Miyajima is an island located off the coast of Hiroshima.
We visited Itsukushima Shrine, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If it was low tide, we could get closer to the Shrine Gate.
I saw a baby deer around the shrine. In Miyajima, many Sika Deers are wandering the streets. At night they go back to the mountain.

Hiyashi Udon (Cold Udon Noodles)
Big Hello from Japan :D
I was lucky that I joined to the tour to Miyajima. When I arrived in Japan, other TVs were about to leave.
Now I'm back to Takamatsu and it's lunch time.
Udon noodles is a special food of Kagawa prefecture. There are many ways to cook of Udon.
Today we eat Hiyashi Udon dipping soy sauce flavored soup with green onion.

Our train ran across the Seto Ohashi Bridge over the Inland Sea. And we came to Kurashiki-city, Okayama prefecture.
This area is kept the old city view of Tokugawa Shogunate period. (17th-19th century)
There are many historical houses beside the canal. These were once used as warehouse of cotton.
"Kura" of the city's name means warehouse in Japanese.

Takamatsu-city faces the Seto Inland Sea which contains more than 2000 islands.
I visited the shrine near the coast. It's a small shrine. Japanese as Shintoists worship everything. The deities exist everywhere. The deity of this shrine is a salt-pan (Shiogama in Japanese) for drying and making salt from sea water.

Without a doubt, Chinese food is one of the most popular international cuisines in the world. Here in Japan, there are many Chinese restaurants and we can eat good lunch in a reasonable price.

Hello!
I'm standing on the top of the mountain between 2 cities, Takamatsu and Sakaide. It's an amazing view of the Seto Inland Sea. Can you see the Seto Ohashi Bridge over the sea? Yes, you know that I got a chance to cross the bridge.
In mountain I saw a very strange statue of Ushi-Oni. It is a creature which appears in the folklore of Japan. :o

The old photo studio, the location of the scenes in the movie "Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World"
Hi Mummy!
We drove to the neighbor town Aji. This old photo studio was used a location in the movie. People in love visit here as a "holy" place :)
I hope to watch this movie.

This is Ritsurin Garden, a typical Japanese garden. It is located in the center of the city, among the modern buildings.
For 228 years long since 1642, the Matsudaira family, the Federal Lord of Takamatsu owned and maintained the garden. Today the garden is open to public.

I have arrived in Nowra, New South Wales - Australia!

I've missed the chance to visit Seattle - but my hosts husband made the house hospitable for me while I waited for my host to come back. Now that she's back - she's promised to take me to the whitest sand beach in the world - and some of the most beautiful beaches in the South Coast... whenever we can we will see some very beautiful Aussie beaches!

I'll have to write you again soon - although I've been here for a while I'm still sorta tired... it's crazy down here some days! But I wanted to let you know I arrived safely and will be posting again with some photos very soon! <3

Hello!

We weren't sure we could go out today... yesterday was pretty cool, windy and stormy outside... especially in some areas - so we kept warm inside the house... safe! You would never know though - especially with how it cleared up this morning... nearly blue skies... so we decided to go out.

When you are headed through Nowra (it's a bit of a transit city for people traveling through to get to other locations - or to be a mid-way zone between staying on the beach and not)... you will cross over a bridge - one bridge going one way, and another one next to it for the opposite lane of traffic. This bridge crosses the Shoalhaven River... it also splits Nowra into two parts... North Nowra (where Sara lives) and South, East and West Nowra... which is more of where the shops are located... but it's kinda quiet in North Nowra - which we don't complain about...

If you look closely, you can even see the purple trees blooming (because it's Spring in Australia) for the Summer months! Gorgeous!

Around 20 minutes drive from Nowra... is a beach which is called Huskisson Beach... one of Sara's favourite beaches. It isn't the whitest sand beach in the world - but it's one of the neighboring - which we will visit on another day... Huskisson is a small town and is known as the "heart of Jervis Bay" as it looks out from the opening of the bay - and you can see a point called Point Perpendicular, which depending on how long we stay - I might go visit as well... it's gorgeous here!

You would never know that it was stormy and yucky yesterday with how blue the water is... and how calm it is! It is quite windy, but the waves don't quite reflect that much do they... Sara can confirm that this beach isn't the best for snorkeling - but the bay itself has some amazing wildlife including some resident bottle nose dolphins that live here all year round... and is home to the humpback whale migration as they go north in the Winter and back south in the Summer after having their babies...

