Remscheid, at home, Germany - 28th September 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
MiniMarshmallow invited us to a marshmallow lunch. We had marshmallow-banana-shashlik with chocolate :)

First the chocolate was melted.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8457/8035048902_87b778e7a1_o.jpg

Than Katja's daughter showed us how to roast marshmallows over a flame.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8451/8035050931_6fc1842966_o.jpg

The shashlik was already looking good ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8176/8035051021_857c07ec7c_o.jpg

... but even much better with a a chocolate topping!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8319/8035049536_9fd5c1a19f_o.jpg

Enjoy!

Remscheid, Germany - 30th September 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we are having lovely weather today - a good opportunity to take a walk in the surroundings of Remscheid.

There is a lot of green around, several outskirts are hidden there.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8310/8042846412_0f77f14c4c_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8322/8042850330_3483852265_o.jpg

Turkeys, chicken ... this is paradise for a fox!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8030/8042846664_2149f0fe65_o.jpg

Sheep are also tasting good, although they are a bit too large for me :)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8314/8042836759_12305a4d37_o.jpg

WE found the remains of a villa hidden in the forest. The house is no longere there, but those stairs.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8459/8042831033_9d36527066_o.jpg

We walked through a rural area than.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8310/8042847538_90c15121d0_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8037/8042847798_b604377948_o.jpg

We enjoyed the sunshine :)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8171/8042831503_048f416e56_o.jpg

Back in the valley we found some old mill ponds.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8032/8042837549_99f715a037_o.jpg

This is the creek the valley was named after - Morsbach.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8319/8042838009_61681aecc1_o.jpg

From here we had to walk uphill for some time to get back home. Why does my host  has to live on top of this damned hill?

By the way, I did not meet any magpies this week, who knows where Mrs. Magpie is hiding?

Bye
Ferdi Fuchs

Remscheid, Muengsten Bridge, Germany - 19th October 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
the weather has gone crazy - we are having sunshine and about 20°C. This was a good reason to make an excursioin to one of the touristic highlights of this reason. Because my host does not have a car, we took a long walk through lovely rural areas and forests to get there. Katja's son accompanied us.

We walked to a distrcit in the West of Remscheid and reached this lovely point soon.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8044/8103329253_f7dbe7636e_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8334/8103342838_bf56170146_o.jpg

I saw a cat sneaking towards a bird ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8330/8103342934_ec3572c4f3_o.jpg

Oh no! A magpie!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8047/8103329559_6c575c1cc2_o.jpg

I called to it "Hey, magpie, fly away, there is a cat behind you! And tell Mrs. Magpie that I am sill searching for her!"

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8045/8103329645_1a70ebe5e1_o.jpg

We went into the forest than. Oh, what a lovely view, all those golden leafes!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8330/8103329761_0fff2ae2df_o.jpg

We rested on a bench for a moment.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8047/8103351334_997420dbf2_o.jpg

This is an extremely large beech - Katja loves this tree.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8468/8103343306_b0ca4a3956_o.jpg

This tree is showing several route markings. The encircled "R" means Roentgenweg. It is following the border of the municipal area of Remscheid, about 62 km long. It is named after the founder of the X-rays who was born in Lennep, one of the historic districts of Remscheid.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8196/8103343416_7daf55d279_o.jpg

We simply had to follow our path downhill to the bottom of the valley.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8187/8103330027_a3e6b56de8_o.jpg

River Wupper is flowing in the valley.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8463/8103343600_b8e501563b_o.jpg

I saw a cute little outlook pavilion at the opposite side of the valley.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8192/8103343704_05cb334fe2_o.jpg

Katja told me that you had a spectacular view to our destination from there. We were visiting Muengsten Bridge, Germany's highest railway bridge. It is connecting Remscheid and the neighbour city Solingen, overspanning the valley of the river Wupper.

Here it came into sight.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8471/8103343804_0945ac04d3_o.jpg

The bridge was built of steel in late 19th century, it is 465 m long and 107 m high. You can find more information here, in German.

The bridge is so wide that it is nearly impossible to take a proper photo of the whole bridge. Of course our host knows the location where she could take a halfway proper picture. On our way there we had a look at the leisure park which was built under the bridge some years ago. You can find large lawns with benches for relaxing, playgrounds for the kids, a crazy golf course and riddles. We preferred sitting on a bench, enjoying the lovely surrondings and the sunshine.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8327/8103338745_d1bebbb8b2_o.jpg

This is river Wupper.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8195/8103330467_2dcba30e93_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8191/8103343990_f312401a64_o.jpg

Isn't it looking fantastic?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8046/8103344112_443894de23_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8333/8103344220_296ea1156b_o.jpg

We had to walk back home than, uphill for more than an hour!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8328/8103344330_4c8917d3ef_o.jpg

We came along a stadium, construction works were taking place there.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8043/8103344448_fe38e273b6_o.jpg

Can you see the church tower in the background of the photo?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8466/8103331117_73628ef327_o.jpg

This is where I am living at the moment, another five minutes walk from this church. I will fall into my bed in the evening, my little feet are already hurting .

