Hi out there!

Great News – I will go on holidays! This time without RikeH and Dicker Kumpel – I am a little nervous. But I am Murph the Brave!!!

First I said Good-Bye to Dicker Kumpel. He told me the great News – that I will go to Olgamaus, but I will come back before Christmas. So it is a real holiday – with coming back home to RikeH. I am so glad.

Then I got a big hug by the Others.

Because the weather is so great, Katja wants to show us around in the afternoon.

Remscheid, Germany - 14th October 2009

By: olgamaus

Hello Mummy,
in the afternoon we visited Katja's aunt who is also living in the city centre, about 30 minutes to walk from my current home. The sun was shining, so we went afoot.

I am living in this pretty house at the moment. Our apartment is in the attic storey with a nice view.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3510/4011788559_511389a7fa.jpg

Close to my home you can find the local court. It's the large building in the background.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2537/4012555738_0ba9c4aabf.jpg

We than walked along the "Trasse des Werkzeugs" (Route of Tools) which is a lane for pedestrians and cyclists. It was built on a closed railway track. This route is about 5 km long, starting at the central station and going to a district called "Hasten". You can walk through the city here without getting into contact with traffic very often. Katja really likes  this route.

This route was sponsored by local tool procuding companies. Remscheid is famous for its tool producing and metalworking industry.  Along the route you can find some artworks and interesting historical sites. We started here, close to the former slaughterhouse. This building complex is under monumental protection, containing offices, service companies and crafts enterprises.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3504/4012556658_02f7c1edfc.jpg

Here is a piece of artwork: A bench which was built of the axis of a waterwheel and railway sleepers.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2577/4011805025_b50538f549.jpg

Someone painted my favourite colour to a bridge!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3161/4012555980_f97d956d54.jpg

This is a nice place for a rest.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3501/4011804743_5f32979f14.jpg

I found some signs showing the logos of sponsoring companies here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3486/4011787871_60cee277b1.jpg

Some houses were built really close to the railway track.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2667/4012555824_4e4ddc3700.jpg

I climbed through the green stuff which is growing on  this old wall.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3481/4012556348_3968896780.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2591/4012557074_00a5657eea.jpg

We are close to the central station now. Here you have lots of large factory buildings.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3507/4011787397_29a75c4260.jpg

No doubt that the central station is near!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2641/4011788195_dd3eb1a08e.jpg

In the background you can see the recently re-opened central station. A new one was built here for more than two years.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2665/4012557158_9b84110a9e.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3499/4011788295_7b6292f32d.jpg

The place on the next picture is also part of the new built central station area.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2644/4011787483_d47f5903f3.jpg

We had a coffe with Katja's aunt and talked for an hour. Than it was time to walk back home, enjoying the nice weather.

Remscheid, Germany - 15th October 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
Barney and I were still sitting in Katja's bag, so we took some photos in our lunch break. First I'll show you the city hall. Katja's workplace is close to the city hall, we just had to cross the street.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2506/4014169896_0d909cbb57.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2591/4014170018_3cd4d792e8.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2494/4014170082_ff8f3bbc15.jpg

On the space in front of the city hall the farmer's market is taking place twice a week. There is a pillar on it, showing a lion, the heraldic animal of Remscheid.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2425/4013404099_378ecf7c8c.jpg

Close to the city hall is this water tower. The drinking water for the inhabitants of the city centre is pumped from a dam in a valley into this tower.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2620/4013404293_118695cec8.jpg

The city hall again ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2467/4014170314_505d87977f.jpg

Here you can see a new extensionof the shopping mall.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3273/4013404487_13b15f7330.jpg

We walked home than, making a detour because the weather was so great.

Leichlingen, Germany - 18th October 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

we took a long walk today along the so called "Obstweg Leichlingen".  Leichlingen is a small town, halfway between Remscheid and Cologne.. This path is following a route through traditional orchard meadows, along homesteads and through rural hamlets. It is about 9 km long.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2543/4021971173_933b1abd6b.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2651/4022739664_ed699ca3bd.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2695/4021980127_801abd692f.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2543/4022739936_c64bcce1a9.jpg

What a nice overlook!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2627/4022740710_81658119f6.jpg

We rested next to those pretty toadstools for a while. Katja warned us not to taste them - it's fly agaric, it's extremely poisonous.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2588/4021982835_4d5542d9e5.jpg

We walked along picturesque farms and houses.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2587/4021981193_0e5b1ef110.jpg

Do you know sea-buckthorn? I tasted those berries - Ugh! They are sickening sour.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2485/4022740392_6231a6403d.jpg

Here are apple trees.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2431/4022740572_f97795d923.jpg

Here you can see a typical resident of rural landscapes.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3421/4021979611_b340c9684a.jpg

People here are working with such funny machines. It rather looks like something coming from outer space.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3522/4022728808_3b2fb98bd4.jpg

Fantastic weather!!!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2554/4022739564_d6b06c8b20.jpg

Mummy, something happened ... I just kicked against the post of this sign and than .... Katja said that I'd watch too many Schwarzenegger-movies.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2680/4021979731_d118a7f6b3.jpg

Corn was harvested here.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2545/4021974039_4a1d470486.jpg

I promise I will never kick against a sign again.

