Magna Science Adventure Centre, England - 27th February 2011

By: miapearl

On our way home, we went via Magna, an industrial science museum set in an old steelworks near Rotherham/Sheffield.
There were 4 zones. The first zone we went to was Water.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1w_-ZXM9I/AAAAAAAADFI/xwkq_VwwDQo/magna1.jpg
A whirlpool exhibit.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1woyTJkmI/AAAAAAAADEM/dc5PUHRzmis/kibbmagna1.jpg
A water wheel.
Next, we went to Fire.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xKbEXPOI/AAAAAAAADFc/cD5hAqYR3Ts/magna6.jpg
This is a fire tornado.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xLAhbxrI/AAAAAAAADFg/jIyqqmSGJAo/magna7.jpg
Lighting isn't that good for photographs with the fire tornado.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xMsIhK0I/AAAAAAAADFo/Zldwwdq7WvM/magna9.jpg
Next stop was Air. This is a musical exhibit with tubes and things.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xN0DmQmI/AAAAAAAADFs/ffeMvOrHioE/magna10.jpg
The exhibit can be quite noisy.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xOgbflFI/AAAAAAAADFw/qToxTQI2vqo/magna11.jpg
We then went for a game of Air hockey.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xPR7BFFI/AAAAAAAADF0/COgpujYJXho/magna12.jpg
The air blows through holes in the table and lifts up the puck ever so slightly.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xQIATL2I/AAAAAAAADF4/-aHVjrziyR0/magna13.jpg
This is a frequency exhibit with little polystyrene balls bouncing.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xQ_aWb8I/AAAAAAAADF8/oXPrw0HPb8c/magna14.jpg
This is a different frequency.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1wphd_I7I/AAAAAAAADEQ/-4R7XgzWXUg/kibbmagna2.jpg
Before going on to the final area, we caught some of the Big Melt show, a reconstruction of how they made steel. This is the arc furnace.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xRr1p-uI/AAAAAAAADGA/eezC5qFLg4Q/magna15.jpg
We went to the final area, Earth. The set up is quarrying "rocks" and these get picked up by the children and taken somewhere by wheelbarrow before going on conveyor belts and distributed either back to the "quarry" or to a chute.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TW1xSpjXo-I/AAAAAAAADGE/zOz8QPCimTQ/magna16.jpg
Can you see the "rocks" on the conveyor belt?

Caernarfon, Wales - 19th March 2011

By: miapearl

Today is another nice sunny day. My mummy decided to take some of us toys out (we drew straws and I won!) to a World Heritage Site - Caernarfon Castle.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxnGw-6sI/AAAAAAAADIk/16_V9G19gS0/ccastm1.jpg
It is quite a long castle.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxnr9lWqI/AAAAAAAADIo/o03IxgfhmQ8/ccastm2.jpg
We climbed up a tower by a spiral staircase. Mummy found it hard to get the lightning right and used her photo editing software to show us better.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxoPQHLrI/AAAAAAAADIs/KoNTigajxvI/ccastm3.jpg
In the background are some of the hills and mountains of Snowdonia.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxoyQ_qFI/AAAAAAAADIw/kPxM9wM8zo4/ccastm4.jpg
The castle is built on the side of the River Seiont.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxpnX-BqI/AAAAAAAADI4/sue8yP3Zofc/ccastm5.jpg
We are rather high up!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxpJk6EqI/AAAAAAAADI0/C2c-biNJI0Y/ccastm6.jpg
It is a long way down, so glad I have a break from being photographed high up with a long drop behind me!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxqfUVwTI/AAAAAAAADI8/dkltpp-ySkU/ccastm7.jpg
we've come to the other side of the castle. That's a dais.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxqzvkOnI/AAAAAAAADJA/Hn32xKPcMso/ccastm8.jpg
This is where Prince Charles received the crown to become the Prince of Wales
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxrXy-ALI/AAAAAAAADJE/HG8ZetjOljs/ccastm9.jpg
Though my mummy wasn't even born in 1969.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxrxwPk3I/AAAAAAAADJI/94a-k9mBjds/ccastm10.jpg
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TYcxsdoBBZI/AAAAAAAADJM/uOBqTD2UM4Y/ccastm11.jpg
Cannons!

Today, Royal Mail issued some nice stamps and my mummy went out and bought some.

Do you like them?