Wuppertal, Germany - 20th October 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
the forest was calling again! This time we took a walk in the outlying districts of the neighbour city Wuppertal. We started our trip in a nearby valley.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8049/8107986210_2cb48bd44c_o.jpg

Katja told us that this path was leading towards a small dam.

There were several fish ponds along the way.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8467/8107986290_3ce62a656e_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8045/8107986364_974bbdb4c5_o.jpg

Soon we reached the dam (Ronsdorfer Talsperre), a really small one.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8332/8107976861_15b9741718_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8464/8107976923_3cecf7fe58_o.jpg

There are information boards along the path, you can learn a lot about wildlife in the forest. Have a look at this board, displaying soil animals.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8193/8107986592_4e111a1ed5_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8470/8107977053_4b1425d816_o.jpg

We reached another rural district with horses on the meadows.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8327/8107977131_6de1dcc941_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8048/8107977205_7d5055fe3d_o.jpg

Another fish pond while we walked back.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8472/8107986890_2e9e984e94_o.jpg

The weather forecast for tomorrow is also promising :)

Remscheid, Germany - 24th October 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we met my host's daughter in the city centre. She wanted to buy shoes and later take a walk with us. After buying shoes we walked towards the station.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8043/8121864231_7c53edf776_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8056/8121880780_f4cafb46ff_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8327/8121864673_1c701a8402_o.jpg

We walked towards a valley, leaving all those industrial complexes behind. Deep in the valley we found older dwellings and allotment gardens.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8190/8121864963_546374450e_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8467/8121881620_d7be1995f9_o.jpg

I met this hard-working spider.

Back in the city ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8333/8121883534_9a6d0f2b22_o.jpg

Katja told me that we'd had to pack my things because I would leave the next day. She told me that I will travel halfway around the world!

Hi Mummy,
today it was time to say good-bye to Remscheid. Katja showed me where I will go next.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8472/8121829959_baaf44235d_o.jpg

She also  told me that it would be very warm there, not like autumn here :)

We wrote a postcard for my next host and packed a tiny fridge magnet into my envelope. Now I am on my way to Asia!

Bajra Sandhi -Bali, Indonesia - 1st December 2012

By: Linda Fdph

Hello Mom,

Here iam now..., at Bajra Sandhi Monument
Bajra Sandhi Monument or usually known as Puputan Fight Monument is a monument established to honor the soldiers in Puputan war. This monument is a symbol of Balinese people fight and dissemination of the spirit preservation from generation to generation

The architecture of the monument is very unique, taking the shape of Bajra or Genta, a bell that used by Hindu Priests during religious ceremonies

Every statue and each carving in the monument compound has its own meaning. The whole of the monument symbolizes Mount Mandara where, according to the epic Mahabarath, the Gods had a battle with giants fighting for the Water of Eternity.

Le Mayeur Museum-Bali, Indonesia - 11th December 2012

By: Linda Fdph

Hello....Mum

Here iam in one of Museum in Bali, called Le Mayeur Museum. Museum Le Mayeur can be found straight on the beach between Jalan Hang Tuah and Inna Grand Bali Beach hotel, one of the largest hotels in Sanur.
The museum used to be the former house of the Belgium painter Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres who arrived in Bali in the 1930’s.

First he settled in the little village of Klandis, east of Denpasar where he met the famous legong dancer and local beauty, Ni Polok, when she was 15 years old.

She agreed to model for his paintings and lots of the paintings you see today in Museum Le Mayeur feature Ni Polok.

The house is set in a garden with beautiful frangipani flowers, Balinese statues and palm trees.

Sanglah-Bali, Indonesia - 26th January 2013

By: Linda Fdph

Dear Mum

Today, Balinese people celebrate "Tumpak Landep"
It was an occasion where not only the people, but also the vehicles get dressed and ornated with janur - the young coco leaf - in the form of canang ( small offering), tamiang ( shield) and all sort in any colors and delicate crafting. That's when the Balinese people is having the Tumpak Landep ceremony to honor Sang Hyang Pasupati, the Lord of all metal implements. The blessing ceremony is given to heirlooms, weapons and other metal tools (including car, motorcycle etc ) and prayer is held for magical power and proper function, ensuring a trouble-free period for the next seven months. Even offices and shops have this ceremony to bless their vehicles, tools and merchandise.