Solingen, Schloss Burg, Germany - 25th October 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today to a medieval castle. Medieval - what does that mean? In space we don't know this word.

We parked the car close to the River Wupper.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2679/4043153286_aae06f8368_o.jpg

From here you have to choose: Walking uphill to visit the castle or taking the chair lift? What a question to ask! Of course I want to take the chair lift. Aliens prefer using vehicles, not their feet.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2575/4043153428_17e8ac9c58_o.jpg

Unfortunately Katja did not cooperate.Okay, we walked to the castle, of course through the forrest.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2502/4042409475_d746a98fa1_o.jpg

An outlook pavilion! That means a little rest.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2618/4043153828_c3a644e54a_o.jpg

Nice overview, I must admit.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2537/4043153956_2b7e1f6c84_o.jpg

I can see the car down there!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2443/4042409921_dbb47c3599_o.jpg

The ceiling of the pavilion is decorated with the city arms of the surrounding towns, so here is also the city arms of Remscheid.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2627/4042410043_cc5ca921b1_o.jpg

We reached the castle than.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2522/4042410217_350c319954_o.jpg

In the castle courtyard you can find souvenir shops and shops whose owners are doing an "old" handcraft. For example someone makes soap, another makes brushes, then you can buy things that were used by knights for the kids, like swords and helmets.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2672/4042418305_cb84883fdc_o.jpg

One of the shop owners is selling blue companions.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2701/4042410561_12d04521af_o.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2739/4042410697_4549fb8776_o.jpg

Schloss Burg was built in 1133 by Count Adolf I von Berg on a hill above the river Wupper. That's why this region is called "Bergisches Land". Many people believe that it's name refers to the landscape with hills and valleys. (For those who do not speak German: The German word for mountain or hill is "Berg", so many people think that the name "Bergisches Land" means "land with many hills" )

About a hundred years later it was enlarged by Count Engelberg II von Berg. This is the guy on the horse in the courtyard.

In Thirty Years War (17th century) many parts of the castle were destroyed. It was rebuilt then, but it was used for industrial purposes for many years. In the end of the 19th century they began to rebuild it as it appears today.

This is the former chief of this pretty estate.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2512/4042411561_8b8ee4d400_o.jpg

This is the powder tower.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2524/4043155984_8c036d6273_o.jpg

Again the chair lift - again I was not allowed to take a ride with it.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2743/4042417881_5f5c83dbdb_o.jpg

Some artwork ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2442/4042417413_cd4efb71ab_o.jpg

One more nice place for a rest.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2799/4042418129_25f831fa2a_o.jpg

Ice-cream would be a great idea ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2505/4042411873_a94af8c3b9_o.jpg

We left the castle than ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2600/4042418463_8ac1f8771b_o.jpg

... and walked back to the car, but not beeline. No, again we walked along meadows with large furry animals ... and farms ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2707/4042412063_2b6f74ca62_o.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3490/4042418761_bcf6dc7fc9_o.jpg

... and through another forrest.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2636/4043156902_955b3126a2_o.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2563/4042412413_0f8db828a8_o.jpg

They even have a school in the forrest, a "Waldschule".

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3516/4043162986_41198461ec_o.jpg

Those blossoms feel like they were made of wax.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2497/4043163252_2f025903cc_o.jpg

Okay, pretty landscape.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2656/4043157104_62f0851d91_o.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2458/4043163420_c4fbfc9155_o.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2546/4042413131_58fe6d5d55_o.jpg

In the background you can see the castle, situated on this hill.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2683/4043163562_fa59ca15b7_o.jpg

Lucy K. told me to enjoy the view of all those pretty old houses, but I had only eyes for the car which was parked on the other bank of the river.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2677/4042417285_a046887282_o.jpg

Next to the car I saw an information board with a map of the vicinity.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2723/4042408903_1b32da2d35_o.jpg

(Shush! This was a nice trip, although I had to walk for hours once more).

Hi Mummy,

today we took a walk with Katja's friend Kerstin and her family dog, Pepe. We went to Wuppertal, Scharpenacken, which is a former army training area. This area was used for military purposes until 2004 A.D as a shooting range. Today there is a local recreation area with vast open areas.

Remscheid, Germany - 3rd November 2009

Hi Mummy,
I visited Katja's sister today. She told me that she'd have some furry blue friens which I'd probably like. And yes, indeed, lots of blue friends! First we took a look at the garden. First I had to work  :)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2688/4126114160_0569eea4b2_o.jpg

Do you know what this flagg is showing?

