Sanibel, Florida, USA - 22nd August 2016
By: judygreeneyes
Judy and her family go on vacation to Sanibel Island every summer. It is in the Gulf of Mexico near the coast of southwest Florida. It is very small island that has beautiful beaches. Most of the island is a nature preserve. There are alligators on the island, plus turtles, crabs, raccoons, roseate spoonbills (large pink birds), herons, cranes, and pelicans. The beaches are great places to find shells, including many shells that still have their owners living inside (we leave those in the ocean). It was especially interesting see a Florida Fighting Conch, a pretty shell with a sea snail inside that moves by sticking out a big "foot" and pushing hard against the ground. The shells are so pretty!!!

On Sanibel Island we ate breakfast as the Sanibel Cafe. One thing that is very interesting about this cafe is that the tables all have sea shell displays under glass, of shells that are very old and fossilized. Someone has made beautiful designs out of the shells. Each table's design is different.
The waffles and grits are awfully good also. I ate my first bowl of grits!! Grits are a food made from corn that is ground into a coarse meal and then boiled to make a hot cereal. Instead of adding sugar, like people do with oatmeal or cream of wheat, usually salt, pepper, and butter are added to grits. Grits originated in the southern USA. Judy remembers eating them with her dad when she was growing up in Miami, Florida. Grits are also popular mixed with cheddar cheese and eaten for dinner with shrimp.

I met some toy pelicans! There are many Brown Pelicans flying along the water in Sanibel. Judy would like to be a Florida Brown Pelican in her next life

We had dinner at a place called Rosie's. It is famous for lots of fresh seafood like shrimp, clams, grouper, and scallops. The menu is very large, so everyone can find something they like. There are murals all over the walls of the sea life in the Gulf of Mexico.

In Sanibel we spent most of our time at the pool or in the Gulf of Mexico. In one of these pictures I am sitting in a chair by the pool. In the other picture I am in the lanai (the screened balcony of our condo) and you can see the Gulf of Mexico in the background, and you can also see me in front of the condo.
I met a few live Florida Fighting Conchs. They are not so friendly and are always trying to move away by sticking out a big foot to make their shell roll. We only talked for a few minutes before Judy took them back to their home in the warm water of the Gulf.

We went to the Open Air Theater at San Diego State University to a concert of Counting Crows and Rob Thomas (from the band Matchbox Twenty). Judy likes Rob Thomas best. Her husband Steve likes Counting Crows best. Hansi Hu and I just had fun being at an outdoor concert.

I played with Hansi Hu and Kelev out by the swimming pool and also had some fun with Judy's granddaughter Layla. I love her funny hat! We did some painting with water colors without getting too messy

Judy had lots of work to do this week. She teaches Statistics at the local college and was preparing to give an exam to her students. This exam is about probability, like what happens when you toss a coin or roll a die. We helped her write the test questions!

San Diego, CA, USA - 15th December 2016
By: judygreeneyes
December, January and February are rainy in San Diego. San Diego gets very little rain all year, only about 11 to 13 inches (28 to 33 cm) in the whole year. Even when it does rain, it is usually a very light rain. It is like living in a desert next to the ocean! Everyone says that people here don't know how to drive in the rain, and Judy says that's true. On December 15 it was a nice rainy day (Judy likes rain) so we went out to drive around the neighborhood with Hansi Hu and Tilla Mook.
