even believe that that ever happened.
Today we are learning about animal classifications. We have a lot of writing to do and we use pencils. Did you see that their pencil cases are in my favourite colours?
Phew, these children are so clever, they can do really hard sums. I love doing maths too!

In this school, there is a system called 'Reading Buddies'.
Each Grade 3 pupil is paired up with a Grade 0 pupil for the year and once a week they read them a story. This makes reading fun for the older children and the little ones.
They sit outside on the grass to make it less formal. In summer they sit in the shade of the trees. But, it is winter at the moment, so they all find a warm spot!
Back in the class we are learning about the former president Nelson Mandela. Have you ever heard of him? I think you might have, he is a very famous man.