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2713/4126114370_c262f85d49_o.jpg

Than I already met a blue friend.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2678/4125345837_3d78b87dc0_o.jpg

More blue friends!!!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2790/4126114558_b57ac86a77_o.jpg

I found an interesting thing to cilimb on ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2736/4126114628_f776775772_o.jpg

I had a great overview from the top of this funny thing ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2792/4125346353_02483a0a5a_o.jpg

Nobody helped me to get down, so I had to climb headfirst ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2511/4125346435_80b0843b2c_o.jpg

Another friend, goggle eyed like me.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2731/4126115010_a5b10389f2_o.jpg

Katja's brother-in-law went to the gym than, unfortunately he refused to take me with him. He said that I'd probably destroy something there ... He heard about the road sign in Leichlingen ... maybe he won't recognize me ...

Hi Mummy,

today we are helping Katja to build a cage. She is going to have two funny furry animals which are going to live in a closet.

I forgot what animals they are ... something with a "F" .... they are playful and sort of wild, Katja said. Whatever, I was allowed to work.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2554/4080785741_db7257c737_o.jpg

I had to use  a jigsaw and a the drilling machine. I had to cut large holes into the doors of the closet. Later wire will be fixed with staples.

That's great - lots of noise and lots of dirt - wonderful!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2447/4081547254_cd2b06a9ee_o.jpg

Of course I also helped to cut the wire to the right size. I had to take care of those sharp ends.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2694/4080785667_7cddb4a3f8_o.jpg

Tomorrow we will have to grind the wire , so it won't be sharp any more. Thand we will fix it to the doors and side parts of the closet.

Wuppertal, Germany - 20th November 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
In the afternoon Katja met her friend Erika and we started today's trip to Wuppertal, one of the neighbour cities.

We took the bus to Wuppertal and started walking on the "Sambatrasse", a closed railway track. In this region you can find a lot of those so called "Bahntrassen". They are liked by pedestrians and as well by cyclists. Usually you can walk or ride through a town without much contact to traffic and street noise. This route here is about 9 km long.

We walked along abandoned train stations and allotment gardens.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2568/4119764921_7d061e71c1_o.jpg

It seems that someone found souvenirs along the railway track ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2741/4119765053_8e10e3a4cd_o.jpg

We saw large stacks of wood, protected against burglary or maybe aliens.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2759/4119765201_65172bdd24_o.jpg

Risk of accident?! I never thought that taking a walk should be dangerous.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2689/4119765119_90149ebc17_o.jpg

Most leafs are already fallen.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2759/4120539206_a7c00b0d10_o.jpg

Suddenly we heard a lot of noise from cars. The route is leading along a motorway feeder.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2522/4119765403_08c5d97ca7_o.jpg

When the path went along a residental area I read some informations about a villa.

A part of the Sambatrasse is crossing the Wuppertal Zoo. A bridge is build over the zoo, on the right side you can see the tiger enclosure. We even saw two tiger playing.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2612/4120539440_99c41d3869_o.jpg

The tiger were so far away that we had to zoom.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2613/4121210759_957862e318_o.jpg

We saw this funny sign on the bridge, just behind the tiger closure. It says

Info for the tigers - Meals on wheels.

Cyclists have to take care ...  :D (Maybe not only cyclists).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2706/4120539496_19d4bdf8a4_o.jpg

We reached the end of the Sambatrasse here.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2554/4120544094_3412c11f7e_o.jpg

Katja and Erika decided to enjoy a pizza before going home. That's what they always do when they walked along the Sambatrasse *gg*

Here you can see the one and only "Schwebebahn", a suspended monorail, travelling above the surface of the river Wupper. They have really strange  transportation means here on earth.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2605/4120538690_321f0c2203_o.jpg

We went home by Schwebebahn and bus.

Remscheid, Muengsten Bridge, Germany - 22nd November 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

we took a walk today to visit Germany's highest railway bridge. It is Muengsten Bridge, connecting Remscheid and the neighbour city Solingen.

Here is river Wupper which is marking the border between Remscheid and Solingen.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2528/4124675927_1f4460e297_o.jpg

Can you see the outlook pavilion in the background? We will go there later.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2653/4124676033_221cd484df_o.jpg

We had planned to go to the bridge at first because later the sun would have disappeared from the valley. For some sad cause it was not possible to go there. So we had to walk another path. Here we saw some engraved rocks, this one is an oracle, a puddle-oracle (Pfützenorakel).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2713/4125444566_337e54392b_o.jpg

The slopes of this valley are really steep, with lots of rock.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2728/4124676305_6daa7132ee_o.jpg

We reached the outlook pavilion soon.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2521/4124676449_499963db69_o.jpg

From here you have a fantastic overview across the valley of the river Wupper.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2545/4124676579_34cccf942a_o.jpg

Our path is leading underneath Muengsten Bridge, not on the bottom of the valley but in the height of the middle third of the valley.

Muengsten Bridge is made of steel. It is 107 m high and spans the valley of river Wupper. The bridge is 465 m long and was completed in 1897.

This forrest region is a nature protection area.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2510/4125445436_bcd350ffc1_o.jpg

We saw a cafe in the forrest.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2651/4124677465_e6cc29b82e_o.jpg

We are in the municipal area of Solingen now, in Solingen-Unterburg. Unterburg is a picturesque old district.
