Heidelberg, Germany - 16th March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

I've safely arrived in Heidelberg. The weather is warm and sunny here, so the other ToyVoyagers took me to the balcony where we enjoyed the sun.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-HsFVDzOFXHg/T2MYSzAOfiI/AAAAAAAALbs/7D9_LTuBuH0/s564/DSCF0372.JPG
The cute little dog next to me is Josie, then there come cat Kit-Kat, rabbit Králi and rhino Tamina. They all come from different German cities and have been staying here for a while. Last not least there's Coco Presley who lives here and just like my host nuriayasmin she's a big Elvis fan. I guess when I come home, I can sing all Elvis songs to you :-).

I also had a look out of the windows and I'm sure it will look really nice here once the trees have started to grow leaves again.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1eOwYPSbb8k/T2MYToQmdDI/AAAAAAAALbw/S74ou6mgyMU/s564/DSCF0373.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KVJ2rEIlLNs/T2MYU1jEJTI/AAAAAAAALb4/aVJN44Xxdog/s600/DSCF0376.JPG

Nuriayasmin has to leave for work soon so I'm going to spend the afternoon with the other TV's.

Keep fine,
Nils

Heidelberg, Germany - 19th March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

Today I visited a bit of Heidelberg. First I took a walk along the river Neckar.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-HNEsey6p9Ws/T2eGBjjbCHI/AAAAAAAALes/yCwJ53ARcd0/s564/DSCF0382.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-bpGGifEBL6o/T2eGEOXyrdI/AAAAAAAALe0/8J3vEUW2I7o/s564/DSCF0383.JPG

I saw these two swans who came quite close.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-H139VR7wuG0/T2eGBMBFpWI/AAAAAAAALek/bnKFbfYE81w/s564/DSCF0387.JPG

There are a couple of ships where you can have a coffee or eat something.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-pr_vhRFk0C8/T2eGFcKkNVI/AAAAAAAALe8/P5ZYw0Z6aIg/s600/DSCF0389.JPG

Behind me are the Old Bridge, the castle and part of the Old Town.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-pRA2iHgUYv0/T2eGGaiQviI/AAAAAAAALfE/TYqBeQ9M6AY/s564/DSCF0391.JPG

Luisenpark Mannheim, Germany - 21st March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

It was a gorgeous day, there were almost no clouds in the sky. So the whole ToyVoyager gang went to Mannheim and invaded the Luisenpark. The Luisenpark origins from the late 19th century and has been continously extended since then. It's obviously one of Germany's biggest and most beautiful parks.

There's a big lake in the middle of the park. In summer you can rent a boat.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-EvgMi2otaiU/T2o2LgHZkSI/AAAAAAAALms/-EjvwdKDR_E/s600/DSCF0425.JPG

The television tower is so high that it can be seen from almost all corners of the park.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-MB3i6TUwR2s/T2o2PTN5PwI/AAAAAAAALpc/U4Kb_CH2RZY/s512/DSCF0431.JPG

I met some ducks.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-UGPEUV5U96g/T2o2PWQYs1I/AAAAAAAALm4/7YXadreJUJ0/s564/DSCF0439.JPG

I also met pelicans:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jVqMCs3qrps/T2o2PMpzdbI/AAAAAAAALm8/VZmPp360G7Q/s564/DSCF0440.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Tnd6jbMFO00/T2o2R7rxJvI/AAAAAAAALnM/bgwALi1c5MU/s564/DSCF0446.JPG

Nuriayasmin wasn't sure whether this was a duck or a goose.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hxs_fFE8dpI/T2o2VAfFNKI/AAAAAAAALnc/T3mOXyKSryI/s564/DSCF0450.JPG

But these are definitively geese:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-XWZ8S9dy3Hw/T2o2WeQi8PI/AAAAAAAALnk/It95BqFkAoc/s564/DSCF0458.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-rdLZwqtDtu0/T2o2YwNesnI/AAAAAAAALn0/UQFFNGEaxX4/s564/DSCF0459.JPG

So that means: I completed my first life mission: Meet a goose!!

