Travelog for: Germania

Graz, Austria - 4th May 2009

By: marcie08

Hi Mom!

As it was very beautiful - at least one day - on the weekend, we had an icecream-feast! Yummi!

And we also did some mor sightseeing. I visited a different part of Graz, the Sporgasse.
I went to the Palais Saurau, where a Turk with his dagger is looking down from an opening just below the cornice of the Palais. There are many different stories about the Turk there: One is that the Turks had taken Graz, except the fortress on the Schlossberg. When a Turkish pasha was having dinner in today's Palais Saurau, a cannon ball shot from Schlossberg and hit his plate with the delicious roast. The latter flew out of the window. What else could he do but gaze after it? In his rage, he ordered the withdrawal of the Turks from Graz.

As in fact, however, the Turks have never occupied Graz, the story must have been different. Opinions about the original function of the wooden figure with Turkish features are divided. Maybe the Counts of Saurau just followed a fashion which caught on after the great victory over the Turks in 1683, and decorated their house "alla turca".

Another story is that when the cannon ball hit the Palais, the Turk wanted to flee the place, but had eaten to many dumplings and therefore got stuck there.

Anyway, you can see me with the Turk in the background.

And then we also went to the Karmeliterplatz, to rest there in front of the little fountain!

Hi Mom!

Say hello the World's best gardening bear... that's what I call myself now!

We went to a garden center today and came home with the car filled to the top with flowers! But we didn't just buy flowers, we also got strawberries and cranberries and cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes and herbs!

It was pretty messy with the flower soil and so on, but after we had cleaned up the balcony, it all looked so beautiful! :D

And we also bought some pea-seeds. On a picture you can see me writing on the labels.

So what do you think? Ain't I a brilliant gardener?

Love, Germania

Wow, Mom- guess what happened!

When I was looking through my host mum's flat, I found a basket full of stuffed toys! I found a black toy, but I'm not quite sure what it is.. It's something between a dog and a bear

His name is Snuttig - said his name-tag on his foot. Well, we started talking and I told him aout toyvoyagers.com and he got really excited! So we went to my host mum and she decided to make him a TV! Isn't it great?

We then talked about his life missions and so on and then put him a t-shirt on!

He will soon get his own travelog and then we have to search for hosts for him!

You know what that means? I completed a mission!!! B)

Yippeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Hi Mom!

We did some more sightseeing today! We went to the Burg (Castle complex) built by Frederick III.
In the Burg you can find the famous Gothic double staircase. You can see me sitting there on a picture.

Some monarchs chose Graz as their residence. That's why there's a big Mausoleum next to the Burg. You can see me in front of it.

Next to the Musoleum is the Cathedral, where I was resting on the stairs.

Hi Mom!

Did you like the flowers?

Here is another update on the Mother's day celebration. We had BBQ yesterday, as you can see on the picture. We were sitting in the garden with my host-mom's parents and her in-laws. And their dog, Benni.
You can see her as she sniffed us! Though she is huge compared to us, we weren't worried, as she is a very friendly dog!

Oh, and we also had a vanilla-raspberry-cake. Yumm....  :D

We were also really lucky with the waether, it was warm and sunny!

Hi Mom!

Sorry that you haven't heard from me for so long... I had much to do!

Here comes an update.

I went to the city center again and visited the number one meeting point The Weikhard-Uhr! That's a clock in front of a jeweller store and a place to meet for first dates or meeting friends!

Then we went on to the City Hall. You see me in front of it. The next picture is me looking in the atrium, where you can see the entrance of the Sacher, a café where they serve the traditional Sacher cake.

After that I had a nice coffee and a creamcheese bagle in a café.

At the end of my city trip we went to the Bärenland, a shop where they sell gummi-baers. Yummi!

That was fun!

Bye!

Hi Mom!

I visited the opera today! Just from the outside though. You can see me on the small opera, which was built for the blind, as it was at the Kunsthaus.

And I also met Beethoven  ;)

Next to the oper is a piece of modern art, built during the Styrian art festival Steirischer Herbst.

Bye- your musician-Germania!

Graz, Austria - 20th May 2009

Hi Mom!

Today I helped to make cupcakes and muffins! This was great! I measured the ingridients and whisked them together. Then I lined the muffin tins and filled them. I put it in the oven, waited 25 minutes and controlled then with a stick, if it cames out clean when inserted into the muffin, so that I knew that they were ready. I took a oven mitt, took the muffins out of the oven and let them cool! I'm a chef! :D

And if you ask yourself how the muffins were ... delicious  B)

Bye!

Hi Mom!

Today we ate the muffins we had baked yesterday. My hosts had friends invited for a huge breakfast. You can see me on the table as I checked if everything was ready!
The breakfast was really great but I ate so much so that I had to recover on the couch!

Hope I don't gain too much weight  ;).

Liebe Grüße nach Hause

Hi Mom!

I think I didn't tell you that MrCoolHH has arrived- well, he is here now. He likes everything red!
We had a delicious Linzertorte today. The cake was a souvenir from Linz and a present from my host-mom's dad!

Sadly you can't taste the cake through the internet...

Bye, Germania
