Jacksonville, FL, USA - 7th March 2009

By: velvette

Hi mom, I've arrived in Jacksonville FL! My host, Trip, introduced me to Turk, who I'll be travelling in around town. He's a turtle backpack that Trip takes everywhere.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v95/velvetteasylum/march063.jpg

I was hungry so I helped make some deviled eggs. I helped gather the ingredients.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v95/velvetteasylum/march066.jpg

THen had to boiled the eggs.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v95/velvetteasylum/march065.jpg

Here's all the egg whites waiting for the yolk mixture.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v95/velvetteasylum/march067.jpg

All done!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v95/velvetteasylum/march068.jpg

We also warmed up some collard greens that Trip made earlier and that made a delicious meal.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v95/velvetteasylum/march069.jpg

Its been fun here so far. I'll update again soon, mom!

Hi Mom!

Shaggy arrived in Jacksonville this past weekend to hang out with us. When Shaggy arrived, she took us all out to eat at the Loop.

This is when Shaggy first got here

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy070.jpg

Me and Turk meeting Shaggy

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy071.jpg

Us posing for a picture. This was at the Loop, which is on a inlet off the St John's River.

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy073.jpg

Here's a good picture of the inlet. The St John's River runs through Jacksonville, which is why its called "the river city".

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy077.jpg

We had warm bleu cheese chips for an appetizer.

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy074.jpg

We shared a swiss portabella sandwich with Trip. She's a vegetarian so there's no meat on there.

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy080.jpg

For dessert, we ate a cupcake from Vanilla's

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy081.jpg

They looked so good!

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy082.jpg

I had the chocolate turtle cupcake.

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/xxy087.jpg

We're having lots of fun! I will update again soon. Love ya!

My host, Trip, has been sick all week so we haven't gone out and done much. She's also been really busy with work and school, so I helped her with studying.

She has a class practical next week on the skeletal system. Look at all the bones just inside the skull.

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/TVMARCH001.jpg

Here's a real 12-lead EKG she did on patient. It showed the lady having an STEMI aka heart attack!

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/TVMARCH006.jpg

Hopefully, Trip will feel better this weekend so we can go have fun!

Love, Herbie

Hi mom!

The weather has been nasty here all week so we've been stuck indoors. I've been just hanging out with Shaggy, watching Harry Potter movies.

Me and Shaggy took a pic with Trip's new owl figurine she found at a Thrift store.

http://i729.photobucket.com/albums/ww298/tripvsgod/owlandus.jpg

Shaggy will be leaving soon to go to his new host. I will miss hanging out with him.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Love,
Herbie

Remscheid-Hasten, Germany - 18th June 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
in the afternoon we took a walk to  the district Hasten, one of the oldest districts of Remscheid. Little mouse Sportie accompanied Katja and me. She will be travelling to China soon. Doesn't that sound great?

You can see many of the typical houses here. In this region, the "Bergisches Land", many houses are timberframed houses or covered with slate. Also typical are green shutters. Due to its natural conditions, Remscheid's districts are not close together, but they extend into the surrounding forrests and valleys. You can see everywhere, that the whole municipal area is surrounded by lots of green and forrests.

This is the new building of a home for the elderly, ...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3551/3639312836_03f58249c2.jpg?v=0

... and this the original building.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3402/3638502305_351e2b0f74.jpg?v=0

We decided to visit a friend and ask her if she wanted to accompany us for a walk.

Our path is leading along allotment gardens. I really like this overgrowed path.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3579/3638504431_3e4114bb32.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3336/3638504523_f7e9cd0c60.jpg?v=0

Here are more pretty old houses, built close together. I think nobody like the idea of a fire here. For fire engines it es almost impossible to reach those houses.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3308/3638502885_0aff96061d.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3636/3638501623_9e897e6580.jpg?v=0

Can you see the factory in the background of the next picture? This is where we started our walk.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3651/3639314138_f0acce68ea.jpg?v=0

On our way home we went to a recently opened garden center.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3643/3639314258_1afd839828.jpg?v=0

Here are funny shaped trees ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2475/3639313396_bc73309273.jpg?v=0

... and here are several sorts of stones, which you can use for your garden paths or simply as a decoration.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3349/3638501993_94ea3013ed.jpg?v=0

Could you imagine to put blue glass into your garden ?!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3625/3638502441_8ca87f4641.jpg?v=0

Later we had to buy a few things to prepare a melon sorbet. I don't have the slightest idea what this could be, but we'll see.

