East Helsinki, Finland - 21st October 2007
By: Delenna
Long time no see (nor sea)!
My host had this charity organization's event to attend (she's a member and promised to help out) and she took me with her (and Hinz&Kunz). It was held in eastern part of Helsinki (the capitol). They had a buffet, sold things, musical show, fairytale with music, ctafts - and the local police visited! We got only a pic of the police car. It was very interesting, the event!
The other pic is taken on the way back home. The sun was setting already at 5 pm. My host wanted to take a pic of the small harbour in the sunset light. This being the first part of the "water tour" she said... What on earth (or sea) did she mean?

There was a "grand opening of Christmas" here in Porvoo! We saw a presentation of firemen divers (that hot monekey girl next to me is Tanusha, a new TV visiting my hostfamily), a parade with firemen walking with torches, Santa's helpers and most importantly Santa Claus! Also the Christmas lights were turned on in the downtown area and in the Market Square were performances of the animal farm and Porvoo Theatre (singing etc.). It was cool to see all that!

My host took her two eldest daughters to an Elf workshop at Taidetehdas (Art Factory, third pic)! There Christmas surprises were made at different areas of a craft workshop that utilised recycled materials. I helped the girls of course For example: We stamped on old newspaper to make gift wrapping paper, then we made puzzles and lastly decorations to be put on the christmas tree. It was much fun! And the girls learned that fun things can be made, not only bought from the store (well, I think they knew that already).

As it snowed the girls were eager to go out and build a house of snow... Yes, there wasn't enough to do so (as their mother tried to explain) so they went to try sliding the hillock. Wet grass slides ok I tried it too, with Tanusha and little Poochie (a Postcrossing traveller visiting us). It was fun!
My host wishes for more snow, for her daughters' sake

More snow!
And a play for children. It was called something like "Viiru's christmas plans". Viiru is the (quite hyperactive) cat and he did all sorts of funny stuff! He's a character of a Swedish chilren's book "Viiru & Pesonen" (Pesonen being the old man owning him).
Here, a few pics of the cartoon/comic/book illustration. They are called Findus & Pettson in Swedish.

My host and her kids made gingerbread cookies - and I of course helped out! The kids enjoy most of all the decorating part. In the pics we're making a gingerbread crown. Traditionally people make a house but my host said she got fed up after doing one - and that was about 10 years ago! After that she's made different building every year. Except for 2006 and 2005 when she made a Moomin house. She found out by herself a way to make a tall, round house and was very pleased with it. This year they made this crown because last xmas my host got a book with all sorts of examples of gingerbread cookies - she decided to start with this simple one as it was easy to divide the task between the girls.

Christmas!
In Finland they celebrate it on Christmas Eve. The feast wasn't a traditional one - we ate burritos! Every family member enjoys this unlike the traditional foods. The tradtional version would include ham, potato casserole, carrot casserole and Swedish turnip casserole, fish, this stuff... etc.
The only traditional foods they had were rice porridge in the morning and plum pastries for dessert (plus the gingerbread cookies of course). But it was good!
I helped the kids decorate the tree and while we were outdoors had Santa dropped the gifts to the balcony! With a letter! I got a gift too! It was an orange woollen scarf to keep me warm in the windy weather
In addition to all this we went to the sauna (it's also a tradition on Christmas although these people go there at least weekly anyway) and watched tv. My host's favorite is the Jimminy Cricket christmas show (the cartoon)!

We were invited to a christening - me, Tanusha and Poochie (a Postcrossing voyager). My host's friend had her second daughter and that little baby girl was christened. My host was asked to take the photos and she gladly did. Here is only a few, but the rest were with people.

My host's daughters (well, two of them) held a birthday party for grandparents and godparents (and a few selected toyvoyagers ). The youngest one turned 2 and she had that Winnie the Pooh cake. The eldest one turned 6 and had that Barbie cake. They were supposed to have regular round ones with whipped cream and some decorations, but my host doesn't like "regular" so she went and googled for ideas - simple ideas she said... The Barbie cake didn't look simple! I of course know the secret of it...
Everyone had cookies and drinks (juice and/or coffee). It was a small scale party but the house was full and the girls got many presents. It was a fun day!

It has been a not-quite-snowy winter here, just like the few past years ("Nothing like in the good old days when I was young" my host said "Then there was snow. From November to Marc at least"). That's why my host wanted to take a pic of me when it snowed and wind blew hard. It was nice to look at when you were indoors My host wondered if it really is true that schools close in the States when it snows - it's nothing like that here, every place is open and buses travel etc.
My host and her family are moving, not too far away, but anyway. So there might not be updates for a little while. She says we'll be safe and won't get lost - and that we'll take new pics soon, by the sea!

My host and her family moved closer to the sea (within the same municipality). It's not open sea view as Finland has such an amount of archipelago. But I enjoyed it anyway. I should probably think of becoming a lifeguard - I look so good with the lifesaver thingie there - and I'm a duck so there's the obvious advantage (I swim like a --- duck!)...
I got to try driving a boat too!
PS. See me wearing my new woollen scarf
The last photo is here to show you guys the amazing sunrise!
