Travelog for: Ewan E. Ewok

Porvoo, Finland - 15th January 2009

By: Delenna

Hello there.

I'm Ewan E. Ewok, a young ewok (we live very very long). I love forests and would like to see local forests everywhere. I'm quite shy but if see something disturbing the beauty and peace of nature I go nuts. Just that you're warned...

My favorite food is cones (the same kind squirrels eat) and honey. But I eat very little as I'm quite small, so you don't have to worry. And I'm quite capable of "hunting" my own food.

I love being outdoors but I prefer a warm and cozy bed.

I can't wait to start my journey around the world!

PS. the E in the middle of my name means Einstein as my parents thought I was very clever already as a baby  ;)

Remscheid, Germany - 7th May 2009

By: olgamaus

Hello, Mummy,
I arrived today in Remscheid at my new host's house. The journey wasn't boring at all because Roo came with me. We had a lot of fun in our envelope.

My new host Katja came home from work in her lunch break. Because she had to buy some things she took Roo, lion Desmond and me with her.

First she showed us the city hall. This building was originally built in 1906 but was almost completely destroyed in World War II, later rebuilt in a more modern style. The tower is 48 m high.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3353/3510147949_8c9f51550d.jpg?v=0

We went along the shopping street than. This is the main entrance of the shopping mall.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3401/3510148805_9f93671526.jpg?v=0

We saw a funny fountain.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3557/3510149215_bc25814136.jpg?v=0

We went to the central train station which is built completely new at the moment. Last week they opened a new shopping mall here. This is the view from the train station to the city centre.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3415/3510959810_48d47fbe98.jpg?v=0

When we've boght everything we went back to the city centre. This is a ring road.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3336/3510149955_d95e61a1da.jpg?v=0

I was poking around in the planting of the walls.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3332/3510150179_6cfaae3987.jpg?v=0

It is leading to the bus terminal.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3307/3510960560_900b419e01.jpg?v=0

On our way to Katja's workplace we came along the city hall once more.

This is the market place in front of the city hall with the shopping mall.

We had to go to work than :D

Remscheid, municipal park, Germany - 7th May 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
after work we took a walk in the municipal park. Finally I saw a little bit of nature here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3326/3510961540_aedcf1610a.jpg?v=0

This is a pond in the park. Ducks and turtles are living here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3545/3510151847_107cd48933.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3340/3510962728_a500d26e70.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3648/3510962942_f5dfc0bc97.jpg?v=0

From  here you can see the district Hasten and the outskirts of both Remscheid and Wuppertal, the neighbour city. I see lots of forrests, but they seem to be a bit apart from here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3627/3510963160_096975b922.jpg?v=0

Now I'm hungry, I'll see if I can get some honey.

Bye
Ewan

Hi Mummy,
today we helped Katja to write postcards. She wrote at least eight postcards to postcrossing members. She still has a letter to write.

Hi Mummy,

a new ToyVoyager arrived today, it's Nijntje from the Netherlands, a cute white bunny.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3557/3516327274_8d6b9cddae.jpg?v=0

today we took a walk in the forrest. First we had to walk to a district called "Hasten", one of the oldest dictricts of the city.

Here you can already see that the city is surrounded by valleys and forrests.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3577/3515516469_12ff9d4150.jpg?v=0

Can you see what's growing here? It's hazel.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3620/3515517809_c662990f38.jpg?v=0

We left than. Gui stayed at Erika's home, cuddling the cat.

We walked through a rural district.

The city centre of Remscheid is situated on a hill. You can see it in the background, with the two towers, one of them is the one of the city hall, the other one is a water tower, close to the city hall.

We are living on that hill, we walked the whole way.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3575/3516330290_b8eeba9a0f.jpg?v=0

We reached a forrest than, although it was only a small one.

Katja and Erika decided to have a drink in a restaurant, it's called "Sunshine Ranch".

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3315/3515522921_4694b4cc4a.jpg?v=0

First they ordered a beer.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3611/3516333818_8c685a434e.jpg?v=0

Suddenly they realized that they were hungry, too. Of course we also were hungry. So they ordered some snacks.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3629/3516333948_90c04f2192.jpg?v=0

When we went home I was feeling a little bit tired, but I couldn't resist to sit in the soft moss.

