Vienna, Austria - 11th October 2013
By: Jasper
Servus, Grüezi and Hello,
after a long sleep and a good breakfast we started in the second Day. The Naschmarkt on the program. The weather did not look promising, but that could not stop us.
The Naschmarkt is Vienna's most popular market. Located at the Wienzeile over the Wien River it is about 1,5 kilometers long.
The Naschmarkt has existed since the 16th century when mainly milk bottles were sold (As Milk Bottles were made out of Ash (Wood from an Ash-Tree), "Asch"(German for "Ash")led to the name "Aschenmarkt"). From 1793 onwards, all fruits and vegetables brought to Vienna with carts had to be sold here, while goods arriving on the Danube were sold elsewhere. Nowadays, you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables from around the world, exotic herbs, cheese, baked goods such as bread, kaiser rolls, and torte, meats, and seafood. There are also a lot of small restaurants which offer e.g. sushi, kebab, seafood, traditional Viennese food such as Kaiserschmarrn or Palatschinken (compares to rolled up crepes) and stalls which offer clothes and accessories.
We strolled through the market and admired the offer.
The traders are very friendly. Everywhere you can taste the goods.
Once the market run up and down and you are full.
Of course, we enjoyed a glass of wine.
Then came the big rain and everyone was looking for a dry place.
After dinner (no pictures, it was just too full) we were on our way home.
We walked past to the Hotel Sacher,
took a look in the Kärntner Strasse (the famous shopping street)
and saw the brightly lit Opera House.
A day with many impressions came to an end.
bye

Vienna, Austria - 13th October 2013
By: Jasper
Servus and hello,
this day started on the banks of the Danube Canal.
Through countless small streets we came initially to Jewish quarter with its beautiful houses,
the Lessing monument
and the memorial to the Jews who were murdered during World War II in Austria.
We went on and came to the Parliament.
The next building we saw was the Town Hall on the Ringstrasse.
Built between 1872 - 1883 it has 1575 rooms , 2035 windows and 5 towers . The tallest tower measures 103 meters - with Rathausmann . Emperor Franz Josef I decreed that any new tower should not be higher than the tower of the Votive Church , which was 99 meters high. The architect designed a 98 meter high tower and put the Rathausmann on it to make it appear higher.
Directly opposite the town hall is the famous Burgtheater.
These are the towers of the Votive Church.
We walked back past the Burgtheater,
- I saw some more Fiaker horses -
to the Volksgarten (People's Garden).
Between thousands of rose bushes , we took a short break.
Then we went to the Hofburg (Imperial Palace).
The various tracts that make up the Imperial Palace , were built between 13 and 19 - 20 Century. In the entire history the Imperial Palace was home to some of the most powerful people in Europe. Currently, the castle serves as the official residence of the Austrian president.
In addition, it is home to numerous museums, the Spanish Riding School and a convention center.
On Heldenplatz outside the Hofburg.
One of the many internal courtyard with a monument. I do not remember to whom.
The monument to Empress Maria Theresia.
Museum of Art History. The Natural History Museum is directly opposite.
The Spanish Riding School.
Unfortunately, there were no tickets. :-( (
But I had a bit of luck.
Mommy & Daddy - I saw real Lipizzaner horses. In this machine, they make her walk during the stall is cleaned.
This is the St. Michael's Wing of the Hofburg.
At St. Michael's Square.
Here we stand on the terrace in front of the Albertina and look at the Sacher Hotel (from behind).
The Albertina houses one of the largest and most important collections of - 50,000 paintings and 900'000 artistic works ranging from the late Gothic period to the present.
Albertina Place
Then we reached the Stephansplatz. First we saw the Haas Haus,
and then St. Stephen's Cathedral.
The cathedral has been restored several times, rebuilt and expanded.
The massive south tower is 136 meters high and the construction took 65 years.
The construction of the North Tower was stopped because of the Gothic architectural style went out of fashion.
The roof is covered with 230,000 colored tiles and really spectacular.
Because our hooves, paws and claws ached slowly, host dad decided to go Fiaker.
A lady drove us with the carriage through Vienna.
We saw many beautiful houses.
Take pics was a little difficult. It bounced heavily on the cobbles.
This is the Peter Church.
A big thank to our Horses. They made a good job.
Then we took the subway to the modern part of Vienna - Danube City. Near the site of the International Garden Show (1964 ) - today Danube Park with the landmark of the area, the Danube Tower - Uno City was built.
Also the tallest building in Austria - the DC Tower
(250 meter roof height) - and many banks ,
insurance companies and the Vienna International Center you can find.
The Danube Tower (252 meters with antenna) we had to visit .
There is a cafe and restaurant that rotates .
From the observation deck we had a magnificent view over Vienna.
Kaisermuehlen with the old Danube.
And then the new Danube , the Danube and the Danube Canal .
Much Danube.
At the end of the day we drove to Grinzing wine taverns .
The dinner we had earned it honestly .
After a few glasses of wine we saw everything a little blurry -
Jasper also .
It was an exhausting but wonderful day .
See you soon
Hanne
P.S. A little nightcap on the way home.
Reminds me of Cuba.

Bern, Switzerland - 24th November 2013
By: Jasper
Hi all,
Today we visited the capital of Switzerland - Bern. The weather was not on our side but we did not care.
Bern was first mentioned in documents in 1208. To date, the city has retained its old world charm. So we strolled through the streets,
admiring the old buildings
and arcades.
Many beautiful fountains adorn the cityscape.
This is the Käfigturm (Prison Tower).
The House of Parliament.
Today there were no guides - it was voting Sunday.
This is the view from the terrace on the Federal Palace in a district on the river Aare.
The National Bank.
On the Federal Court,
where I stands now, a large, traditional market will be held tomorrow - the Zibelemärit (onion market). All shops are closed, the students do not have school. A really big thing. Around 50 tons of onions, most braided into elaborate braids or wreaths are made available for sale. And at 16.00 clock, there is then a wild confetti battle.
Too bad we can not take part.
The old casino.
A bear as an art object.
The bear is an important part of the city. I do not know why but in the arms of the city a bear is shown and Jasper told us that on the banks of the Aare live bears.
November mood.
Another object of art. It stood in the middle of the street.
A famous building in the city of Bern -
the Zyytgloggeturm. ( Clock Tower )
We saw festively decorated shop windows,
churches,
the town hall
and small and charming neighborhoods.
Then we came to a small road whose paving stones were all marked with a name.
Jasper told us why: A few years ago, when the bear pit was converted for animal welfare reasons, cost a lot of money. They came up with the idea to sell stones. Anyone who bought a stone or donated money for the reconstruction was immortalized by name. The road is long and the Bernese Bears have now a large park on the banks of the Aare.
We had to look long before we discovered it .
In the old bear pit you can learn about the lives of animals now.
This is the Berner Munster.
From the cathedral terrace you have a beautiful view of the old town and the Aare.
This is the city theater.
A chocolate manufactory. Unfortunately on Sunday the store was closed.
On the way to the station we saw the Hotel Schweizerhof.
Now it was time to think on the way home. We had 2 1/2 hour train ride ahead of us.
Something wet we warmed in Jasper scarf.
For a short time we looked out the window but then we overcame fatigue.
I hope you like my trip to Bern.
Hugs and kisses
Hanne
