Nieuweschans, The Netherlands - 21st December 2008

By: Marjolein

Hi!

I visited a Celtic MidWinter Festival! It's called Yule in Celtic.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF6835.jpg

They had lots of meat like Spare Ribs ooooh!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF6839.jpg

There where guys playing bagpipes.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF6850.jpg

And you could also buy clothes, mostly Celtic and Gothic.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF6851.jpg

The Dutch band Rapalje had a show. They sing Celtic music in English, Irish and even Dutch. Even the Dutch dialect from Groningen called Groningen. It was really cool!

I can't wait untill the MidSummer Festival!

Gilbert was fan of the penguins, but they wouldn't look at him! How sad!

Marjolein is planning a trip to another zoo in The Netherlands in January! Maybe I will see some real ladybugs there!

Groningen, The Netherlands - 27th December 2008

By: Marjolein

Goodday!

Today we had a cultural day; we went to the Museum of Groningen. They had an exibition of paintings from J. W. Waterhouse. He was a painter who lived in the end of the 19th and the begin of the 20th century. The exibition was called Enchanted by Women. And we where allowed to take photo's inside the museum, check it out!

This painting is called The Lady of Shallott. She is a woman from the legend of King Arthur. Waterhouse mostly painted women from legend and mythic stories. And Marjolein loves that kind of stories, so we didn't get out of the Museum soon haha.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF7016.jpg

This painting is also called The Lady of Shallott. This is Waterhouse is most famous painting and it has hung in the Tate Gallery in London for over a century but it made a trip to Groningen, that's so special!

I really liked this painting. It's called Miranda and was painted in 1916. It's painted after the story The Tempest from Shakespeare.

Borger, The Netherlands - 30th December 2008

By: Marjolein

More Celts today! We went to the Hunebedden Center in Borger today. A hunebed is a grave made by prehistoric people from really big stones. You can't find them in the Dutch province Drenthe. And that's where we where. They have the largest hunebed in the world here.

Hunebedden have nothing to do with Celts, but we went here because they have a Celtic exibition, with all the Celtic treasors ever found in Europe (with exeption of Great Britain because they kept the treasors for themselves).

This is what a hunebed looks like when you dig it up.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF7059.jpg

And it looks like this on the inside.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF7062.jpg

These are some examples of the treasors found in The Netherlands.

These are jewellery, called torques. They Celts wore them around there neck.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF7083.jpg

This is a little rooster made from emaille and sacrefished to the Goddes Arcanua.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF7117.jpg

They also had a wishing tree.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF7133.jpg

And Gilbert dressed up as a Celt, he looks so funny!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF7082.jpg

I can show you a photo of Sunnie with the largest hunebed.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c162/marjoleinaneth/DSCF7134.jpg

A photo of me with the hunebed!

AliG has arrived at my home. I'm so glad that he arrived savely here.

I want to thank everybody who hosted him during his journey.

AliG brought a really funny postcard, translating "AliG-Language" into real English and Spanish. It's very funny :D
