Aylmer Lookout, Canada - 12th May 2012
By: smaug
ciao ciao ciao,
Spring is coming here in Calgary . We had a bit snow during the week, but today it was nice, warm (well, kind of ) and sunny, so we headed to the mountains. Our trail passed by a lovely viewpoint over Lake Minnewanka .
Later we dived into the trees, but soon we started gaining elevation and saw the lake again.
Eventually we reached our destination, the site of an abandoned fire lookout. Here we could see the valley leading to Aylmer Pass,...
...Mt Aylmer,...
...and again Lake Minnewanka which, in the upper part, was still partly frozen .
On the way back we stopped on the lake shore to enjoy the sun . The water looked so crystal clear that my guests were tempted to go for a swim ...so I reminded them of the ice that was still covering part of the lake and the general consensus was that maybe it was better to postpone the swimming for a few months .

Midnight Peak, Canada - 16th June 2012
By: smaug
ciao ciao ciao,
Today, after a few quiet weekends, smaug took us again up to the mountains . As it often happens, the first part of the morning was spent between trees...a wonderful excuse to let smaug do the walking, take a little nap in his bag and make up for the sleep lost due to the early wake up . Eventually we reached a spot with a bit of view where we could look at both the mountains around us...
...and the prairies far away in the east .
The weather didn’t look very nice, but I was pleased to hear that, for once , smaug didn’t use it as an excuse to turn back and said there was no reason not to try reach our target of the day, that peak up there .
So, off we went. Listening to the wind howling outside the rucksack was very exciting (although my guests look more concerned than excited ), and when we reached the top we managed to take a few photos in the wind. From up there we could see the Nakiska ski area...
...mountains both south and north...
...and again the prairies in the distance .

ciao ciao ciao,
Today I informed my guests that they should get ready to go for a trip . They were obviously very excited and curious about our destination, but I thought that I’ll leave that as a surprise .

Selva di Valgardena, Italy - 2nd July 2012
By: smaug
ciao ciao ciao,
Today we headed into the heart of the dolomites , where early in the morning we were welcomed by pouring rain , and as we left the parking lot there were limited signs of improvement.
Still, we started walking up a narrow valley and when we came out of the trees things got better . We were following a very nice trail...
...with lovely peaks surrounding us all the time .
As we gained elevation, the view improved further...
...and we eventually saw the highest point of our day, a narrow pass at the top of the valley, oooh.
Once we got up there we saw a plateau that apparently we had to cross...
...and more mountains around us .
A few hours later , we were looking at the same plateau from the opposite side...
...before diving down this wonderful valley and go back to the car, where we arrived just minutes before the rain came back, perfect timing .