Bye
Herbie

Remscheid, Germany - 21st June 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we took a walk along the Trasse des Werkzeugs (Route of Tools), which is a lane for pedestrians and cyclists which were built on a closed railway track. It was sponsored by local tool producing companies. Remscheid is famous for it's tool producing industry since medieval times. That's why this lane is called Trasse des Werkzeugs.

The weather was not good, we were in hope of not becoming wet.

From here you have an overview across the outskirts of the neighbour city Wuppertal.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3345/3649002799_f2bf595145.jpg?v=0

Behind me you can see allotment gardens. They have many garden areas here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3633/3649807474_3ec70dc456.jpg?v=0

At an intersection some signs with the logos of some sponsors are installed (with a really beautiful container yard in the background :D ).

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3313/3649002561_3c88cef481.jpg?v=0

The first sign is showing the crest of Remscheid.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3579/3649002423_7bc4502b79.jpg?v=0

Here we had to cross a street.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2463/3649807768_fff212951f.jpg?v=0

You can find many industrial buildings along the lane, some of them already dilapidated.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3364/3649807676_87f38378d2.jpg?v=0

You can also find rest areas here.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2444/3649808112_17e60b1d40.jpg?v=0

This lane is leading to the central station, we are close to it as you might guess.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2477/3649808554_f669c22afb.jpg?v=0

Here is the instanteanous ending of the Trasse des Werkzeugs, it will be completed soon.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3619/3649808372_4335586ff4.jpg?v=0

On our way back home it started to rain and we had to hurry home.

Bye

Remscheid, Germany - 29th June 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
I climbed into Katja's bag in the morning. I heard her talking about a ToyVyoager waiting at the post office. She wanted to pick up the new guest there in the morning.

I went with her and we rescued Evie from her envelope. The sun was shining so we took some photos in front of the city hall.

The city hall was built in 1906, was nearly destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in the late 1940s, early 1950s in a more modern style. The tower is 48 m high.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2586/3672045123_e58a5a488d.jpg?v=0

The heraldic animal of Remscheid is the lion (one with two tails). You can find one on a pillar in front of the city hall.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2483/3672853180_a02277c480.jpg?v=0

It was a good idea to take the photos in the morning. When Katja finished work at 6:00 p.m. it was raining.

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk in the afternoon, although it is really hot and humid. Katja told us that we should get used to a temperature like they have in Spain.

Spain?!

I don't know what she was talking about ...

We went to the district Hasten, which is one of the oldest districts of the municipal area. You can find many pretty old houses here.

Here you can see the German Tool Museum.

This Patrician house is also a museum, a museum of local history. It was built in the late 1700s.

We were almost home than, look at those pretty old houses.

Hi Mummy,
we went to the public library today.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2489/3684328504_1cdc691739.jpg?v=0

The library has three levels: Specialised books, DVDs and audio books on the ground floor, novels and poetry on  the first floor and children's books in the basement.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3619/3683515429_f027d9f809.jpg?v=0

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2486/3684327920_c05688131f.jpg?v=0

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2452/3684328202_057f02748b.jpg?v=0

Katja's favourite books!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2245/3684328364_61eb819c7f.jpg?v=0

Outside again the warmth was overwhelming, so we only took a short walk through the city centre back home.

Here you can see the theatre in the background as well as the shopping mall and the tower of the city hall.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3630/3683516179_e6dda90e7b.jpg?v=0

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2595/3683516385_f468eb0a71.jpg?v=0

Back on the shopping street ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2557/3683516533_9c245fcbcc.jpg?v=0

This is the main entrance of the shopping mall with a fountain in front of it.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2049/3684329056_333210fea3.jpg?v=0

From here you can see the green environment of Remscheid.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2456/3684329102_eb7aa99ca2.jpg?v=0

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2580/3684329370_62774bdfc0.jpg?v=0

This is the water tower. From here the inhabitants of the city centre are supplied with drinking water which is pumped from a dam in one of the valleys to the highest point of the city centre.

Hi Mummy,
we went to the railway station to go to Düsseldorf airport. We'll fly to Barcelona!

When we left the house, we found an envelope on the stairs with cute little mouse UrselHH inside. She arrived just in time to accompany us to Spain.

At the railway station we climbed out of Katja's bag to get a bit of fresh air.

We are at Duessldorf International Airport now. After the check-in we spent some time having a coffee.

Coffee? Ehhmm .... Penny-Bo had a glass of sparkling wine against her fear of flying. I also tasted a drop.

Afterwards we took a walk through the Airport. We also went to the visitor's platform.
