Rüdersdorf bei Berlin, Germany - 13th April 2013

By: Sammy

Dear Mommy,

my travel through Germany goes on.
I arrived safely after travelling through various stations of German postal service.

In order to celebrate my arrival my new host Sammy took me out to a special place. In fact the place isn't so very special, but it has a special meaning for my host. She got born and raised in the city, in which I'm staying with her. The city is called Rüdersdorf.

Mommy, first of all I'll tell you a little bit, which she told me about this place...

Rüdersdorf is located approximately 30 kilometeres east from the town center of Germany's capital Berlin. Rüdersdorf belongs to the federal state of Brandenburg. (There are 16 different federal states here in Germany.)

The population of Rüdersdorf as counted at the end of 2011 is a little over 15.000 people. So this place isn't as big a huge city like Berlin.
Rüdersdorf is quite a green place with lots of nature. In most areas of Rüdersdorf you can see lots of trees or bushes. This place also is more quiet than Berlin.
So why do I know about the comparison of Berlin and Rüdersdorf? My host wants to take my to Berlin, so she told me a little bit about the differences.

Rüdersdorf is famous for its limestone-open-pit mining. Notable buildings of Berlin were built by using limestone from Rüdersdorf. An example for this is the Brandenburg Gate.
Nowadays some parts of the mine I just told you about are used as a museum.

The place my host took me to in order to celebrate my arrival is a church. It's been built from 1869 – 1873, so it’s very old. The architectural style a neo gothic one and it’s following a blueprint of Friedrich August Stüler. He was a famous Prussian architect and builder, who lived from 1800 – 1865. So when this church was built he wasn’t alive anymore.

If you’re coming from places like Berlin and you want to go to the house of my host, you often have to pass this church. For my host it became something like a symbol of her hometown. Whenever she sees this church, she feels like she’s coming back home. Because of this, she took me there, even if it was evening already and the church has been closed, so she only could show it to me from the outside. It was a gesture of telling me that I’m very welcome at my host’s home. She wanted to show me a connection between her and her hometown.

I hope that you will enjoy the first images I’m posting for you from Rüdersdorf, Mommy!

Bad Saarow, Germany - 16th April 2013

By: Sammy

Hello from Germany!

Mommy, I don't want to shock you, but I'm in hospital.....
Oh, ok.... I better stop to make you worry.
I'm here to visit a member of my host's family. I'm doing fine. My health couldn't be any better. Please forgive me the little joke!  ;)

My host took me to Bad Saarow. Bad Saarow is located in the state of Brandenburg. It's a spa town and well known for its thermal spring.

I got here by car and experienced how it feels to ride on a part of the German Autobahn system. Tochi and MeeDean joined us, so I wasn't the only ToyVoyager travelling here.

We visited the father of my host in the big hospital here in Bad Saarow. Sammy and I thought it would be nice to show you pictures of how a hospital can look like on the inside here in Germany.

We took pictures in a single bed hospital room. There are single rooms, rooms for two or three people here in Germany. Somtimes there are more people, who have to share a room. It depends on the capacity of the hospital.
There also are little bath rooms attached to some rooms. However one also finds hospitals in which you have to share the bath rooms with the other patients, who are staying on the same floor.

The pictures I'm showing today are taken at the Helios Hospital in a single bed room with a single bathroom.

There's a superstition here in Germany, which is saying, that the one who sits down on a hospital bed during a visit will be the next person to end up in hospital. But my host Sammy told me it would be fine to sit down on the bed anyway, because it is a supersitious belief and experience proved her that it doesn't have to become true.

The bed actually was very comfortable. There also has been a TV screen on which patients can watch TV while resting in their room. My friends and I also found a board game: chess. It belonged to the hospital and was placed in the room to give the patients the possibility to use it and have some fun while getting back to health.

MeeDean, Tochi and I had fun when we found the IV stand. We were climbing it and did little stunts. Sammy watched us and made sure we wouldn't fall.

To strengthen up I received a cup of hot chocolate. Patients and visitors can get hot drinks in vedning machines at this hospital. They have to pay a bit of money and in return they can get coffee, tea, a hot suop or hot chocolate. It tasted really good but it was also very hot. I had to wait and let it cool down a little, before I could drink it. Maybe the hospital tried to get more patients by making people burn their tongues....  ;)

On our way back we stopped at the big station in Bad Saarow. We didn't see any train, but Sammy wanted to give me the chance to show the building to you.
There were little restaurants close by.

I hope you're well, Mommy!  :)
