Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain - 24th February 2016

By: olgamaus

Hi Mum,
we travelled to Tenerife yesterday. Tenerife is one of the Canary Islands, the largest one of seven islands. Tenerife is a rugged and volcanic island sculpted by successive eruptions throughout its history. The island is about 300 km from the African coast, and approximately 1,000 km  from the Spanish mainland.

We stayed in Puerto de la Cruz, a vivid city in the North-West of Tenerife. You can find lots of large hotel complexes here, but also a lovely old town with typical narrow streets and plazas.

Our hotel is situated at Playa de Martiánez, with a fantastic view across the beach and towards Orotava valley. Can you see the yellow spot? It is marking our balcony. Today we started a long walking trip in the Orotava valley.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1642/24806106064_1881a8d036_z.jpg

First we had to walk uphill to leave the city area. The coasts of Tenerife are typically rugged and steep here in the North of the island, so you cannot just walk along the beaches.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1529/25436686585_07197b87a3_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1592/24809988103_f31d4a05b4_z.jpg

Agriculture is centred on the northern slopes, tomatoes and bananas are cultivated, usually in plastic enclosures. In Orotava valley you can walk though banana plantations for hours.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1457/24806108564_a7a421bc16_z.jpg

There are overlook points everywhere, official ones are called "Mirador". The view across the coastline is always a spectecular one.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1523/25410536906_d445f82637_z.jpg

The North and South of Tenerife similarly have different climatic characteristics. While the South is mostly sunny, you have more rain in the North, due to the topography of the island. Today the weather was changing constantly, sunny on the last picture and a bit later the sky was full of clouds.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1581/25410538266_c6573b0e17_z.jpg

Our walking route took us high above the valley.

Later in the evening we took a walk in the city of Puerto de la Cruz.

Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain - 25th February 2016

By: olgamaus

Hi Mum,

today we visited the Botanical Garden in Puerto de la Cruz.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1629/25318349222_0515a67f0c_z.jpg

We saw the most insteresting plants here, like this fig tree for example. The figs are growing directly from the trunk.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1605/25343758631_08483707f5_z.jpg

This beautiful flower is called Bird of Paradise.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1665/25343759411_8cdc6005fe_z.jpg

These trees are like a forest full of airial roots.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1516/25141117510_61f2d7c57b_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1442/24806132154_e8729c575f_z.jpg

Tenerife is well known for its dragon trees. This is one of them. They can become hundreds of years old.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1692/24805960144_43aa13bc3d_z.jpg

These are banana plants.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1515/25410561226_fe4261d6f0_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1560/25069120349_fda58fb760_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1492/25436717695_50e3c02591_z.jpg

This tree is covered by lichen-

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1637/24810020643_cc0b00441f_z.jpg

Later we walked to another park in the city.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1640/24809848543_8c415726c2_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1582/25069124849_d797144930_z.jpg

Again we had to walk steep uphill to get there.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1570/25069125879_a2e082a6fd_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1584/25343596961_2ce22b9485_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1552/24809853743_ef05905900_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1505/24806144344_70c8bd1c58_z.jpg

Our next destination was Playa Jardin, one of the few sandy beaches.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1464/25636387232_87126ecf6d_z.jpg

All the sand is black due to its volcanic origin. It is looking fantastic!

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1522/25629790042_e3323df608_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1581/25636389532_b8d23fe685_z.jpg

Around Playa Jardin a park with palm trees and cactus is created.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1638/25724723836_f01d49a895_z.jpg

Tomorrow a hiking tour in the mountains is planned.

Aguamansa, Spain - 26th February 2016

By: olgamaus

Hi Mum,

today's trip started in Aguamansa, in the mountains above Orotava Valley.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1653/25141131770_5e8a9f1256_z.jpg

We walked through lovely pine forests.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1652/25343776121_76af0a3071_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1616/25069133829_2e63d30e17_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1641/25069134539_2dd491b8bb_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1687/25410577076_daa2069434_z.jpg

Here we also found trees which were covered by lichen.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1456/25318372472_42e9804fe2_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1656/24806153054_38df551d76_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1675/25141140660_779e8c816c_z.jpg

This seems to be a kind of elderberry. Can you see that there are fruits and blooms at the same time?