This is the first year that Sara's been living in the South Coast - so she is very much looking forward to the Summer months where she can enjoy the water... sometimes it's like getting in a warm bath it's so nice! We sat in the sand to show how white it is... even though this isn't even the whitest sand beach! Crazy!

Today we took another short drive - around 20 minutes or so again - to the closest lighthouse to Nowra - the Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse. Unfortunately we didn't have a whole heap of time, and it wasn't quite the day to go on an hour long walk around the point... so we went to see some views instead... we got down the hill and we sat on a small bit of land between an inlet and the ocean...

The photos don't really do it justice, although you can see how stormy and windy it is... the water was a lot more blue than it looks! It was quite beautiful - but definitely not the day to go swimming like we would have hoped... maybe next weekend, huh? It was kinda neat looking at the piece of land that sticks out where the lighthouse would be - we decided that in a few weeks we'll come back when we have a bit more time and do a bit more investigating... until then - it was kinda nice to see the view we did!

Hi mom, wow... I've been traveling around quite a bit already... this morning we woke up around 3am (ouch!) so we could go on a long drive... my host and her husband had some work to do up where they used to live - in a place called the Central West of New South Wales... so we came along for the ride. They were spending most of their working hours in a town called Orange - but we got to visit Bathurst - as honestly, Bathurst has more to see and do... all around it's a lot more interesting...

Bathurst is a town known for one thing - the Bathurst 1000 races which happen every October. They happen at a place called Mount Panorama. You'd never believe it - but you can actually drive on the track itself (so long as no races are going on)... it was pretty neat to see - and it's a pretty huge race in Australia that all Australians - and even some people internationally would know...

Sara was lucky enough to have enough time so we could stop and get a photo of us with the starting gate and a picture with the big sign on the side of the mountain. It was pretty neat none the less! There were still quite a few crowds just from the October races... it really splits the nation - as it's between the Ford and Holden car companies that are very popular down here in Australia...

Lastly we got a photo with a racing legend - Peter Brock - he died to a similar time to when Steve Irwin passed away. He's most known for the most amount of wins on the "Mount"... very popular racing legend... unfortunately we didn't have too much time, so we had to jump back in the car and continue on our way...

Next... we actually had to go across the starting gate to get here... we went to a place where is known to have kangaroos lounging around. As my host lived in this area for so long, this is a place she's always taken the toyvoyagers to see kangaroos... unfortunately as it has built up quite a bit with houses... they've been pushed out. It's made it quite sad actually...

However, we were really lucky, and we saw some kangaroos. I don't know how many there were... but there were more than I could count...  every direction I looked they were there... pretty crazy! One of them was even a lot closer to us, and when Sara came for a closer look he bounced off to be closer to his family...

How neat is that though, I went to Australia and saw some wild kangaroos!

As we were on the direction back to home... we decided to stop at another very touristy area - just West of Sydney in a place called the Blue Mountains is a famous natural monument called The Three Sisters... it gets absolutely flocked with tourists on a daily basis... well, we ended up taking the wrong road, and ended up on the opposite side of the area where we wanted to be. Then it popped up, just like that as we were driving to the *right* side of the road - The Three Sisters... without the crowds... nice!

So we jumped out of the car, and Sara held on tight to us, as it was a long way down from the lookout (glad I'm not afraid of heights, unfortunately Sara does have a slight fear of heights)... we went to the edge and got a panoramic view from the lookout, all with the famed Three Sisters of Australia!

The legend of the Three Sisters is below if you would like to know the history of the Three Sisters.

Quote:
Long ago in the Blue Mountains there lived three little Aboriginal sisters. They were Meenhi, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, whose Witch Doctor father was called Tyawan.

Only one creature was feared by all – the Bunyip who lived in a deep hole. When Tyawan had to pass the hole, he would leave his daughters safely on the cliff behind a rocky wall. One day, waving goodbye to his daughters, he descended the cliff steps. On top of the cliff a big centipede suddenly appeared and frightened Meehni, who threw a stone at it. The stone rolled over the cliff and crashed into the valley. Birds, animals and fairies stopped till as the rocks behind the three sisters split open, leaving them on a ledge.

The angry Bunyip emerged to see the terrified sisters. In the valley, Tyawan saw the Bunyip close to his daughters, so he pointed his magic bone at the girls and turned them to stone. The Bunyip then chased Tyawan, who found himself trapped, so he changed himself into a Lyre Bird. Everyone was safe, but Tyawan had dropped his magic bone. After the Bunyip had gone, Tyawan searched and searched for his bone – and he is still searching.