Wuppertal, Germany - 10th May 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we visited Wuppertal.

Wuppertal is the neighbour city of Remscheid, famous for the worldwide one and only Monorail Suspension Railway (Schwebebahn). The suspension railway travels along a route about 13 kilometres long, about 12 metres above the surface of the river Wupper and approximately 8 m above the city streets. At one point the railway even crosses the A46 motorway. The entire trip takes about 30 minutes. One of the stations is "Zoo/Stadion". Here we entered the Schwebebahn.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3589/3519646866_8b54cd9aa2.jpg?v=0

We wanted to visit the botanical garden, situated high on the steep slope of the valley. For pedestrians you can find many long stairs leading uphill, like this one:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3585/3518835983_f4e063236a.jpg?v=0

In this part of the town which is called "Hardt" you can find many pretty old villas.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3590/3519649628_005119d637.jpg?v=0

We reached the botanical garden than. In the background you can see Elisenturm, an outlook tower which is 21 m high. The botanical garden was founded in 1890 as a school garden.

On the left side you can see a greenhouse, than the Elisenturm and the entrance area of the garden.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3405/3519650818_8c259c687b.jpg?v=0

First we climbed onto the tower to have an overview. From here you can see the city lying in the valley.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3352/3518841381_d0c11ec920.jpg?v=0

We walked through the garden and saw lots of pretty and interesting plants.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3562/3519659888_661bc5de4d.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3398/3519660282_38480bcdbd.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3639/3519657306_21c76d2983.jpg?v=0

I even visited an exhibition of cones. I saw cones from Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Australia and Asia.

Wow! These ones are much larger than me!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3591/3519655410_50e751b030.jpg?v=0

Here you can see us sitting under a date palm.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3309/3518971001_d9eecc14ab.jpg?v=0

The botanical garden is running together with the park "Hardtanlage". Here you can see many people relaxing in the grass.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3621/3519660468_5a69d4db7e.jpg?v=0

Again an overview across the city, this time from the edge of the park.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3390/3519662558_26ae36ce1d.jpg?v=0

We walked back to the city centre.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3365/3519667158_7307445c8b.jpg?v=0

We walked uphill again and had a great overview once more.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3359/3518854779_cc2530b09a.jpg?v=0

We took a walk through a district with pretty old houses.

We had a great day!

Remscheid, Germany - 14th May 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today two new ompanions arrived, Chance, a monkey and karlheinz, a little teddy bear.

We took a  walk in the afternoon. Katja wanted to show us a bit of the vicinity of our current home.

We went to the Trasse des Werkzeugs  (Route of Tools) than. The Trasse des Werkzeugs is a lane for pedestrians and cyclists which was built on a closed railway track. It was sponsored by local tool producing companies. This lane is about 5 km long and is leading from the central station to the district Hasten. Along the route you can find signs which are showing the logos of the sponsors, also artwork.

The first one of those signs is showing the city arms of Remscheid.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2040/3530853783_d84b4caa35.jpg?v=0

Here you can see that this lane really was a railway track once.

This is a bench made of a gigantic screw clamp.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3343/3530869849_5cc3da554d.jpg?v=0

We reached Hasten than. I saw a kindergarten behind those large trees. Can you see how it is called?

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3144/3531667022_e6dcc140fa.jpg?v=0

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2139/3531667108_36d3199fee.jpg?v=0

You can see this district is situated close to woodland.

This beautiful Patrician villa contains a museum.

at home, in the kitchen - 15th May 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
it's raining today, so we did not go out. Instead we helped Katja to make ice cream.

To make ice cream you need milk, cream, 4 egg yolk, sugar, vanilla sugar, a chocolate bar, chopped walnuts, butter, sugar and a bit of honey to caramelize them.

First you have to heat the milk and melt the chocolate in it. In the meantime you beat egg yolk, sugar and vanilla sugar until it is a thick, almost white foam. Than add the egg foam to the milk and heat it for another two minutes, without cooking. Cool this mixture down and put it into the fridge for about 20 minutes.

