Dinosaur Provincial Park, Canada - 17th July 2010

By: smaug

ciao ciao ciao!

Today we went visiting the Dinosaur Provincial Park: we were very excited at the idea of meeting a T-Rex strolling on the road ;). The drive was long and a bit boring, so we spent most of the time chatting.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/IMG_3016.jpg

We also stopped to take a couple of pictures at the prairies.

Eventually we reached dour destination :D. Here the prairies are carved deeply by the Red Deer River and its tributaries, so there are plenty of these deep gorges with luscious vegetation at the bottom.

At some points the landscape turns quite “lunar” :o.

Disappointingly, we didn’t meet any dinosaur walking around , just a lot of information panels describing all the different skeletons (an awful lot apparently) that were dug out in this area.

The Whistlers, Canada - 1st August 2010

By: smaug

ciao ciao ciao,

This week end we are in Jasper and today we immediately explored a bit around the town :). First we jumped on the Jasper Tramway that took us up a mountain with a lovely view of the valley, oooh.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3515.jpg

With a short walk we reached the top of a nearby mountain called The Whistlers, and the view was even better :).

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3530.jpg
http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3549.jpg

This peak is called The Whistlers because of the sheer number of Whistling Marmots living here. They didn’t seem to inclined to take a photo a with us :(, but we managed to at least take a decent shot of one of them.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3563.jpg

Later we moved a bit on the side of the peak to enjoy more views.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3557.jpg

Here you can see Jasper again with the Upper Station of the Jasper Tramway...

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3559.jpg

...and here is the ridge that we walked on to get o the top B).

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3560.jpg

From the opposite side of the mountain we could see in the haze  the Athabasca Valley, with the Athabasca River being that silver ribbon on the valley floor.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3548.jpg

What a great day :D!

Jasper, Canada - 2nd August 2010

By: smaug

ciao ciao ciao,

Today we were supposed to visit a glacier, but the weather had other plans so after trying to reach it and getting drenched in the process we had to change destination, oooh. So we checked out a little lake near Jasper town called Lake Annette. Nice place, and it wasn’t raining :).

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3569.jpg
http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3571.jpg

In the background you can see a green space. There was actually a beach there with someone swimming in the lake, crazy people :stare:!

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3580.jpg

Back to our hotel we gathered some wood...

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3590.jpg

...and decided to use the fireplace :D.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3591.jpg

Unfortunately smaug said that the room was already warm enough and we just have to chat imagining to sit in front of a fire .

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3967.jpg

Burnaby, Canada - 17th August 2010

By: smaug

ciao ciao ciao!

smaug has to work for a couple of weeks in the Vancouver area, and we TVs came along :D.  First thing we did as we arrived was to explore the hotel room. There is a big television...

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3991.jpg

...an (empty :() fridge...

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3989.jpg

...and a tiny microwave oven. Well, I am not sure about the waves, but the oven is micro indeed .

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3987.jpg

As we overheard smaug saying something about microwaved TVs for dinner :stare:, we quickly scrambled out of it and found a nice place where to spend the evening chatting...with some supplies close at hand ;).

Vancouver, Canada - 21st August 2010

By: smaug

ciao ciao ciao!

Today we had a chance to get a very quick glimpse of Vancouver :). Here we were just out of the sky train station looking at North Vancouver across Burrard Inlet.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3973.jpg

While here you can see Lions Gate Bridge behind us.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3977.jpg

Unfortunately smaug was a bit busy for the rest of the day and we were forgotten in his bag , maybe another time we'll see a bit more ;).

Burnaby, Canada - 22nd August 2010

By: smaug

ciao ciao ciao,

Today the weather wasn’t very nice, but we tried to take a walk around Burnaby anyway. So, we discovered that we are close to the western end of the Trans Canada Trail :o.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3984.jpg

Although we all agreed that more than 11,000km to get to Newfoundland :stare: seemed a bit too much even taking a few “shortcuts”, smaug pointed out that the trail is kind of exploring the country and so wanders around a lot, rather than crossing all the way to the east with a direct route, mah .

Between the trees we could occasionally see Burrard Inlet with some dockyards and the mountains north of Vancouver in the background :).

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN3981.jpg

And here our exploration was cut short by the rain that started falling down rather heavily :(.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN3993.jpg

I gave to both of them a big hug and wished them a safe journey.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN3996.jpg

Can’t wait to follow their new adventures :D.

Calgary, Canada - 6th September 2010

By: smaug

ciao ciao ciao,

today after a couple of rainy days we saw a nice clear sky and, since today is a holiday :D, we decided to go outside.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4010.jpg

As the temperature in the morning was far from summerish :stare:, we decided to give the sun a few hours to at least try warming up the air a bit.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4007.jpg

Eventually we went out for a walk near the Bow River :). All the way we had a nice view of the river...

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4016.jpg
http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4015.jpg

...with the occasional glimpse of downtown Calgary in the distance.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4012.jpg

The Canadian Pacific railway passes close to the river too. Behind me you should be able to see a train. This train was very short, just more than 80 railcars .

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4018.jpg

Eventually we reached our destination: a park next to the river with a steep hill in it. From there you can see downtown Calgary...

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4019.jpg

...and north Calgary.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4020.jpg

I am not sure how clear it is in the picture, but some of the trees are already turning yellow and golden, oooh :).