The Three Sisters stand silently watching him from their ledge, hoping he will find the bone to turn them back to Aboriginal girls.

As you look at the Three Sisters, you can hear Tyawan – the Lyre Bird – calling his daughters as his search for the lost bone continues.

It was quite a beautiful time to be visiting as well, as it was just about sunset... gorgeous! I wonder what other breath taking things Australia has to offer?!

Well, you may ask... how did I spend my Christmas... cooped up with everyone under blankets - it was a nice cool Christmas (probably not as cool as you would have experienced) but it was very cold and overcast, raining off and on... definitely not a day for beaches and BBQ's which is what Sara hoped it would be... it was nice to experience some cool days though, since we've experienced some scorchers...

On New Years Eve, we went out to a place called Kiama, it's a town with a few surf beaches, big waves and a fun holiday destination for a lot of people - when driving around we found a nice view and we got out of the car (it was VERY windy) and took a few photos... we then went down to the beach but were warned of the "blue bottles" that are in the water... pretty much electric blue jellyfish which really sting if you get them on you... we found one on the beach that Sara took a photo of...

Afterwards we went to Huskisson to watch some fireworks, and went home in time to watch the Sydney fireworks on the TV...  not too adventurous... we were all pretty tired by the end of it all... I hope you enjoy the photos... I will tell you the photos don't do justice to how blue the water was... gorgeous! There is more to see in Kiama though, so we will be taking another trip up there in the near future to explore further...

Today we went on quite the journey... we went to Victoria!

This is Sara's first time over the state border of New South Wales to Victoria.. so it was very exciting for her... funny enough, just as we got over the border - it started to rain... something that we haven't seen much of lately... so the moment we crossed the border, Sara got some photos of us with the "Welcome to Victoria" sign...

It is a very very short stay... but we will travel to the most remote town in Victoria, because of how far away it is from Melbourne... the closest town is Eden, which is back over the New South Wales border... more to come soon!
sararingham
sara.ringham@gmail.com

Posted Jan 20, 2013, 7:47 am
...after an hour or so of crossing the border, we hit a very small town called Mallacoota... it is a small town with only 972 people, which just about doubles during the tourist season (the Summer)... the town is it is 523 kilometres from Melbourne and 526 kilometres from Sydney... so quite remote... and the closest town is Eden, in New South Wales... which ultimately - is also a very small town, with only just over 3,000 inhabitants...

It started to absolutely pour down raining just after we crossed the border, and it didn't really stop until we left Victoria. Victoria is known as being quite wet, known as having a bit of a climate like England, kinda cold and rainy - in comparison to the rest of Australia... which is normally quite warm and hot.. especially as of lately...

So we went to some kind of pier, and we got some photos... but unfortunately we had some commitments to complete for the day - so we couldn't stay long... we quickly had to pick up and head back into New South Wales and get some work done... however, this isn't it for the day... there was still more to see!

Next stop was a town called Narooma... the first time Sara traveled here, her breath was taken away by the sheer beauty of the water as they crossed the bridge.. she's been back twice and the water didn't ever look quite as good.. so she was wondering if she was just going crazy... until today, when we went through... there was a view point just over the town, where you could see the beach and the inlet of water... and it was a beautiful sky blue... you wouldn't believe, the pictures don't due it justice...

Unfortunately, this again, wasn't our last stop... so after getting a few photos... we had to move onto the next stop. Also, just to note, it was VERY windy from where we were standing, so Sara found she had to keep a hold of us to keep any of us from going missing, or having a seagull take us...

We have had a few absolute scorcher days already... Monday (the 7th), a bush fire was lit around 30kms away from us... no real concern, however on Tuesday... it was 45'c (117'f) outside at the lowest... some areas got up to 48'c... like inside our house. The fire started on the eve of a day we were having a catastrophic fire warning around the Shoalhaven and Illawarra area... so, Sara was a bit disturbed by this. We lost a few mice (pets) from the heat in the house - even though we were doing our best to keep it cool...

Not only that, but there was a MASSIVE amount of wind... so the fire that was contained by Tuesday morning, was out of control by 2pm on Tuesday... and stayed that way for about a week. It crossed the Princes Highway and completely burned out all areas around the Princes Highway... thankfully no houses have been burned, and no lives have been lost... but even now, it's still burning, and has burned 9,102 hectares (91 kilometers squared)... it hasn't rained much this year so it's not a good thing and it means the fires are a lot harder to contain...

The area that the bush fire was most affecting was called Sussex Inlet - a town at the bottom of the bay... only a small town, but it actually was evacuated to an evacuation centre - thankfully the town wasn't evacuated at any point... the day the roads were opened back up, we went to Sussex Inlet... and saw that their fire danger rating was still "catastrophic" because of the proximity of the fire to their town... only about 6 kilometers away...

After we went to Sussex Inlet, we went up to Huskisson beach and got in the water to cool down... Sara noticed some floating black bits in the water and when she caught them she realised they were actually ash from the fire that would have been blown over... crazy!

As we were coming back from Victoria and Narooma... we had to drive through the area that the "Deans Gap" bush fire had gone through... West of Sussex Inlet, on last Tuesday it crossed the Princes Highway... and as I said, thankfully it hadn't taken any homes, or any lives... so while we were driving through at 100 kilometres an hour, Sara had to quickly get some snaps, so unfortunately were not in any of them - but Sara promises to make up for that in the near future...

The last photo may look slightly different from the others - but Sara took that photo so show what it should normally look like... or what it did look like before the bush fires came through. The second to last photo, you can see a sign that has been burnt out on the right hand side of the photo...

I will say, we drove through this area at around 5am, when it was still very dark - usually the headlights light up around the trees, which reflect some light back because of the white trunks... however, the burnt trees reflected nothing back, so it was just black... with the heavy smell of burnt eucalyptus...

On Friday... we had another one of those scorchers... it was again, 46'c (117'f)... although for some reason it didn't feel quite as hot. Maybe because we didn't have the severe wind... the wind last Tuesday was SO hot... I've never felt heat like that in wind before... felt like an oven... well, Friday felt like an oven too... however, we were able to go to the beach once we determined the animals were okay at home... we got to the beach to cool down... and then the "southerly" came through, meaning we all of a sudden got a huge few gusts of wind which quickly dropped the temperatures from in the 40's... to in the 20's... within about 30 minutes.. pretty crazy...

However, with the severe winds and heat... we actually had another bush fire start up... called the Barringella Creek bush fire... it is much much smaller.. and has only burned about 22 hectares... and is also currently 'being controlled'. This one is about 12 kilometers away from us... we were just thankful it became more or less under control sooner - as it is significantly closer...

If it's not obvious... we're having quite the Summer down here... and we're just hoping now for some good rain... Sara got a photo of us in front of a map from the Rural Fire Service showing the fires in our area... one of them is the tiny one, and that much larger one near the bottom is the Deans Gap fire we drove through a few days ago... Nowra - the city, is at the top in the centre of the photo...

Today we went to a new beach in the National Park, one that my temporary family don't visit in tourist season - it's called Green Patch, and it's nearby a large camping site, so it is very popular. We wanted to go snorkeling, but the weather wasn't the right type for that. This beach is famous because it has a "blood red river", which is red from all of the vegetation that is right next to the beach.

We decided to all get a photo together in the sand as well to show just how white the sand was... and funny enough, it's not even the whitest sand in the world... but nearby, so it is pretty white, and so fine that it actually squeaks when you walk through it... gorgeous!

More recently, my temporary mom and dad visited this beach to go snorkeling after a very wild weekend of weather (we actually had a mini cyclone start up less than a kilometer from where Sara lives - crazy)... and the red river ran into the beach... so the first few meters were also blood red... kinda yucky looking - wasn't the best weather for snorkeling - but still fun none the less... we stayed safely at home so we didn't get lost in that trip...

There's another update to come :)

After we got battered in the waves a bit (they looked calmer than they were lol) we went to Hyams Beach, which is another beach that my temporary family won't visit during the touristy time of the year... just because it is known for what it is - and therefore VERY popular.. this is the whitest sand beach in the world... the photos don't give it justice... it's beautiful!

The waves here were pretty rough as well it seemed and had a lot of pull... so when standing you had to use a lot of effort to even make any move into the water at all... and Sara's husband even broke his body board in one of the waves... crazy! But we got some photos, we had to be dug into the sand a bit so we didn't blow away as it was quite windy... but none the less - pretty neat seeing the whitest sand beach in the world!