There are also some interesting pieces of art at Luisenpark.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-2AkiwZ9Z_NE/T2o2aGoKNbI/AAAAAAAALn8/WsVhBoe6ZnE/s564/DSCF0471.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-W4Vz91J7SJg/T2o2dBCc8EI/AAAAAAAALoM/97xWzccOThY/s600/DSCF0481.JPG

Then we came to the farm where we saw horses, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and rabbits.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-p-JwB7JPP3Q/T2o2dCyvWSI/AAAAAAAALoQ/zMkHujYD9_c/s564/DSCF0489.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Mn4JC-d6Mdo/T2o2g-GlnLI/AAAAAAAALog/DzMy8qhEN0k/s600/DSCF0501.JPG

The Chinese Tea House was built in 2001 and is really beautiful.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BLOX0CuEYfg/T2o2iGiYRSI/AAAAAAAALos/cLqk8ndz-yU/s564/DSCF0514.JPG

These stones build a small cave and there's also a waterfall.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DupCFv7TfZA/T2o2jbRuUeI/AAAAAAAALo4/NBxgnqG_bJU/s564/DSCF0523.JPG

Here I'm inside the cave.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-vfW_xAadrBQ/T2o2ldJCneI/AAAAAAAALpE/qAcvbKesMsE/s600/DSCF0529.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-R34opWsw4Ec/T2o2nR64LCI/AAAAAAAALpM/K02ZuNeQXNM/s564/DSCF0536.JPG

Before we left we posed for a group photo:

Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim, Germany - 24th March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

Today nuriayasmin visited a friend in Handschuhsheim, a suburb of Heidelberg, and we took some photos along the way. Handschuhsheim was first mentioned in the codex of the monastery of Lorsch in 765 but people had already settled there for centuries.

This is the Friedenskirche (Peace Church). It's an evangelical church which was built between 1908 and 1910.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BS2DFKMiucg/T24GuAce6TI/AAAAAAAAL0w/uYkH_OHJNj8/s512/DSCF0552.JPG

The church is situated next to the Tiefburg, a castle from the early Middle Ages which used to be surrounded by water.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-WbvG0fhOvkg/T24GvScMlzI/AAAAAAAAL0Y/5LlRm13k5Ls/s598/DSCF0554.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-KjwC4ekYG58/T24Gwnr44LI/AAAAAAAAL00/PeQiqQmf2tk/s512/DSCF0555.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2PAZSErKHs0/T24Gx11QxBI/AAAAAAAAL0k/PTKUOjCQrCo/s564/DSCF0564.JPG

There are still a lot of old houses in Handschuhsheim and this one looks quite enchanted, doesn't it?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yyKy0-UJlG8/T24GyZyLK6I/AAAAAAAAL0o/jvrXEdMEJ5Y/s600/DSCF0571.JPG

Nuriayasmin's friend lives in a small street like this one.

Heidelberg, Germany - 27th March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

The weather is still warm and sunny, so I took the chance and ate a huge piece of icecream ... yummy.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ujIvMQW159E/T3G8Amk7L6I/AAAAAAAAL74/fq1pc0h-jCI/s564/DSCF0599.JPG

Then it was time to say good-bye to Sylvia. She's starting her first journey today and will travel to Finland.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-t8eSGGv-ZyI/T3G8EE2EjcI/AAAAAAAAL8E/Eo89bPeG-R4/s600/DSCF0591.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HpYmcd40Wnw/T3G8AnpKNUI/AAAAAAAAL70/o1N4aQZ0dHI/s564/DSCF0588.JPG

There won't be time for any outdoor activities in the next couple of days because nuriayasmin has to work nightshifts. Well, I'll just relax and have a good time with the other TV's at home.

Bye,
Nils

Homburg/Saar, Germany - 2nd April 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

Nuriayasmin decided that she needed a break after her night shifts, so we went to Homburg, a city situated in the German state of Saarland. We stayed at the youth hostel which is very modern and looks quite Mediterranean inside.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-whmwmktmjHo/T3yJJqnFa6I/AAAAAAAAMeQ/XT23oVNuDkk/s512/DSCF0719.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fxVGaoDlFic/T3yJKCWTtsI/AAAAAAAAMbI/ARMMxrPa0kc/s600/DSCF0717.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IiPPbLBiTW0/T3yI6PtZZoI/AAAAAAAAMd0/_fSRAal2f3c/s512/DSCF0632.JPG

Nuriayasmin had chosen Homburg because she wanted to see the ruins of the fortress Hohenburg. The fortress was built around 1200 and was destroyed by the French in the early 18th century. While climbing up to it, I had a nice view on the city.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-d6ca-9HJIVo/T3yI6V_GbmI/AAAAAAAAMZs/6PSAsAmV2EE/s564/DSCF0640.JPG

There's a hotel next to the fortress and I was surprised to see this bear sitting there. First I thought he was a wild TV but he was far too big and actually introduced himself as one of the hotel's employees. We had a nice chat.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-04x2Yvxw3lg/T3yI7CFG3YI/AAAAAAAAMd4/odemQTaSdgw/s512/DSCF0643.JPG

Here are the pictures we took while walking around the ruins of the fortress. Hope you like them.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Pmzf0AEF-r8/T3yJGSv5KYI/AAAAAAAAMaw/R_6UabKuWRk/s600/DSCF0709.JPG

And here's something which is even older than the fortress - much older indeed: it's the fossil of a dinosaur.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9fbVtsiHixI/T3yJAljsd_I/AAAAAAAAMaQ/1Ll6Ig1kb2Q/s564/DSCF0685.JPG

After all that historical stuff it was time to play a little, so we went to the park near the youth hostel, had fun on the playground and enjoyed the sight of the lake and the creek.

Heidelberg, Germany - 14th April 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Hi Mum

How are you doing? I'm fine and today I made a nice excursion with our current gang of seven ToyVoyagers.

First we passed a school complex. As it's Saturday, there weren't any pupils, of course.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-UQN2dgAvfCI/T4nZ4eWT8HI/AAAAAAAAM18/1g6Yr2PzE7Y/s600/DSCF1091.JPG

Then we got to the cemetary "Bergfriedhof". It was opened in 1844 and consists of a Christian and a Jewish part. It's quite a big area and we saw only a small part of it.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VtFNYx6PUA0/T4nZ6IVdFqI/AAAAAAAAM3s/7doBCfYvabY/s512/DSCF1105.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-L6QwYnt2uvE/T4nZ5gS2KlI/AAAAAAAAM3w/tKgKuClxtgE/s512/DSCF1106.JPG

Here we're all sitting on the grave of the Jewish author Hilde Domin. She was born in Cologne in 1909 and died in Heidelberg in 2006. In 2004 she became honorary citizen of the town.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-lu53AgzOnRI/T4nZ8qw8rKI/AAAAAAAAM2U/Ots_wZblaK0/s600/DSCF1114.JPG

After leaving the cemetary we spent about three hours walking in the forest.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-RBqEU1cKRKQ/T4nZ-yfE1-I/AAAAAAAAM2c/XZyZD5FJcFE/s600/DSCF1119.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ra31ngHAFjE/T4naCddhktI/AAAAAAAAM34/yAi2jzr5ews/s512/DSCF1141.JPG

We rested on this interesting table.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1eBrkkvDPgU/T4naAcKZe8I/AAAAAAAAM2o/W26IUpjcFJk/s600/DSCF1124.JPG

This totem pole was standing next to the eagle table so we actually felt a little like in the USA.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-aZYcYZXjzWs/T4naArn1_jI/AAAAAAAAM30/m2tXQPjRsCY/s512/DSCF1134.JPG

We were quite tired after all that walking but as we had to go down to the city centre, anyway, to catch a bus back home, we decided to take some photos at the castle which is situated about 80 m above the city in the mountains.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-US0uTx5OymM/T4naFZN-UwI/AAAAAAAAM3A/mLYapNbnuxo/s564/DSCF1149.JPG

This is one of the fountains in the castle's garden:

The view down to the city centre, the Old Bridge and the river Neckar is really stunning.

Heidelberg Castle was built in the early 13th century and destroyed in the 17th and 18th century. Its remains and ruins are nowadays the city's main tourist attraction.

Mannheim, Germany - 26th April 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

I'm sorry you haven't heard from me for a while. I'm fine but nuriayasmin was busy, so we didn't go anywhere.

Well, today we went to Mannheim again and took some photos of the water tower and the Friedrichsplatz with its fountains and flowers. A very beautiful place.

Dear Mum

I spent two days at the UNESCO world heritage site of the Middle Upper Rhine Valley. The weather was marvellous and the landscapes fantastic.
