Karawaci, Banten, Indonesia - 21st July 2012
By: aelissa
Hi! Guess what, I just arrived in Indonesia, yayy!!
My host, Anna, is excited to have me in her home. She and her mum thinks I'm cute Well I hope I don't look too bad after that long journey.
Anna is doing a research on breastfeeding. Just look at all the materials she's reading! I like to know more about that, but statistics puzzle me a lot! I think I'd rather play on her laptop instead...
Tomorrow Anna will start taking me around the city. I am SO looking forward to it!! Good night!

Karawaci, Banten, Indonesia - 26th July 2012

Today after Anna's lecture, we went to the mall for a little refreshing session. There's not many open spaces in the city, and the outside is almost always hot anyways, so indoor spaces are more popular for meetups and passing time. I couldn't agree more. I can't have enough of air conditioning here!
Anna introduced me to one of her favourite eating parlours: Sour Sally frozen yogurt. Anna told me that fro-yo is very hip among Indonesians, especially the urban youngsters. That's because fro-yo tastes so good, looks so cute, and is very healthy. Umm... and it's served cold, so that's a big plus for me
Lookie, I had a big cup for myself! I had a twisted plain-blueberry yogurt with 4 toppings: lychee, almonds, grapes, and slices of peach. Yum!

Grand Indonesia Mall, Jakarta, Indonesia - 5th August 2012
By: aelissa
Hiiii, mommy!
I am soooo sorry that I haven't written you for awhile. My host have been rather busy with her exams and some housework, but no worries, she never forgets to take me to interesting places.
The Indepence Day of Indonesia (17th of August) is just around the corner, so everywhere we see flags and traditional costumes and festivities to bring people into the mood. This evening Anna took me to one of the bigger malls in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. This mall is Grand Indonesia, or GI. It's a HUGE place, with two buildings across each other connected by a bridge.
When we came, the mall was holding some interesting events. We watched a bit of a Javanese dance telling the classic Hindu epic of Ramayana. Then we walked around to find "kerak telor", a unique food made of remnants ("kerak") of cooked rice mixed with eggs ("telur/telor"). I had one. Oh the taste was super-rich!. I also had a big big ice cream in bread for dessert.
We went around and took some nice pictures. Enjoy!

Bogor, Indonesia - 18th August 2012

Other than the Independence Day, the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr is also coming. Because the Islamic calendar uses lunar calculation, the Eid and other celebrations never fall on the exact same day in several years.
Anna and her family do not celebrate the Eid, but of course we get to eat the food because hey food is everybody! I took a picture with some ketupat. A ketupat is rice packed on a diamond-shaped packet made of latticed palm leaves. Ketupat is not really Islamic culture; it's more Malay/Indonesian culture. Anna told me that if someday I go to the Middle East, I won't find any ketupat there!