Ideally the caramelized walnuts are ready now.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2405/3533461983_217991a9a0.jpg?v=0

Than you take the ice cream maker out of the fridge, fill in the prepared mixture and switch it on.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3206/3534279904_db92355c2a.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3345/3533462383_f344561ff4.jpg?v=0

After 15 minutes stirring you can add the walnuts.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2390/3533462639_06c6d4b1e4.jpg?v=0

When the machine finishes its work, put the ice cream into the fridge for about half an hour. Than you can enjoy it.

Remscheid, Germany - 16th May 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we visited Katja's sister today. We were sitting in the garden. I was more interested in the plants than in cake and coffee.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2049/3538630752_c6c2e36d2d.jpg?v=0

I found rhubarb and strawberry plants.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2022/3538630624_0c6dabd9a7.jpg?v=0

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2353/3538631892_ae411e5652.jpg?v=0

Katja told me that rhubarb and strawberries would probably end in a delicious cake. That seems to be a good idea :D .

Marktredwitz, Germany - 20th May 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

today we went to Marktredwitz with Elke and Wolfgang. Marktredwitz is a municipality in the district of Wunsiedel, in Bavaria. We reached the city after a five hours ride. It was a good felling to cool down our feet in this creek.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3329/3563576529_a898169dd9.jpg?v=0

Really refreshing ...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3414/3564394160_7373d39d8e.jpg?v=0

We spent some time on this playground. From here you can see to Marktredwitz, although the visibility was not so good.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3333/3564394508_7c0b517bcb.jpg?v=0

I had mushrooms for dinner!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/3564394988_2e9ec48038.jpg?v=0

We've had a great view from our hotel room.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3636/3564395636_02503a04ca.jpg?v=0

Although this is only a young eagle,I've got respect for him. I prefer hiding here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3321/3564397694_123a03b24b.jpg?v=0

Attention! This one is going to attack us! Chance turned pale.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3636/3564398028_7f9015816e.jpg?v=0

We'd better go to the old one.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3597/3564398254_602853cac5.jpg?v=0

I rested for a while at the edge of the wood.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2445/3563581459_683ab63877.jpg?v=0

The view to Marktredwitz is not bad here, it's also very cosy here.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2482/3563582177_dc78dfed0a.jpg?v=0

Hopefully this sunshade is big enough.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3560/3563584697_3c6de8720b.jpg?v=0

This area isn't densely populated. It could be very relaxing if we would not have to visit Elke's and Wolfgang's relatieves all the time :D

We spent four days in Bavaria. Our photos were taken on several days. I hope you don't mind that I'm writing just one update.

Remscheid, Muengsten Bridge, Germany - 12th June 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

it was raining the whole week, today the sun came out finally.

So we decided to take a walk to Muengsten Bridge, which is the highest railway bridge of Germany.

To get there we had to walk through the town, than through a forrest and than downhill, also through a forrest.

Here we are still in a housing area, but it is already looking more rural hiere.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3619181277_c050641927.jpg?v=0

I like it here, it's looking great here with horses on pasture land.

Soon we reached the forrest. Here you can find a nature trail with informations about plants, local animals and more. Here is an information plate showing local owls and birds of prey.

In this part of the forrest you have mostly beech groves.

This old beech is so large that we could not take a photo of the whole tree.

We rested for a while on a bench.

Katja told us that Muengsten Bridge is overspanning the valley of river Wupper connecting the citiesof  Remscheid and Solingen. It is 465 m long and 107 m high. It was finished in 1897.

We reached river Wupper first.

In the background you can see a cable ferry. You can cross river Wupper here. To get the ferry to the other side two people have to activate a mechanism similar to a  handcar.

Finally, here you can see me underneath the bridge.

We went home by bus. On our way to our home we saw these pretty old houses.

I arrived in Germany at my new host Sissi. I had a great voyage and arrived well.
I also met Veggies, a rabbit who just comes from the Canary Islands!

Sissi showed us her house and the garden:
