Hi Mummy,
I am not lost!!! Finally I arrived in Germany. The postman tried to deliver me to my host Katja on July 7th. Katja was not in town than, so he took me back to the post office and left a notification. Today I was picked up at the post office. Like Katja already guessed, my package was probably stuck at the customs authority. Now I'm here and I will enjoy my stay. In Germany the weather is bad, it's rainy and rather cold. Next week it will be better, Katja told me. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
we celebrated my birthday today! Little cat Prance was still asleep, she came later and Katja lit my birthday candle once more. Prance even helped me to eat the fish By the way, the other ToyVoyagers are calling me "Baby Stork", they say that I would probably be a stork, not a pelican. They said that with my red beak, legs and feet I would rather look like a stork. What do you think, Mummy? Katja told me I should not care about that. Both pelicans and storks were eating fish, so there is no need to worry about being a stork or a pelican. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
today the weather was better again. First we had to do some shopping. On our way to the shop Katja showed us a bit of the city. This intersection is close to my current home, the scaffolded building in the background is the local court. The pretty house on the right side is one of the typical "Bergisch Houses", covered with slate, having green shutters. In the late afternoon we took a walk to the municipal park. To get there we walked along this nice alley. Pretty hydrangea in a front garden ... In the municipal park they have a pond with ducks and turtles. Here you can see a memorial for the dead of several earlier wars, before World War I, situated in a flower garden. On the next photo you can see the outskirts of Remscheid and the neighbour city Wuppertal. Bye Baby Lican |

olgamaus Posted Jul 16, 2009, 12:04 pm |
Hi Mummy,
we went to Wuppertal today. Wuppertal is one of the neighbour cities. Katja had to buy a few things at Hornbach, her favourite DIY-store. She had to make a new interior for her large rat cage. Afterwards we went to the Botanical Garden. Wuppertal is situated, like the name already says, at the river Wupper, along a deep valley with the city centre in the valley itself, large parts on the steep slopes of the valley. You can find the Botanical Garden on a very high point, overlooking the city centre in the valley. In 1890 it was a school garden first. Later, in 1908 a textile industrialist built his country house here, the "Eller'sche Villa". Later the Elisenturm Elisen Tower) was also built here, which is now the focal point of the garden. Since 1929 it is a municipal garden, open daily. This is the Elisenturm. First we entered the tower and enjoyed the fantastic overview. Here you can see the new greenhouses, they were built in 2006. We went to the greenhouses than. Here you can see plants from the warmer parts of the world, like palms. We went into the garden than. I saw lots of pretty flowers and interesting trees, also the former country house. This bed is showing typical plants of a moor area, also insect-eating plants. I also saw a plant with vast leafs. The leafs were swinging with the wind. Back home we helped to install the new things to the rat cage. I will show it to you soon. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
the weather was bad today - like so often here. So we only took a walk in the municipal area. Katja went with a friend and took me and cat Prance with her. She said it would be enough to have two wet ToyVoyagers if it should start to rain again Of course I am used to become wet … but a cat? Poor Prance ... We walked along the Route of Tools (Trasse des Werkzeugs). This is a lane for pedestrians and cyclists which was built on a closed railway track. It was sponsored by local tool producing companies. Remscheid is famous for it's tool producing industry since medieval times. That's why this lane is called Trasse des Werkzeugs. It starts at the central railway statioin and is following a former track for freight trains to the district Hasten, it is about 5 km long. We walked the opposite direction, from Hasten to the central railway station. We went through the municipal park to get to Hasten. Today I saw the observatory, situated in the entrance area of the park. From the Route of Tools you have a great view to the suburbs of the neighbour cities, here it is Wuppertal again. Of course we had to cross roads sometimes. At an intersection some signs with the logos of some sponsors are installed. The first one is showing the crest of Remscheid. You can find some artwork along this route. Here is a statue made of the waste of punched parts for tools. They were welded together and later painted by kids. Can you spot us sitting in the coloured thing? Here we are! Those old houses were built really close to the railway track. This is the temporary initial point. The route still has to be completed over a few hundred meters to the central station. They were building a new central station during the last two years. It was completed last month. Now the Route of Tools also will be finished soon. From here walked home through the city centre. We bought some pieces of cake in the bakery on the right side of the next photo. This is one of the churches in the city centre. We saw this funny fountain here, with a lot of whirling and spattering mechanism. Here you can see the beginning of the main shopping street. This is the main entrance of the shopping mall. Of course there is nothing going on because it is Sunday, all shops except of cafes, some flower shops, bakeries and petrol stations are closed in Germany. At the end of the shopping street you can find those giant forceps, as a symbol for the tool producing industry. We also took a fast look at the city hall, which is the building with the tower. From here we went to the home of Katja's friend an enjoyed our cake and coffee. By the way, it did not rain, so we kept dry. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
finally I arrived in Sagres. After the exhausting flight I'm relaxing on the balcony of our apartment. Now I have to unpack the suitcases. The outlook is georgeous! I wanted to take a first look at the beach actually, but I almost flew away! Let's see if I can find a calm place. This is much better! Here I have a great view to the Praia do Bordeira at the west coast of Algarve. At Prada da Mareta near Sagres you can find wind-shaded rocks, even niches for storks (or pelicans?) Now I'd like to have a cosy blanket and some sardines. Also a pretty place. The beach is situated wind-shaded in a bay and surrounded by rocks. Maybe I'll go swimming later. Dinner in Sagres. I ordered boiled shrimps with aioli and white bread and a beer. Cheers! Bye for today Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
this is my new friend, Figo. He is a famous Portuguese football player. He owns a bar at the south coast, at the marina. Here you can see him better. At the marina they even have a cow, wearing a shirt. I wanted to take a rodeo ride, but the stupid cow did not move. This is Silva da Ponte - a memorial to the ancient navigators. Fortunately he did not turn the steering wheel, otherwhise I would have had to vomit again. At Vilamoura marine, one of the largest in Europe, I wanted to buy this pretty yacht. But the owner was not willing to swap the yacht with my sardines. |

olgamaus Posted Aug 17, 2009, 7:09 pm |
In Algoz/Pera at the South Coast I visited the Fiesa 2009, the largest sand sculpture event in the world. Artists from all over the world built a sandy world referring the theme "Discoveries".
The old Egypts were also present. After Ina shot the photo I flew away because the mummie was really scaring ... Such a day in the sun is really exhausting. That's why I had a nap with the elephants. My holiday hosts and their son become fond of me really quick. And I also had lots of strokes. Bye for now Baby Lican |

this is the rough Atlantic Coast of Algarve, the West Coast. I'm sitting on an outlook-runway, somewhere between Praia do Amado and Praia do Bordeira. |

Hi Mummy,
today we made a trip to Praia da Luz at the South Coast. The sea is more calmed here and it is not so windy, but the beach is really crowded. Let's drive back to the West Coast! I found more privacy in my palm at the promenade of Praia da Luz. |

olgamaus Posted Aug 17, 2009, 7:45 pm |
Hi Mummy,
today we had cultural programme. I am sitting on a menhir from the Stone Age at Forte da Ponta de Bandeira. Forta da Ponta da Badeira is an old fortress which was built in 17th century as protection of the harbour. An exhibition is telling about the ages of serendipities. This wall is as white as me, A treasure chest! I tried to have a look inside, if there were gold and jewels in the chest, but unfortunately the lid was too heavy. It's good that I don't have to live in such an old door knocker. In Lagos they have strange marine fauna. I liked this one much more. I caught a giant sardine for dinner!!! Hopefully I'll find a barbeque big enough for it. Oh, this octopus is afraid of me. He is the first being which is afraid of me ... Poor octopus, I won't do you any harm. Here you can see the famous Ponta da Piedade, close to Lagos. Stairs are running to the water. From here you can take boat trips through the caves and grottos. More stairs, it seems to take no end. I don't want to walk stairs no more. I'll stay here and wait until Ina will pick me up again. This is the lighthouse of Ponta da Piedade. Bye for now Baby Lican |
||
olgamaus Posted Aug 17, 2009, 7:51 pm |
One more lighthouse. It's the one of Cabo de Sao Vicente in Sagres. His beam can be seen in a distance of 90 km, it is the brightest lighthouse of whole Europe.

Hi Mummy,
this is Praia do Amado at the West Coast. You can find surfers here, a surfing school is also situated here. I found a new friend, a teddy bear. His name is Moon. When it gets dark, stars and the moon are glowing on his belly. We spent a wonderful day at Praia do Bordeira. Because I'm almost flying away with the wind, my vacations hosts built a tent for me. I have my own fortress against the sea. Now the Atlantic Ocean can come This is my current host family. Can you spot my shadow? Here are soooo many rocks ... ... and also plants. Please don't ask me which plants they are. When we drive along the 4 km long coast road, every 5 m you have a different view. That's all for today Baby Lican |