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TZNue3NjCcI/AAAAAAAADLA/ebaXImVUdzM/arrivalsmar1.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TZNufl-LihI/AAAAAAAADLE/61Wp29LkC3c/arrivalsmar2.jpg
The new visitors are Belka and my brother, Rendolph

Home, Wales - 31st March 2011

By: miapearl

Some of the toys are going away on their travels tomorrow, so we thought we'd have a game of Cluedo playing in teams
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TZThuChdjUI/AAAAAAAADMo/IpnzWLq0C_U/IMAG0836.jpg
However, we spent far too much time chatting instead of concentrating on the game and we all drew the 8th clock leaving the crime unsolved.

Gwynedd and Anglesey, Wales - 3rd April 2011

By: miapearl

Today, we went out GeoCaching.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TZm_XYEns3I/AAAAAAAADN0/zyu7r8cnnfI/parcmenai1.jpg
The first two we found are part of a series. This is exciting stuff, looking for the treasure. Which stump/tree is it hiding under?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TZm_X7td_HI/AAAAAAAADN4/7_0FtuYERI0/parcmenai2.jpg
Then, after a nice afternoon cuppa, we found a third.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TZm_Yp3JxnI/AAAAAAAADN8/xTZcMIt5-Bs/cachenearha.jpg
Mummy isn't putting in latitude and longitude co-ordinates for this as these caches we found are scattered around.

Welsh Highland Railway, Wales - 11th April 2011

By: miapearl

Today, we are going on the train.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jbEHQ1cI/AAAAAAAADPI/zYGWbRPzYIo/whr1.jpg
This is first class.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jbu9PQTI/AAAAAAAADPM/9JakG9LGwoY/whr2.jpg
Here, we are at Dinas station. When the Welsh Highland Railway was being rebuilt, Dinas was the HQ. There are work trains and carriages, and engines in need of repair.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jcVkqY-I/AAAAAAAADPQ/Be_qloZq6ds/whr3.jpg
The railway meets the River Gwyrfai several times along its route.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jc03SiII/AAAAAAAADPU/h230vCtJKzo/whr4.jpg
There's quite a bit of water in the river.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jdUv4A6I/AAAAAAAADPY/yjm_-rrDYfw/whr5.jpg
There are fields alongside the railway, this one has horses.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jd-TxCAI/AAAAAAAADPc/XMtPrf-SCDo/whr6.jpg
We are coming into Betws Garmon. Can you see the bell in the church tower?
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jeQvOpjI/AAAAAAAADPg/11mKoe6iDcg/whr7.jpg
It is a long train. Can you see the steam engine at the other end?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jejGGWzI/AAAAAAAADPk/3zOIEpJutDM/whr8.jpg
This is Cwellyn, a reservoir supplying water to parts of north Wales.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jSeQyeYI/AAAAAAAADPA/L04rpJyJJvg/whrkib1.jpg
At Rhyd Ddu, we had a little break and I was allowed out to see the engine.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jf4lm-dI/AAAAAAAADPs/ud2V28RNsh0/whr9.jpg
We had to wait for the train coming in the other direction to stop at Rhyd Ddu before we could continue. The train is also steam-hauled.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jgbIXUlI/AAAAAAAADPw/HUUae3fgDmg/whr10.jpg
They've got a first class carriage, but the one we're in was unveiled by the Queen in 2010 after refurbishment.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jgyusOAI/AAAAAAAADP0/_J_PNkmELds/whr11.jpg
The carriage is called Glaslyn, after another river this railway meets.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jha3HviI/AAAAAAAADP4/hanMedomXoI/whr12.jpg
We are off for the second half of the journey. This section was opened last year, and then not all the way to Porthmadog.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jiP98fpI/AAAAAAAADP8/tFY3VZczrek/whr13.jpg
There's the River Glaslyn.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jktyRQ8I/AAAAAAAADQA/wk2A-uIcVyE/whr14.jpg
Here we are coming into Porthmadog. The river is the Glaslyn here too, the estuary.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jk6VjV3I/AAAAAAAADQE/ApHtqY7VcuI/whr15.jpg
The river is the Glaslyn here too
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Ta1jlTdrmLI/AAAAAAAADQI/z_LIMXVPouQ/whr16.jpg
The Glaslyn estuary. And now, we have arrived in Porthmadog. It is time to run for the bus to take us back home before school closes for the day.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TbnA23xoJwI/AAAAAAAADTU/gbE6fC36DPY/kibbkingdom1a.jpg
Mummy took me on the lazy river ride.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/Tbl3-3TgVqI/AAAAAAAADSA/pzoxHViLkqY/kibbkingdom2.jpg
Big bro went on this rollercoaster.

And Mummy did go on this ride earlier.
