The lighthouse of happiness is located a bit further of Anyksciai center, near the road Anyksciai – Moletai, place called “Liudiskiai”. It is a grave of other writer Jonas Biliunas (1879 – 1907). Before death he wrote that he would like to be buried at the place, where "I could see a village, where I spent young times”.

The grave monument is 14 meters high, that is more, it was built on a hill in forest (1958). It symbolized writer’s “Lighthouse of Happiness”.

There is a tradition to think about a wish, count steps going up to “Light of Happiness”, when wishes come true…

I won´t tell you my wish  :cyclops:
And you have to count the steps on your own  :p

Next interesting place is also close to Anyksciai.
Puntukas: the second largest boulder in Lithuania.
wolfiecheers

Posted Oct 10, 2012, 9:02 am
hehe... just kidding  :p

That is the right picture!  B)

Puntukas is a glacial erratic—it was brought by glaciers during the last glacial period probably from Finland. It measures 6.9 metres (23 ft) in length, 6.7 m (22 ft) in width, and 5.7 m (19 ft) in depth (including 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) underground). It weighs about 265 tons. Puuuhhh, that is really heavy!  :o

In 1943, sculptor Bronius Pundzius engraved portraits and quotes from last wills of Lithuanian pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas for the 10th anniversary of their deaths during the transatlantic flight with Lituanica.

A local legend has it that velnias (a devil in the Lithuanian mythology) carried the stone to destroy the Anykščiai Church, however a rooster crowed. The devil disappeared back into the underworld, leaving only Puntukas behind.

One of the  most mystic places! The hill of crosses "Kryziu Kalnas" close to Siauliai, is a site of pilgrimage. The precise origin of the practice of leaving crosses on the hill is uncertain, but it is believed that the first crosses were placed on the former Jurgaičiai or Domantai hill fort after the 1831 Uprising. Over the centuries, not only crosses, but giant crucifixes, carvings of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The exact number of crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 55,000 in 1990 and 100,000 in 2006.

When the old political structure of Eastern Europe fell apart in 1918, Lithuania once again declared its independence. Throughout this time, the Hill of Crosses was used as a place for Lithuanians to pray for peace, for their country, and for the loved ones they had lost during the Wars of Independence.

Most recently, the site took on a special significance during the years 1944–1990, when Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union. Continuing to travel to the Hill and leave their tributes, Lithuanians used it to demonstrate their allegiance to their original identity, religion and heritage. It was a venue of peaceful resistance, although the Soviets worked hard to remove new crosses, and bulldozed the site at least three times (including attempts in 1963 and 1973).

On September 7, 1993, Pope John Paul II visited the Hill of Crosses, declaring it a place for hope, peace, love and sacrifice.

I declare it a place of Lithuanias FREEEEDOOOOM!  B)

Now I proof that the european geographical centre is NOT in Germany!

It is close to Vilnius!

After a re-estimation of the boundaries of the continent of Europe in 1989, the French National Geographic Institute determined that the Geographic Centre of Europe is located at 54°54′N 25°19′E. The method used for calculating this point was that of the centre of gravity of the geometrical figure of Europe. This point is located in Lithuania, specifically 26 kilometres (16 mi) north of Vilnius, near the village of Purnuškės.

Up on the Gediminas Castlehill in front of the Tower.

Gediminas' Tower is an important state and historic symbol of the city of Vilnius and of Lithuania itself. It is depicted on the national currency, the litas, and is mentioned in numerous Lithuanian patriotic poems and folk songs. The Flag of Lithuania was re-hoisted atop the tower on October 7, 1988, during the independence movement that was finalized by the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania on March 11, 1990.

And what an incredible overview of Vilnius you have up here!

A short walk down the hill and we got to the cathedral square. It is the main square of the city's downtown, right in front of the neo-classical Vilnius Cathedral. It is a key location in city's public life, situated as it is at the crossing of the city's main streets and reflecting the city's diversity. Regularly held at this site are fairs and gatherings of townspeople, military parades, religious and official public events, attractions and large concerts, New Year’s salutes and exhibitions. It is not merely the most lively and important location in the city, but is also one of the most significant and widely known symbols of Lithuania.
wolfiecheers

Posted Oct 10, 2012, 8:35 pm
Other notable feature of the square is the monument to Gediminas, one of the first rulers of Lithuania.
According to legend, Gediminas dreamt of an iron wolf howling on a hilltop and consulted a pagan priest for its interpretation. He was told: "What is destined for the ruler and the State of Lithuania, is thus: the Iron Wolf represents a castle and a city which will be established by you on this site. This city will be the capital of the Lithuanian lands and the dwelling of their rulers, and the glory of their deeds shall echo throughout the world".

Trakai is a historic city and lake resort in Lithuania. It lies 28 km west of Vilnius. Because of its proximity to Vilnius, Trakai is a popular tourist destination.

The city has a significant Karaite population. We went there for lunch!

The first settlements appeared as early as the first millennium A.D. The town, as well as its surroundings, started developing in the 13th century in the place of Senieji Trakai (Old Trakai).
According to a legend after a successful hunting party, Grand Duke Gediminas discovered a beautiful lake-surrounded place not far from Kernavė, then capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and decided to build a castle in the location. That is how the Old Trakai Castle was built in Senieji Trakai.

Lunch at the Karaims, which are a small Turkic-speaking religious and ethnic group resettled to Trakai by Grand Duke Vytautas in 1397 and 1398 from Crimea, after one of his successful military campaigns against the Golden Horde.

The Karaim cuisine has retaken its traditions up to the present undoubtedly due to their industry. One of the most famous non-ritual dishes known not only to Karaims is kybyn (pl. kybynlar). It´s a leavened paste cake having the form of an half-moon and the lamb or beef filling; it is baked in the oven.

And in Trakai I got my own beer-glass!  :D

A new great experience for me: Bodu Beru!  B)
It is performed by about 20 people, including three drummers and a lead singer. The prelude to the song is a slow beat with emphasis on drumming, and dancing. As the song reaches a crescendo, one or two dancers maintain the wild beat with their frantic movements ending in some cases in a trance.
Boduberu is usually sung after a hard day's work. The location is up to the performers. Today, Boduberu is an important item of entertainment at stage shows, celebrations and festivals.

This evening I fell in love with that type of music. It´s the authentic sound of the Maldives!

Here you can see the Reichstag building.

The term Reichstag, when used to connote a diet, dates back to the Holy Roman Empire. The building was built for the Diet (German: Reichstag) of the German Empire, which was succeeded by the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic. The latter devolved into the Reichstag of Nazi Germany, which left the building (and ceased to act as a parliament) after the 1933 fire and never returned; the term Reichstag has not been used by German parliaments since World War II. In today's usage, the German word Reichstag (Imperial Diet Building) refers mainly to the building, while Bundestag (Federal Diet) refers to the institution.

Hello, It´s me Dorschdi. Now I tell you something about my trip to Inzell for the Ice- Speedway 4 th Final. On the 16th of March I went with my friends Hans-Peter and Alexander to Inzell.
So there is a picture from our arrival.

Then we walked around the Max Eichner Arena and looked for interesting things about Speedway.
After that we drank our first beer. It was absolutely delicious.
Now it was time for the gladiators. The riders were presented and the race began. After 3 ½ hours the first day of Ice - Speedway action was finished.
So we went in a small nice restaurant for dinner and of course with a good beer. After that I was very tired and went to bed.
Early next morning I woke up took a shower and drank a beer. So I was prepared for the breakfast. Our host made a very awesome breakfast with meatloaf, cheese, self- made jam and everything we wanted.
After that me and my lovely friends travelled to the Arena. At the Arena in the paddock I met the 2nd Team- Worldchampion of 2003 Günther Bauer. Then the autograph session began and we wrote and wrote and wrote a long long time until Günthers and my paws hurt. After the writing he showed me his absolutely amazing bike and we went for a short ride.

Now it was 1 o´clock, time for beer and to get ready for the race. So we went into the Arena and took our seats. At 2:00 p.m. the race began. Today it was a very dangerous race of hard fighting’s against the ice-gladiators. My friend Günther Bauer reached the semi-final and finished thierd. So he was out of the race, not bad because the Russian guys were too good for the rest of the world.
After this brilliant race me and my friends H-P and Alex visited a nice restaurant for dinner and a lot of beer. Of course we were in Bavaria. And we salute “cheers” for a beautiful weekend.

The most amazing trip was the view from the Burj Khalifa.
This gigantic tower is so big that you feel very insignificant in the near of it! :o

At the top I had an awesome view to Dubai. It was funny because all these skyscraper looked very tiny when I saw them from the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa :stare:

Wow! I´m impressed. The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain monument complex that is under construction on privately held land in the Black Hills, in Custer County, South Dakota. It depicts Crazy Horse, an Oglala Lakota warrior, riding a horse and pointing into the distance. The memorial was commissioned by Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder, to be sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski. It is operated by the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, a private non-profit organization.

Same day we travelled to Regensburg a city in Bavaria, Germany, located at the confluence of the Danube and Regen rivers, at one of the northernmost points of the Danube.
The large medieval centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here you can see me in front of the cathedral, which is an example of pure German Gothic and counts as the main work of Gothic architecture in Bavaria. It was founded in 1275 and completed in 1634, with the exception of the towers, which were finished in 1869. The interior contains numerous interesting monuments, including one of Peter Vischer's masterpieces. Adjoining the cloisters are two chapels of earlier date than the cathedral itself, one of which, known as the old cathedral, goes back perhaps to the 8th century. The official choir for the liturgical music at St Peter's Cathedral are the famous Regensburger Domspatzen.

First of all and very important: beer! You have to enjoy it in one of the many beergardens of the city...

And a must do: having a "weisswurst" breakfast, together with sweet mustard and a "weiss-bier"... mmmmmhhhhhhhh  :D

Weisswurst is traditionally manufactured early in the morning and prepared and eaten as a snack between breakfast and lunch—there is a saying that the sausages should not be allowed to hear the church bells' noon chime. Traditionally, Weisswurst may only be served until midday because preservatives are not used, the meat is not smoked, and hence the sausage is made fresh every day. Before modern refrigeration technologies, in summertime the sausages would go bad before nightfall. Even today, most Bavarians eat their Weisswurst before noon.

Huuuuunnngryyyy!

Best place to go:
The Historic Sausage Kitchen (German: Die Historische Wurstkuchl) is a 900-year-old building and is notable for its role in catering for the workers who built the Stone Bridge, which the kitchen is next to.

The kitchen still operates today, and serves 6,000 sausages to guests daily. Sausages are the only item on the menu and come in portions of six, eight or ten, along with sauerkraut and mustard.

The Walhalla is a hall of fame that honors laudable and distinguished people, famous personalities in German history – politicians, sovereigns, scientists and artists of the German tongue".
The hall is housed in a neo-classical building above the Danube River, east of Regensburg.

Me with King Ludwig I of Bavaria and with Sophie Scholl...

Sophia Magdalena Scholl (9 May 1921 – 22 February 1943) was a German student and revolutionary, active within the White Rose non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany. She was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the University of Munich with her brother Hans. As a result, they were both executed by guillotine.

Since the 1970s, Scholl has been celebrated as one of the great German heroes who actively opposed the Third Reich during the Second World War.

Hey friends! This weekend, I visited together with my host Sabine a beautiful town near my home village, the more than 2000 years old city of Speyer, in ancient times called Noviomagus, Civitae Nemetum and Spira. At Speyer, there is a lot to see:  the Kaiserdom, which is the biggest maintained Roman cathedral in Europe, the Altpörtel, an ancient tower of the city wall, the Jewish mikwe, beautiful churches like Gedächtniskirche and Dreifaltikkeitskirche, a marvellous Altstadt (old town) and a lot of more interesting things...
On saturday, I went with Sabines daughters Marie, Julia and Miriam to the flea market on the main street of Speyer, where everybody sold things they don't need anymore... I saw a lot of buddies of mine, what a great luck I have, that my parents will never ever sell me... :-)
On monday, which was a religious holiday called Pentecost, the family went to the Kaiserdom where Miriam and 80 other teenagers got the confirmation from the bishop, some catholic stuff... ;-)
Back home, I met a mega big buddy of mine, look at the picture, he's soooo huge... :-)
And finally, Sabine showed me about her hobby geocaching which is really an interesting thing... You can find geocaches all over the world, even at Fihalhohi (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=c742009f-0e0e-40f9-8f86-2157ac38e263) and of course at Haßloch (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=ab2c8fae-45a6-477b-8330-88b895227cad), too, somebody hided a cache container. Maybe I'll search this geocaches one day... The only thing I need is a GPS or a smartphone with GPS device.
A lot of geocachers have some kind of toy voyagers, too, they call them travel bugs (Reisekäfer). This items travel from cache to cache all over the world if the container is big enough to host them.
So, I spend a nice weekend with Sabine and her family at Speyer and I hope you enjoyed reading about my experiences here. Byebye and farewell Speyer says Dorschdi

But it has not as much visitors as the other cemeteries...

Everywhere in the villages people are celebrating the "débarquement".
Thousands of french reenactors are dressed in old uniforms, driving around with willys jeeps.

The day ended with the jump of many parachutists out of a C47.

I was very impressed and tried the same by myself...

Lutherstadt Wittenberg, is a city in the eastern part of Germany.

The importance of Wittenberg is its close connection with Martin Luther and the dawn of the Protestant Reformation; several of its buildings are associated with the events of this time. Various Luther and Melancthon memorial sites were added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1996.

Here you can see me in front of the Town Hall and Luther Memorial on the market place.

The Town and Parish Church of St. Mary's is the civic church of Wittenberg. The reformers Martin Luther and Johannes Bugenhagen preached there.

Since 1996 it has been a World Heritage Site.

On the way to the Schlosskirche.

The All Saints' Church, is also known as the Reformation Memorial Church — is a Lutheran church.
It is the site where The Ninety-Five Theses were posted by Martin Luther on 31 October 1517.

Imagine you had just broken the sacred laws, the Kapu, and the only punishment was death.  Your only chance of survival is to elude your pursuers and reach the Pu'uhonua, a place of refuge.  The Pu'uhonua protected the kapu breaker, civilians during the time of war and the defeated warriors.  No harm could come to those who reached the boundaries of the place of refuge.
