Vienna, Austria - 10th September 2007

By: ChristinaB

After a booooring weekend in my envelope I arrived in Vienna today. My host family was very excited when they released me from my envelope and I had a warm welcome from 3 little boys and 2 other toyvoyagers: Béstik and Archibald. I was told that we'll start sightseeing soon, but today it's raining so we'll rather stay at home.

Vienna, Austria - 13th September 2007

It finally stopped raining so my host decided that it was time for some sightseeing. Bestik, Eireannach and I were really excited when we went to the city center and saw all the beautiful buildings in real which we only knew from pictures so far.

Our first stop was at the City Hall. Our host told us that we were there a bit too early because in about 2 month the big Christmas market would take place at the big square in front of the City Hall. Well, at that time I'll properbly be somewhere else already...

Just opposite the City Hall there is the Old imperial theatre. You are only a really good Austrian actor if you at least played there one time it is said. well, for me it would defenitely be enough to watch a play there... wuff!

Then we went on to the Parliament and continued to the Museum of historical arts. Have a look which funny ball-shaped trees they have in the little park there! The museum has a twin just vis-ŕ-vis, the museum for historical nature which looks exactly the same.

Vienna, Austria - 13th September 2007

After a little break we continued our walk. We went through the gate "Heldentor" and reached Hofburg then. Hofburg was the former residence of the Habsburg family and it nowadays hosts the national library, some museums and the president's office.

Then we went to the absolute centre of Vienna where we found many typical Viennese cafés. Unfortunately we were a bit in a hurry so we didn't have time to sit inside and try all the different kinds of coffee Vienna is famous for, but we had a look in the window of a café and found a very beautiful Lipizzaner horse completely made from sugar there!!! Can you imagine? The real Lipizzaner horses are not in Vienna at the moment, they always spend summer in Styria I was told, but now they have this sugar horse here! How funny!

We went on to St. Stephen's Cathedral where a looong queue was waiting to get inside. It's a quite popular place at the moment I was told because the pope Benedetto XVI visited Vienna last weekend and held a mess in the cathedral.

Well, we finished our city walk at the opera. Our host invited us to come back to Vienna in February because then the famous opera ball will take place there. Do you think I'll be able to learn how to dance until then??

Salzkammergut, Austria - 1st October 2007

By: ChristinaB

After all this sight-seeing in Vienna our host decided that we TV should also see some other beautiful places of Austria, so she put us into the car and drove to her parents with Eireannach, Tanusha, Daisy and me.

They live in Upper Austria in an area called Salzkammergut and indeed, it was very beautiful there!

On Saturday evening we drove up a little mountain from where we had a very nice view to lake Traunsee and all the other mountains around.

We also visited a very special castle there. It's called "Schloss Orth" and it consists of 2 parts: a "normal" castle and a "water castle" situated on a small island in the lake. Unfortunately we went there in the evening and it was already a bit dark, so the photos didn't come out so well :(

On Sunday we went to an other lake, Attersee. Unfortunately at the end of September it's already too cold here in Austria to have a swim in the lake but i was told that my host family spent a wonderful summer holiday there.

There happened something really exciting during my stay in Upper Austria. We saw a balloon landing close to the house of my host's parents! We already watched it a while before coming closer and closer and then it really came down. Especially for my host's kids it was really really exciting, but I must admit, I was fascinated, too. Never ever in my whole doggie-life I saw such a huge balloon soooo close before!!

Have a look how Austrians try to educate their dogs!!! There are these strange dog-imitations everywhere in the whole city and they say "Take a bag for your "A-a"!" but in German it's a sort of rhyme so people consider it to be funny... Well, personally, I didn't laugh about it sooo much...

Last weekend on Saturday there was a perfect autumn day so my hosts decided to go to the woods with us and search for some mushrooms. It lasted only a short while until we found the first one. Poisonous! It was the same with the next one... but then!!! Finally we found a really delicious mushroom and Tanusha and I were sooo proud of ourselves.

Vienna, Austria - 13th October 2007

We went a bit more sightseeing in Vienna today. Unfortunately the weather was rainy so we only had a short walk in the park of Schönbrunn castle. I was very impressed by the castle and all the fountains and statues he found in the park. The guards were friendly enough to let me walk there a bit, too, because usually dogs mustn't enter the park I was told. I'm sure that's because Austrian dogs are still on training concerning the thing with their "A-a"!

We had a look from Gloriette (which is the point of view in the park situated on a hill) down to the city - the view was amazing! ;)

I also saw these "Fiaker" in front of the castle which I already saw in the city centre before. I like these horses with their carbage alot and it was funny to see them wearing a rain-coat today!!!

Since the weather became worse while we were walking through the park of Schönbrunn castle my host decided to show me Vienna's technical museum. What a good idea!

How impressive for a little doggie! I was very interested to see all these engines, satellites, aeroplanes and other technical stuff there. I even was allowed to push some buttons and do some little experiments.