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1468/25318377232_7e62c8b5d1_z.jpg

And here ....

a wonderful look at Pico del Teide, covered with snow.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1559/25410585106_c2330bb265_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1694/25141144470_c0d779b9c6_z.jpg

The higher we climbed, the more fantastic the landscape became. Look at these lava formation.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1706/25410587136_d3438368f4_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1695/25436740975_9b68ed7eea_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1664/25436743615_0740992b3b_z.jpg

We were at a level of about 1.500 m than, the vegetation changing.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1641/25343791321_433a67c05e_z.jpg

Eukalyptus trees were growing there.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1461/25069150909_0cf2103034_z.jpg

I almost felt like home in the Swiss mountains  :D, even snow wasn't missing.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1487/25410594036_0060c20a6a_z.jpg

Above the clouds the weather was much better, of course.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1632/25318388732_1908cb603e_z.jpg

AFter returning home to Puerto de la Cruz we were really tired.

Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain - 28th February 2016

By: olgamaus

Hi Mum,

today we made a hiking tour along the coastline, towards the Western parts of Puerto de la Cruz, about 8 km towards Los Realejos and back.

Once more we walked through the lovely old town.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1456/25343797781_8dc894618f_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1538/25140980990_fd2eb8039a_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1653/25343798891_d451ce2d94_z.jpg

Close to the coast we found this lovely outlook pavilion.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1519/24810050893_c98a511f70_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1662/25318392752_6e544f8c39_z.jpg

We walked along the shore, with this fantastic view towards Playa Jardin and Punta Brava, another historical district of Puerto de la Cruz.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1642/25436752715_c9ef1cbbe5_z.jpg

Over the years a large field with cairns (human-made piles of stones) was created by people.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1631/24806172584_3a940c9535_z.jpg

These cairns are mostly used as trail markers.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1667/25318395802_4339cbe918_z.jpg

Later ...

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1680/25069162369_a15e5b13d8_z.jpg

In the meantime we left Puerto de la Cruz behind, following the trail.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1565/25436757825_f8e9c13907_z.jpg

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1471/25318400532_97cea69585_z.jpg

The coastline became more and more cliffy.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1693/25343810851_d5317aaa0b_z.jpg

The decayed house was a water pumping station once, built in early 20th century.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1576/25436762735_ec3fa11a56_z.jpg

Duck your head  :p

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1563/24806187424_f9b814eb83_z.jpg

From here we walked back.

This time we made a side trip to the narrow lanes of Punta Brava.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1677/25343818291_215dbbdeca_z.jpg

The breakers are nearly crashing into the houses.

Garachico, Tenerife, Spain - 29th February 2016

By: olgamaus

Hi Mum,

today we went to Garachico, also located at the North-Western coast of Tenerife. Garachico is an old town which was almost completely destroyed by an eruption in May 1706. Most of the town and the whole harbor were destroyed. There is no beach but natural rock bassins, remnants of the lava which came down the valley in 1706.

Hi Mum,

today we met Strunki and went to Cologne to meet another TV-host from Germany, fam-united.

We had planned to visit the Botanical Garden ("Flora") here. It was created in late 19th century.

Duesseldorf, Germany - 6th March 2016

By: olgamaus

It was a 30 km trip by car to get to Duesseldorf. The car was parked in the old town.

Duesseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is situated on the River Rhine, and is renowned for its many events and also for its fashion and trade fairs. We decided to visit the old townd and of course to have a look at river Rhine.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1650/25653788771_3358c083e6_z.jpg

This is Burgplatz, a central place in the old town, opening towards the river.

Duesseldorf's old town is called "The world's longest bar" because of its hundreds of bars, pubs and restaurants. Here you can see the bar of one of the most famous breweries of the city - Uerige.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1592/25653791641_4c4e719557_z.jpg

In Duesseldorf a special beer is brewed - Altbier, a delicious darker beer.

The interior of the bar is really rustic.
