Wuppertal-Beyenburg, Germany - 2nd November 2008

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we took a walk in Wuppertal-Beyenburg. Wuppertal is one of the neighbour towns of Remscheid. Beyenburg is a very old district, located at the river Wupper. In former times they had many dye works and weaving mills in Wuppertal along the river Wupper.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3187/2998456503_60a1ab4ae4.jpg?v=0

First we wallked through the forrest.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3189/2999295146_d1a27cdbe3.jpg?v=0

Here you can see a papermill, also located at the river Wupper. They are producing wall papers here. Can you see the weir?

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3051/2998457063_3b7ccf9d22.jpg?v=0

Later we saw this fly agaric in the forrest.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3239/2999295596_f2c3ed9edc.jpg?v=0

I also want to show you the "Schwebebahn" of Wuppertal. Schwebebahn is a suspended monorail, travelling about 12 metres above the surface of the river Wupper, about 8 metres above the streets. At one point the railway crosses a motorway.

It's getting dark really early now, before 6:00 p.m.

Remscheid-Luettringhausen, Germany - 6th November 2008

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we met a friend of Katja in Luettringhausen, one of the older districts of Remscheid. They have two churches in this district and many of the typical half-timbered houses and those covered with schist.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3066/3012135395_8c9125f457.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/3012972326_07cf8182fd.jpg?v=0

A really tawdry house decoration.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3072/3012135843_5a12c911d5.jpg?v=0

Now you can see the whole district with its church towers. The third tower on the right side belongs to the town hall.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3001/3012135647_984c2fd0c6.jpg?v=0

We walked through the outskirts then. Here are horse ranches and farms.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3201/3012973290_ccf15e1193.jpg?v=0

We went to a restaurant to have dinner. The restaurant is called "Lagerhaus" (store-house). Katja had something really delicious with salmon and pike perch, fried potatoes and broccoli. Of course we had a few beers.

Hi Mummy,
It's snowing here. It already started yesterday with a bad storm. In the late afternoon  the falling rain turned into snow.

In the morning we all took a look out of the kitchen window.

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk to the muncipal park in the afternoon. Everything was covered with snow and looked beautiful. We started at the pond where turtles and ducks are living.

Remscheid, Germany - 1st December 2008

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

today we celebrated Theodore's birhday.

We had fruit in rum (Rumtopf) in the evening.

Rumtopf is a favourite delicay which is made in the summer months with fruits, rock candy and of course rum.  Our Rumtopf is containing strawberries, cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, ananas and kiwi.

It is tasted usually in late autumn.

We had a lot of fun with the Rumtopf.

Remscheid, Germany - 3rd December 2008

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
it's snowing again! We took a photo out of the roof-light, so I could see more of the vicinity.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3033/3080285397_05c689d442.jpg?v=0

Uuhh, it's cold, but I love snow although.

We were watching Katja when she had to shovel snow, in the background you can see the front door of the house where I'm living at the moment.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3055/3081124054_ffdfce91e2.jpg?v=0

Katja took us into town to the office. The next photos are made on our way to the town centre. We have to walk for about 10 minutes to get there.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3203/3080285741_5b23066302.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3063/3080285877_b5e7fcc9ac.jpg?v=0

These large forceps are marking the entrance to the shopping street.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3206/3080286171_ae0b76d23e.jpg?v=0

And here is the town hall with snow covered trees in front of it.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3028/3081124890_f2aa609581.jpg?v=0

The christmas market is located in front of the town hall. Here you can see the large ice skating rink in the middle of the christmas market.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3253/3081125072_32a34001e1.jpg?v=0

We had to go to work then. In the afternoon we ate some delicious tangerines. They had a lot of pits inside. I was a little angry because I had to spit them out all the time. Katja explained to me that those pits would be very important because they are seeds for new tangerine trees.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3008/3080286635_7851072d7d.jpg?v=0

Seeds for more trees?

That sounds good. We decided to try to raise a tangerine tree from them.

When Katja finished work it was already dark outside. We took another walk to the christmas market. Katja showed me the beautifully illuminated town hall. In daylight you cannot see it of course.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3140/3080287057_5374f5b5a5.jpg?v=0

Tomorrow we are going to  plant a forrest of tangerine trees.

Remscheid, Germany - 4th December 2008

Hi Mummy,

Big Bird from Japan arrived today. I told him that I was going to plant hundreds of tangerine trees. He liked the idea because he wants to learn a lot while he is travelling. But he didn't want to believe that I'm going to plant hundreds of  trees. We'll see!

Katja prepared the working space in the kitchen with a newspaper to keep it from getting too dirty. She also fetched a flower pot filled with potting soil from the cellar.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3224/3083001998_a2ea85ca68.jpg?v=0

I counted my tangerine pits: Eleven pits. I'm afraid that's not enough for planting hundreds of trees.

Even worse, the flower pot's size was only suitable for a maximum of five pits.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3066/3082164655_e294acb362.jpg?v=0

I had to accept this. Big Bird helped me to cover the pits with soil. Then they had to be watered.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3196/3083002256_02500c2264.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3193/3082164799_45437708f1.jpg?v=0

Yes, that was enough water.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3112/3083002394_0e9e7513cb.jpg?v=0

Katja told me that the tangerine seeds would need warmth and light to germinate. We put the flower pot onto the window sill in the living room. It will stay warm there because of the heating underneath the window.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3214/3083002486_0ee910c790.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3083/3082165105_5e19e93039.jpg?v=0

Now I  have to be patient. Maybe the germs will be visible in a week or two.

Remscheid, Germany - 13th December 2008

Hi Mummy,

we baked christmas cookies today! We made nut macaroons.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3207/3105444334_f230e6a8d8.jpg?v=0

You need
100 g ground hazelnuts
250 g flour
200 g butter
125 g sugar
about 60 hazelnuts

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3187/3104612831_db769e0e08.jpg?v=0

First we had to mix ground nuts and flour. Then we had to stirr the butter foamily and add sugar. Flour and nut mix had to be worded into butter and sugar.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/3105444560_5af6128782.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3076/3105444630_64f52a7357.jpg?v=0

From the dough we had to made small balls. Those were put onto a baking tray. As a last step we had to place a nut into the middle of every little dough ball.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3104/3104613313_3578c249b4.jpg?v=0

The cookies had to bake for about 20 minutes.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3288/3104613461_e425b87040.jpg?v=0

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3015/3104613875_296e449e92.jpg?v=0

It's done! The cookies are delicious.

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we decided to come home for a while. We are travelling now.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/3122224123_ebfa36e2da.jpg?v=0

We had a great time here in Germany but I am a little bit homesick now.

Katja will keep an eye on the trees that I planted two weeks ago. She will update photos when the little trees will show the first leafes.