olgamaus Posted Aug 26, 2009, 1:53 pm |
Hi Mummy,
we went shopping in Albufeira today. This is the Algarve-Shopping-Centre. It's logo is a stork! A shady place to rest. Oops! They have even bats here! Evening in Albufeira. They have a pretty city centre here, musicians are playing in the streets. Bye for today Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
today we visited Faro. Here you can find a marina, but here also nobody was willing to swap a yacht for my sardines. Here you can see a metal-sculputre close to the city centre, a bike with its driver. Somehow weird I wasn't afraid of this statue. I lost my way and landed on a palm tree. By the way, in Faro you can find many storks at breeding season. Breeding season is over, so I did not meet any stork. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
we visited Carvoeiro today, situated at the South Coast. This is the lighthouse of Carvoeiro, it is called "Farol do Alfanzina". The name of these rock formations is "Algar Seco", a few hundred meters along the coast east of the main square and beach, is a popular nature site where ocean wave erosion has carved out grottos, islets and “water chimneys”. A stair is leading into an fantastic labyrinth. Fourty the starfish and Mandelöhrchen (almond ear) the girly bear, went with me. Both are living with my holiday hosts. This is the view from the coast road to Algar Seco. Evening ambiance in Carvoeiro. After a stroll around the town we went back to Sagres. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
we made a boat tour today. The life vest is a little bit too large for me, but my holiday Mum buckled my safety belt really well. We made a dolphin-watching-tour with the red boat. We did see dolphins, but they did not stand still for a photo with me. Here you can see what you can do in our hotel. My favourite pastime was sleeping, eating and parking the car. Those flowers are a lily species, I suppose. Here is Fortaleza de Sagres There are rumors that Henry the Navigator, a famous navigator who lived from 1394 till 1460 in Sagres, had his school here. The fortress like it appears nowadays was built in 1793. This lighthouse belongs to the fortress site. From this tower of the fortress you can overlook large parts of the coast. This is "rosa dos ventos", a circle on the ground, built in 15th century. It is divided into 40 equal sections. It's meaning is not clear. Here the circle is more visible - me also This is the bell tower of a small curch within the fortress. Bye Baby Lican |

this is a viewpoint at the coast road between Amado and Bordeira. A "throne" in the rocks for a bird like me. So many rocks. Can you spot me? Hold tight everybody! I hope this wave won't wash me away. They promised me beach holiday, but it seems to be rock holiday! Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
this is a neolithic menhir, close to Raposeira. A menhir is a large upright standing stone. Menhirs are widely distributed across Europe, Africa, and Asia, but are most numerous in Western Europe. They originate from several different periods across pre-history, and were erected as part of a larger Megalithic culture that flourished in Europe and beyond. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
Katja took me with her when she had to go to the post office during her work time. The weather was fantastic, so she could not resist to take me with her. We walked along the pedestrian area, where you can find those large forceps as a symbol for the tool producing industry here. I have been here at the entrance of the shopping mall before, but today the weather is much better. We are now coming to the central bus station. The white building in the background is the publishing house of the local newspaper Remscheider General-Anzeiger (RGA). This is the new entrance of the theatre. Here you can see the city hall with the market place in front of it. The farmer's market is held on Wednesday and Saturday. The tower of the city hall is 48 m high. The original city hall was nearly destroyed in World War II, than rebuilt afterwards in a more modern style. When we went home at lunch time Katja showed me the water tower. From here the inhabitants of the city centre are supplied with drinking water, which is pumped from a dam in a valley to the highest point of the city area. Only two more minutes to walk and we reach our home. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today in one of the oldest districts of Remscheid. It is called "Hasten" and is situated in the North of the municipal, leading into a valley. First I'll show you my current home. I am living in the attic storey. The house was built in 1904. In a nearby park Katja showed us a pillar which is dedicated to the first town twinning of Remscheid and Quimper in France. The pillar is also showing the coat of arms of Remscheid. We played a bit on a small playground in the park. Katja told us that we would walk through the municipal park to get to Hasten. Here we are on our way to the municipal park. From here we had a first look to Hasten, in the valley. The pink coloured house is an old factory building, you can find many of them between the tenements. We reached Hasten than, a district surrounded by woodland. We saw a lot of old houses and really narrow streets here. We saw a beautiful Patrician villa here, built in 1798. A museum which is showing life, furniture and so on of the last centuries is situated nowadays here, also the German Tool Museum. The area behind the villa belongs to the Tool Museum. We decided to walk home than, this time uphill for some time Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
we visited Düsseldorf today. Düsseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is situated on the River Rhine, and is renowned for its many events and also for its fashion and trade fairs. We went here by train and started our trip at MediaHafen (Media Harbour), a former harbour which is now a modern business quarter. First we saw an interesting building called "Stadttor" (city gate). This is the old harbour, now a modern business quarter with a lot of interesting buildings. We walked towards River Rhine than. There is a bridge overspanning the inner harbour. From here you have a great overview. From here you can also take a good photo of Rheinturm (Rhine Tower), a telecommunication tower with a rotating restaurant behind the windows. Katja showed us the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia, the parliament. Finally we walked towards the old town of Düsseldorf, along River Rhine Promenade. Close to the city the promenade is full of bars. We saw that one of the excursion boats was just coming home. It should start its tour about 10 minutes later, so we decided to make a boat trip. The trip was supposed to last for about 90 minutes. From here I had a look at the Altstadt (old town). The Düsseldorfer Altstadt is known as the longest bar in the world (»längste Theke der Welt«), because the small old town has more than 300 bars and discotheques. We were off than, downstream first. In the meantime the boat made a turn and was going upstream. We went into town than. This is part of the Altstadt with its many bars and pubs. We enjoyed an Altbier here, a special beer which is only brewn in this region. Next I will show you the old city hall, situated in the old town. We bought some postcards and a funny fridge magnet. This is the famous Königsallee, a shopping street where you can find exclusive clothings, jewelry,shoes and other accessoires. We went home by train than. It was almost 8:00 p.m. the shops were closing. I was very tired, but not too tired to write a postcard to you. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
we took a long walk today in the neighbour city Solingen. We started our tour in Solingen-Unterburg, which is one of the oldest districts of Solingen. You can find many old houses here. I went with Katja, Erika and Hugo today. I met a friend of Hugo here We walked along River Wupper the whole time. Next to our path you can find steep rocks. We crossed River Wupper here. This thing was originally used at the nearby Sengbach-Talsperre (Sengbach-dam). This is a historic building, Balkhauser Kotten. A museum is situated here. More rocks along our path ... We reached a hamlet called Balkhausen. It is a rather rural district. They have nice old timber-framed houses here. We walked through another forrest. We met River Wupper again. After hours of walking (about 14 km) we reached Wipperkotten, a historical grindery which is still in use. It was open for visitors today. Visitors were allowed to take a knife with them, for the grinder to grind it. Of course Katja brought her favourite knif with her. Wipperkotten was built as a grindery in the early 1600's and it is the last existing twin building of formerly 26 grinding sheds at the lower river Wupper. Two undershot waterwheels are spinning between the historical buildings. This building complex is under protection of historical monuments since 1955. Of course we had a look inside the buildings. This is the axis of one of the waterwheels. This is one of the historical workplaces. This is today's workplace of the grinder. The grinder is preparing the belt grinder machine ... We were allowed to sit on the grind machine to have a good overview at the grinder's work. Our knife is as sharp as a razor blade now - thanks to the grinder What is he going to do with the hammer? Whow! It looks like fireworks! It was time to start back for home than. We saw canoes here, can you see them at the opposite riverbank? We had to walk uphill than to reach the city centre. Here I also saw some pretty old houses. What a wonderful front door! We went home by bus and train than. Bye Baby Lican |

Hi Mummy,
I'm on my way to Florida now. Bye Baby Lican |
||
tarepanda Posted Oct 3, 2009, 4:54 am |
Hey Mommy I am in Florida now!! It's nice weather here and I get to meet some new friends, Mocha and Ebba. They ask me where I want to go. I tell them my mission is to visit beaches so they take me to Miami Beach, which they say are very famous.
Here we are, on the causeway towards the beach. We pass by the Miami port. This is a cruise ship to the Carribeans, called Carnival Liberty. It has 110,000 tonnes, is 932 ft long and carries 2,974 passengers. A huge ship indeed!! I hope one day I can get to travel in one. My host tells me they sometimes go to Europe too. We are now on the street of Miami Beach. The scenery looks very different from Hong Kong and Europe indeed, with a lot of palm trees and very sunny weather. We park our car and begin to walk along the broadwalk. We pass by a marina, where people park their yachts when they are not using them. All the yachts are so beautiful. I am so happy I can smell the sea in the air! Okay here we are, at South Point Park, which is at the southern point of Miami Beach. Do you see the island with houses behind me? It's called Fisher Island, and according to U.S. census is the richest place in the country. Okay this picture is proof that I am in the U.S.! This is a restuarant. It's a long walk! I still can't see the beach yet. We rest on the grass a bit. I wish we have a picnic basket. I can see something! Is that a lighthouse? Oh, it's a life guard tower! And it looks like there is a wedding couple up there taking pictures. That sure looks very romantic. I meet some seagulls but no pelicans yet. Behind me is the Atlantic Ocean. Wow! On the other side of the ocean is Portugal and Germany. When I was in Portugal I was looking at the same ocean, but on the other side. That's so amazing. I say a big hi to Olgamaus. Can she hear me? |

As Miami is the closest major U.S. city from Cuba, there is a substantial Cuban immigration population here, and therefore a lot of Cuban restaurants.
Today we go to a place called El Rey de Las Fritas, which means The King of Fries, to try the Cuban hamburger. I wonder how it is different from McDonald's? Anyway, I am in America now so I should eat some hamburger. Let's look at the menu! We order a guarapo, and a fruta bomba. Guess what they are? Sugar cane juice and papaya shake! This is a Cuban hamburger, a Frita. Instead of the French fries on the side, looks like they put it inside the hamburger!! They also use paprika to make the meat looks very red. Hmmm... it's actually tastier than it sounds! After the meal, we finish with a cup of cordadito. It's espresso coffee with milk and sugar. After lunch, we go by to our host's friend's place. She is having a garage sale. Which means putting everything she doesn't need out in the front yard for people to stop by and buy. It's a popular way to get ride of unwanted stuff, and there are professionals who go around to hunt for good bargains. We see some toys and go over to say hi. Our host wants to adopt some to be a TV but she decides they are too big to travel. I do wish they can find a good home nonetheless. Good luck! |

Our host received some Harry Potter coloring book through a BookCrossing, where she is a member. It's a bookring, which means that the book goes around to different members, who read it and pass it on, till the last participant sends it back to the person who started the ring. For this coloring book ring, instead of reading a book, we pick a few pages to color. Of course we are happy to help our host.
Hmm, it's hard to decide which pages to color. Yuck! Who wants to color Umbridge? She is EVIL!!! BAD!! I want to tear out the page or smear her face but I decide it's not a polite thing to do. We vote to color this page. I will color the pumpkins a lovely orange. We also want to color Dumbledore and Snape, because they are two greatest headmasters of Hogswart. That's a lot of trees to color! Let's each grab a green pastel. Phew, it takes a long time but we feel pretty proud of ourselves. I like to color the girls too, and give them pretty clothes. |

Today we go to the Miami International Wine Fair.
It is one of the largest wine tradeshows in America, featuring over 85,000 sqft (~8,000 m2) of exhibit space with nearly 500 producers showcasing more than 1,500 wines from 20 countries. I wonder if anyone can drink all that??? There are a lot of booths and many people. We try out some Portuguese wine. Which reminds me of the good time I spent in Portugal. Wine from Florida! But Florida is too hot to grow grapes so the wine are made from other fruits, such as mango and lychee. We also attend some wine classes. This one is my favorite, sushi and sake! |

Today is the Mid Autumn Festival in China. It is a night when the moon is supposedly the roundest in the year, and a day for families to gather together and celebrate. Indeed there are a lot of poems written about wanderers looking at the moon and thinking about the birthplaces and families they left behind.
There is also a saying that overseas the moon is rounder and bigger. Hmm... I don't know about that. It looks the same to me. But seeing the moon does make me miss my mommy back in Hong Kong very much. Seeing I am homesick, to cheer me up, my host offers us a little moon cake party. First we pick the tea, for mooncake goes very well with a cup of hot tea. I am happy to see all the moon cakes! This mooncake is made with lotus seed. All the mooncakes have an egg yolk in it, the round yolk representing the moon. They say that during the Mongolian invasion, rebels hid messages inside the cakes and passed them around, thus succeeding in overthrowing the Mongolian rulers. Yum yum... Hi Mommy did you eat some mooncake too? |

Guess what kind of restaurant we go to today?
You are right! It's Korean! First we order some nice Korean beer. As typical in Korean restaurants, the waitress bring us a lot of small appertizer dishes, called banchan. There are various kinds of kim chee and pickles, some tofu cake, bean sprout, salad and more. This is an appertizer dish ddeokbokki, made with some rice cake, clear noodles, vegetables and other ingredients. It's rather spicy. Next comes the grilled meat. This place uses authentic charcoal instead of gas stove. We put the meat on top and make sure it's grilled nicely. With all the spicy and hot food we need some cold dessert! Mommy, I am so excited today!! My host tells me that we are going somewhere vey special. I wonder what it is?
We are going to Pelican Harbor! Wow. I wonder if there may be any pelicans there? I ask my host but she just smiles and tells me to be patient. The sign says that they have a bird sanctuary here. I want to go visit!! Next we spot a van with a picture of a pelican. The Seabird Station is a non profit group to rescue and rehabilate animals, especially sea birds. Oh, I wonder if they have pelicans here??? I am getting so excited!!! Oh THERE IS A REAL PELICAN!! I go by and say hi but I am so nervous I may look a bit silly to him. But he is very nice and welcome us and they show us around. These pelicans are inside the cage while they recover from injuries. Most of these injuries are caused by entanglement with fishing lines, ingestion of plastic and other manmade garbage. Well, I hope you get well soon! This pelican is here to visit his girlfriend. He says he has been visiting everyday and can't wait till she gets out of the hospital. It's dinner time! All the birds get very excited. Looks like there is quite a line. Here is a different kind of bird. We don't know its name but it has beautiful blue eyes. I feel so happy that I have one of my dreams fulfilled! Goodbye my pelican friends!! After the visit we wander around the harbor a bit. Oh look, a pelican boat! I want to fly over there and join the seagulls, and maybe just claim one of the posts as mine and just sit there and enjoy the harbor. Oh look, there is mother duck with her babies!! They are so cute! Oh no, there are some American black vultures. I am not sure if what they like to eat but they sure look very scary!! Um, I think it's time to go home!! |

Today we head out for Central Florida. It's four hours drive from Miami. Halfway through we stop by a rest area. We find a booth selling Florida grown citrus. Florida is famous for its oranges and grapefruits. They have samples for us to try too!
We check out the brochures and tourist guides. Here we are, at Downtown Disney! This is Disney Quest, an indoor game center. There are a lot of interesting stores to visit. This is the Mary Poppins balloon ride that can take you up in the sky. There is a Planet Hollywood restaurant in Downtown Disney. There is some excitement on the water. There is a dragon boat race going on! Wow it's a big dinosaur!! Or rather, it's skeleton. It's a T Rex restaurant. Let's go in and check it out! You can make your own dinosaur here. I see another dinosaur... and this one is not just bones. It's moving around. Very scary... Hi Buzz, what's up! Hello Mr Potato Head! Let's go check out the toys!! Wow true to its name, there are a lot of toys here! Look, a lot of pelicans!! You can get your own customized light sabre here. You can also play with designing your own Mr. Potato. Look I get fingers!! We get to say hi to Winnie the Pooh and his friends. He shares some honey with us. It's Halloween coming up so there are lots of Halloween stuff. We got lost. Donald Duck is kind of grumpy but Donna has been very nice. Oh wow Mommy you see this? It's a picture of Hong Kong made with Legos!! Mocha says that he went to Hong Kong too but there was no dragon in the water. What a silly moose. Anyway, I miss you, I miss Hong Kong. We meet Blinkey, the Lego dragon. Wow these dogs are built with Legos too! It's amazing how they can build all these with little lego bricks! Well, we try, but I don't think we can. Maybe I'll go in for some Christmas shopping! Can you find me in the picture? We try the carousel ride which gets me my dizzy. In the art gallery, an artist is there to do some demostration. You can see him hiding behind the drawing board. There is a TV screen so you can see what he is drawing. The gallery has a lot of beautiful artworks. This is a very huge store that sells all things Disney. We spend a lot of time shopping there. Let's get a little penny souvenir! |
||

Today we are heading home already. I am a bit disappointed that we don't get to visit more of Disney but we have to go back. However, we will have breakfast first.
We arrive at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. We are having an African buffet. I have never tried African food before! Let's go get some food. I get some POG (Pineapple Orange Guava) juice, some quinoa, some egg with curried meat, ham, grilled tomato and other stuff. They also have an African fruit salad which is very delicious, and other more standard breakfast fare such as French toast, cereal, muffins, croissants and omelette. Even their restroom is nicely decorated with woven baskets. This is where the guest rooms are at the lodge. After breakfast we have a bit of time for shopping. There are a lot of outlet malls here so we have a good time. Oh, I want to get a postcard to send home. |

Wow we are travelling again! Today we are flying in the airplane. First, we arrive at the Miami airport.
Look! A giraffe in the airport! Oh, it's about the Miami Metro Zoo. Geez, I was wondering how a giraffe can fit into an airport. Okay, all buckle up and ready to take off! We arrive at the Chicago O'Hare airport. The weather looks rainy and gloomy. We are not staying in Chicago but decide to check out the information anyway. Maybe one day I will be really visiting for a few days. Wow, a lot of apples!! Dipped in caramel, chocolate and more... They sure look delicious! I wonder where we are heading to? |
||
tarepanda Posted Nov 8, 2009, 5:05 am |
We arrive at our destination. It's Kansas City!
We ride to the hotel. Our host tells us that Kansas City is in two states. The airport is in Missouri but our hotel is in Kansas. Ebba and Bally are especially excited as they both want to visit many states. Unfortunately Bally gets so tired from all the travelling and doses off when we cross the state line. |

Today we attend the BookCrossing UnConvention. BookCrossing is an online community of readers who send books to travel around (like us toys) to see where the books end up.
At the beginning of the UnConvention, we enjoy a delicious cake to celebrate. We take a picture with Ballycumber, the BookCrossing mascot. This morning we sit very still to listen to some speeches. First are two speakers who are authors. They talk about the books they write and how they get them published. Next comes a presentation of BC in DC for 2011. It will be the 10th anniversary of BookCrossing so it will be a big gathering with lots of fun. It sounds very interesting. He is a Very Very Important Person. Bruce is the co-founder and CEO of BookCrossing and has made a surprise visit,;everybody is excited that he is here. We get some tickets for the raffle drawing. I get to put a ticket in. Hmmm, there are so many good prizes I don't quite know which one to choose! This is a mobile OBCZ by crrcookie. She goes around in it to give away books!! We also have a book buffet table where there are lots of books, and people can take and leave any book they like. We have fun looking at the books. Bally finds a monkey book, and Ebba find a Bunnicular book. My host is very impressed. She says that she has heard of a lot of themed released but this is the first themed catch she knows of. Mocha try to look for a moose book too but the closest we can find is a reindeer book. I think The Pelican Brief would be perfect, but all we see are four copies of The Firm. While we get busy looking for books, someone took Ebba's Bunnicular so she is not too happy in this picture. Lunch is, of course, the famous Kansas City BBQ. Mocha is very excited to see the Tim Tams. He says that it is a famous cookie from Australia and one of the members from Australia, Skyring, brings them to the BC conventions whenever he attends, so it becomes sort of a tradition. I try it it's quite delicious and I am told that now Pepperidge Farm imports them during the winter time. Discoverylover is from New Zealand, and she makes sure everybody wears a pretty New Zealand tattoo. I want one too but I couldn't get it on... We also stop by the BookCrossing store to get supplies like book labels, bags and stickies. At night we visit a place called The Legends. One of the BookCrossers gives a book to this Indian chief. Look, here is another T Rex restaurant. We just went to one last Saturday in Orlando, so it's hard to believe that there are only two of them in the whole country! We release a book by Rex Stout in front of this T Rex. Follow the yellow brick road, follow the yellow brick road... We're off to see the Wizard, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz! |
||
tarepanda Posted Nov 11, 2009, 2:59 pm |
We are very excited because we are going on a Reverse Scavenger Hunt!!! We have never play this game before and it sounds like a lot of fun. We have a list of places we have to find and release books at.
The most important thing of course is to have the books for release. No worry we have lots of books. We are ready to set off!! Hmm... I think this is the unofficial Bally car? We arrive at the Country Club Plaza. ] Behind us is the Cheesecake Factory. The BookCrossers are all gathered together for the game. Everybody is carrying a lot of books. We can feel the excitement in the air! The first book we release is by the J.C. Nichols Fountain. It's called Hole in the Water. We find a horse statue in front of PF Chang and put a book with a unicorn statue by it. Then we drop off Nickel and Dimed at the bank. I try to help put a book by this statue. But kyaaa! I almost get stabbed! Next we climb into the eagle nest to release Like Water for Chocolate in front of this chocolate shop. Poor Ebba is almost scared out of their wits but I find it quite a thrill to be in an eagle's nest! Wow I didn't know that wild releasing can be so wild, so dangerous! We decide to do some tamer releases to calm our nerves a bit. We find this guy by a McDonald's. Ebba is more curious in the guy's burger though, being a rabbit and always hungry. Kansas City sure looks very different from Miami. We leave a dog book, Why We Love The Dogs We Do, at Three Dogs Bakery. It's a bit tiring so we rest a bit. We put in another book here, Three for the Chair. Hmm, they should title the book Four for the Chair. We also leave a book at the clock tower of Fogo de Chao. It's a Brazilian restaurant. We have a matching theme book called Zero Hours. This book actually gets picked up by someone from Alabama! Isn't that cool? We have been so busy running around the plaza we barely have time to notice the beautiful scenery. After a very fun and exciting morning running around the Plaza, we go on to the Hallmark City Center. Unfortunately, the Hallmark Visitor Center is closed. But we get to shop around a bit. Here are some arts done by local children. We also find a nice tea shop. The shopkeeper (who came from Fujian, China) invites us to sit down for some tea. He keeps pouring cup after cup we drink so much we need the restroom! We visit the Crayola store. Everything is so colorful!! Oh look! We catch a BookCrossing book! It's lying on the bench in front of the Crayola store. Amazing!! Hallmark is headquartered in Kansas City. We couldn't find a pay phone at the hunt (which is a bonus point), but finally here's one. We leave Superman Returns here for Superman to pick up. Wow this is a huge cinnamon bun. And a huge ice cream! Hey are we in Texas? We are tired so we sit down and watch the fountain a bit as it dances along with the music. The trees here are gorgeous in their colors indeed. Look, we are leaving Kansas! Missouri welcomes us!! After this we have some time before dinner, so we visit a coffee shop called Latteland. There is an OBCZ (Official BookCrossing Zone) here, where bookcrossers bring free books and leave here for people to take. We leave some books and take a few. Then at night, we go to eat... you guess it, BBQ! It is very delicious. Kansas City is famous for its BBQ. American BBQ is different from Hong Kong BBQ. Over here, BBQ means that the meat is slowly cooked and smoked in a pit for 10 hours or so, and the Hong Kong style BBQ of grilling food over fire is called grilling. We also get to know Ringbear. She has traveled around a lot with Skyring, and tells us of all the great BC gatherings she has been to. We tell her she must join ToyVoyagers so we can stay in touch. It's like Facebook for toys! I hope we will see her soon on TV. |
||
tarepanda Posted Nov 11, 2009, 3:10 pm |
It's time to go home. We are heading to the airport.
We arrive at Dallas Fort Worth airport, that is in Texas. We have a very short time to change planes so we could not find better places to pose for our very short visit to Texas... It is very rainy here. We are lucky that it only rains in places we are just stopping for transist, and are able to enjoy nice weather in Kansas. Wow we have taken off! Now above the cloud we can see the sun again. It's night time when we arrive back in Miami. |

Today we are going to Key West to celebrate Halloween. Its Fantasy Fest is a ten-day celebration that includes street fair, costume contests, parades, and lots of parties, and is the biggest Halloween celebration in the U.S. with over 100,000 visitors.
The word "Key" comes from the Spanish word Cayo meaning island. The Florida Keys are a long chain of islands south of Miami, connected by over 40 bridges like a necklace of pearls that runs 127 miles. Some of them have funny names like Duck Key, Fat Deer Key, Knockemdown Key, Fiesta Key and even a No Name Key. We pass by this Dolphin Research Center at Marathon Key. This is Pigeon Key. When they were building a railroad to connect Key West to the mainland between 1908 and 1912, there were at times as many as 400 workers housed on the island. Today there is a museum. We are now on the Seven Mile Bridge. This is part of the old bridge that used to connect the islands but was destroyed by a hurricane in 1935. In the movie True Lies by Arnold Schwarzenegger, near the end there was a scene in which a bridge was blown up. The movie was shot on this old bridge. After almost three hours we finally arrived at Key West, the largest of the keys. The houses are typical Old Florida style. This is a conch trolley. Look Mommy, I am at the southernmost point of the United States!! My host wants to take me here because I have been to the southeastern point of Europe so it's only fitting I take a picture here as well. Are you impressed? Nearby is the Southernmost House. As well as the southernmost hotel. Key West is also called The Conch Republic. In 1982, when the U.S. border patrol set up road blocks south of Miami to control illegal immigrants and drugs, the citizens of the Keys complained. The mayor complained that if the U.S. government is treating them like foreigners, they may as well declare themselves an independent nation. Hence, the mayor was proclaimed Prime Minister of the Conch Republic and declared war against the U.S. This is their city hall, ahem, Office of the Secretary General. Unfortunately the office is closed so we cannot get a passport... |

We find some chicken living at the house next to where we stay. There are a lot of free roaming chicken in Key West.
We go on to Duval Street, the main street in Key West. The street is closed off to traffic and many people are walking around in costumes, even though it's still early. A lot of people walk around with no clothes , or very very little clothes, on. It makes me blush!! Here is a man weaving baskets from palm leaves. This Conch Republic souvenir shop looks interesting. Wow, look! Lots of pelicans!! This church is a famous landmark. This is another landmark, though I forget what it is... We find people with body painting around the street. A lot of shops are advertising body painting. Here is another shop. The two ladies in the front just have their bodies painted. Can you tell? This man has his suspenders painted on. Here is another pair of artists at work. They do a very beautiful job. These guys are wearing some funny pants. The Hard Rock Cafe is all decked up for Halloween. We see these colorful beads and want to get some, but our host says don't worry, when the floats parade begin, we will get lots of them. I think these paintings are very beautiful. We see this on the street. It will be one of the floats tonight!! Look there is a huge octopus!! I think it has eaten the green parrot! We see this sign. It's the beginning of United States Highway 1. If you take this road, it will take you all the way up north to Maine, although what was a highway is now a very slow scenic route. We cross the street and what do we get? The end of US1!! This restaurant is very nicely decorated too. Sloppy Joe's is an old restaurant/bar that opened on the first day the Prohibition was lifted. The name was suggested by one of its regular customers, Ernest Hemingway. He was, I am told, a very famous writer who wrote the book Old Man and The Sea. The old man visited here too! We pass by the art museum. Looks like there are many interesting shops but they are all closed because of the parade tonight. This shop has won the award for the best Key Lime Pie. It's a dessert that is famous here, made using Key Lime, which is only the size of a golf ball and yellow in color, unlike regular lime. As Key West is so far away from mainland, in the olden days condensed milk in cans were the only milk available, and this dessert is made with adding lime juice to condensed milk. This year's Fantasy Fest theme is vampires, so there are lots of them around. Help!! Mommy, Help!! Another spooky place! We then go on to check out the floats, as it will be difficult to take pictures of them in the dark. Hmm, looks like the vampires are really thirsty for some donated blood... They all look very nice indeed. Finally it's time for the parade! Just as our host has promised, people on the floats throw a lot of beads at us. We get so many in different colors. That's quite a halloween celebration!! |

Hi Mommy! Today I meet a very famous person. Guess who it is?
Can you recognize him?? It's the ex-vice president of United States, and Nobel Laurette, Al Gore!! He appears at the Miami Book Fair to talk about his new book on global warming. I am so excited to meet such a celebrity!!! I didn't get to shake hands with him but still I feel very proud, I don't think many toys get to take pictures with such celebrity. |

Hello,
Today we went to "Ancient City" (in Thai called Muang Boran)
The City Wall and Gate Ancient City is very large so we used a tram to look around. Sanphet Prasat Palace, Ayutthaya: the principle palace in the early Ayutthaya period A view from Sanphet Prasat Palace The Chom Thong Palace Hall, Ayutthaya: one of the palace halls that lies within the grounds of Wat Phra Si Sanphet Dusit Maha Prasat Palace (The Grand Palace): an audience hall, where affairs of the state were conducted and royal ceremonies performed The weather was so hot, let's relax for a while This is the actual place where the owner of Ancient City lived. Then we came to shopping at the Old Market Town. This is a barber shop in very old fashion. I would like to try but I have only little hair These are Thai musical instruments It looked like I can see Thailand in the past within a day It's cool Thai style, they live near the river. We needed some relax after walking all day. Before we went back, we did not forget to you a postcard Miss you, Baby Lican |

Hi mom,
Today we went to General Post Office. There was an exhibition for 70th Anniversary of General Post Office Building. These are Thai classic post boxes from the past. And this is a real bicycle that a postman used Miss you, Baby Lican |

Hi mom,
Today we went to MILLION TOY MUSEUM by Krirk Yoonpun in Ayutthaya. The building is not big but good nice. Inside the museum is quite small and not so many people today. Here, they have many many toys from around the world. I had never seen a lot of them before. This is a board saying about the owner of this museum - Krirk Yoonpun Is this cool? I guessed this is a mascot of this place. There is a shop. Prim bought some souvenirs for her friends and also bought postcards for us to send to you Chill out before going home. On the way back home, happy day. Bye bye, Baby Lican |
