The tradition and the story of the Vasilopitta as my friends told me

One of the most beautiful and inspiring traditions of the Orthodox Christian Church (Greeks are Orthodox Christians) is the observance of Vasilopitta The word Vasilopitta is a compound Greek word which means the sweet bread of St. Basil.
During the fourth century, one of the greatest Fathers of the Christian Church appeared on the spiritual horizon of the Orthodox Faith. His name was Basil and he was Bishop of Caesarea, Cappadocia (Asia Minor) during the fourth century. He was one of the three Cappadocian Fathers of the Church (the others were Gregory of Nazianzus, his best friend and his brother, Gregory of Nyssa.)
St. Basil was the first person in human history to establish an orphanage for little children. He also founded the first Christian hospital in the world. His fame as a Holy Man spread like wildfire throughout the Byzantine world. He was considered one of the wisest and compassionate clergymen in the entire history of the Church. His Feast Day is observed on January 1st , the beginning of the New Year and the Epiphany Season. For the Greeks, he is the saint who brings the gifts during Christmas.
According to tradition, special sweet bread is prepared in every house during New year‘s eve which is called Vasilopitta. Sweets are added to the bread which symbolize the sweetness and joy of life everlasting. It also symbolizes the hope that the New Year will be filled with the sweetness of life, liberty, health and happiness
When the Vasilopitta is prepared, a coin is usually added to the ingredients. When the bread is cut and the observance begins, the individual who receives that portion of the bread which contains the coin is considered lucky. This tradition adds joy to the celebration at the beginning of the New Year, which everyone hopes will bring joy to all. Since St. Basil loved the poor people, a special piece is cut for the unfortunate of the world which symbolizes our concern for the poverty-stricken people of all nations.
The history said that when Saint Basil was a bishop, Barbarians came to his city and asked all the money of the people. The citizens gave them to their bishop and he put them inside the church, waiting the leader of the barbarians to take them, praying. A strong rain came and a thunder killed the leader and most of his soldiers, the remaining ones were running away. So the cold of the city was saved. But nobody knew how much money or gold have given each of the citizens. So Saint Basil divided the money in equal portions and put it in small breads and each citizen took one bread which contained a potion of the treasure.  That’s why Greeks make this sweet bread every year.

The first think I have learnt here was that people love food and drink. When I came Dharma nad her animals gave me the Greece's most traditional drinks Ouzo and Tsikoudia to taste them and "meze". Mese is a wonderful dish which contains small portions of a foods' variety as yellow cheeses, feta cheese, small pies, small salted cookies, tomatoes, olives, sausages, small peppers e.t.c. and they offer it with their drinks.
Ouzo gives you extra power I enjoyed it and I climbed on the bottle...
You can see me also drinking with my new TV friends Tilla and Jumbie...
Cheers! Hiiick... it seems i drunk much lets sleep a bit!!!

I cooked (ok ok I helped Dharma to cook and bake) some more traditional sweets. First Melomacarona (the brown cookies),  kourambiedes (the white ones) and tsoureki (that I'm tasting which is like a long cake). I made with my own feet these you can see in the photo!!! and I'm very proud!
Mom, I wish you could see me when I was preparing them!!!(and when I was eating them too)
Then I jumped on their Christmas tree and I spent the night sleeping in Santa's pocket!!! Do you recognize the face of that Santa? He he he was the most unusual Santa I have ever seen: he has had the face of Michael Jackson!!!

It isn't a Parisian bistro but a nice bistro here in Athens. My host promised me that if she will go in Paris (maybe next month) she will bring me with her there to help me completing my mission! I gave her a big hug when she told it to me! Till then we enjoyed together a nice gourmet dinner drinking a perfect white wine.

This is a traditional meal for the Mardi Grass. Here in Greece the call it Clean Monday because in ancient times wives clean their houses because they want to be prepared for the coming Easter. They eat a spesiffic bread named "lagana" and they ear salads and fish food but not fish. Dharma prepared stuffed mushrooms, a vegetable pie, shrimps, octapus with wine and red sauce, and the traditional salad "taramosalata" which is made from fish eggs. I ate till died!!!

The last photo is from the goodbye party!

Vääksy, Finland - 21st March 2010

By: sirkku-susanna

Hiiiiiiiiii Mom!

I arrived here to Finland and Vääksy last week. It's still winter here. Quite cold and snowing. So we haven't got out yet. But Susanna says we will soon. When I have got used to this weather.

In first picture you can see me with my new friend Mandy, she is TV too. And I brought some candies with me and we share them together. Then we did little bit research in our host Susanna's department. And we found cats and more cats. First this big wooden one and then several glass cats (actually they are wine bottles)  ;). Yes we found one real cat too or he found us. Susanna keeps close eye on us, because Veskari the cat is kind of wild.

I will write you again soon!

Take care mom!