Since visiting here, Sara has started some voluntary work experience at a local travel agency - so she has been very busy and told us to say she's very sorry about not updating regularly... but will get back into it now that the cooler weather is here and she has a bit more time in between working... but I'm safe and sound and I'll write again very soon! <3

Today was a very special day! We decided to take a trip down the coast and see a very special beach... known for one specific thing... kangaroos! Unlike most people think, there aren't many beaches that have kangaroos that reside on them - but Pebbly Beach is one of the places where almost all of the time there are kangaroos... if you look hard enough... this time we were lucky and one was out in the open - some others were visible... but behind some bush.

They're quite tame and you are allowed to get near them and give them a pat or a scratch behind the ear... and they are very inquisitive... however you do have to remember - they aren't tame, they are wild animals... so you have to respect if they don't want you near them... not to get near them... it was pretty neat though getting up close and personal...

On close inspection of this little roo, he looked like he had a cattle tick on his ear... we attempted to get him off - but couldn't fully get it off. We twisted it though so hopefully it'll drop off in the next few days... pretty nasty none the less! I hope you enjoyed the photos - more updates coming very soon!

Following the theme of Iconic Australia... we took a trip up farther north this time... to the top of the Illawarra where there is a now famous landmark called the Sea Cliff Bridge. It's only one of 7 of these type of bridges in the world... and on a nice day with calm seas, it's absolutely beautiful... honestly the pictures don't give it justice... the sea was very blue, and near the rocks straight down it was a very light blue colour - which you can only just see if you look hard enough in the photos...

Our host only visited this bridge once before and absolutely loved it - so this time she thought bringing the little TV's with would add something new to their travel logs... this bridge was actually featured in a commercial that was shown around the world which can be seen if you click here at about 40 seconds in.... on a more wet day obviously... which Wollongong is quite known for... people come to the bridge as it's a very big tourist destination in Wollongong and they walk along the length - which isn't that long actually... but it is very picturesque that's for sure!

Last stop for the day was the Kiama Blowhole which is another popular tourist destination for people visiting the South Coast/Illawarra region. It is really good on days where it's very stormy out as the blowhole absolutely "goes off" and will make quite the show for people that are willing to get close, or get wet... so probably better to visit on warmer Summer days... it's been cooling right down even though it's still Summer like weather with the clear blue skies and little to no rain...

They had to make a platform for people to stand on with the blowhole, as many many people have died here because they get too close to the blowhole and then get either sucked into the ocean or fall into the hole and get beaten up quite badly on the sharp rocks by the ocean... or whatever reason. None the less it's quite sad - but it just goes to show the power of the ocean... if you come here at the right time you can see whales or dolphins off of the blowhole... as the humpback whales migrate right past the blowhole... it's pretty neat!

Sara got two videos while at the blow hole... one of the blowhole itself which you can see if you click here and another around the side of the blowhole... where you can see a bit of Kiama the town itself... and of course the gorgeous Norfolk Island pine trees... and that you can see if you click here... the sun comes down a lot earlier now that Winter is coming... so much less of the day to enjoy yourself! Oh well! I hope you enjoyed my day out and I'll post again very soon!

Hi Mum!

Last stop for me in Australia... I'm about to head off to the post office now and I'm quite excited for my new journey ahead! I'm not exactly sure where I'm going as of yet - Sara says she'll keep it a secret - but says I'll really like it... as she's been there many times previously! So many neat things to see... she also says that I'm going up to Spring/Summer weather... pretty good since it's been yucky and rainy here the last few days!

I'm not scared though - I'm quite excited for my next stop! Write again when I'm back in the Northern Hemisphere Mum! Love you!

PS. I'm now at the post office - sealed up snuggly in a padded bag waiting for my flight out :)

We got the honor of going to Sauna night at Chloe’s aunt and uncles place in Humboldt, Michigan.
A sauna (SOW-na) is a room with a hot stove or coals that are heated by water to create a nice hot steamy room. It is a Finnish tradition to have saunas. It was very interesting and quite warm!
Hop, Mister Spike, Kitsune, Mr. Scrapes, Bullseye, Juulia and I had a blast taking in the sauna. =)

This is the Minneapolis City Hall. It occupies an entire city block and has about 680,000 gross square feet. The building is an architectural treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designed by Long and Keys Architects. The building also features a 15-bell chime and is the only American made set that can play the "Star Spangled Banner" in the original key. Every hour, quarter, and half-hour you will hear the bells of the tower. The bells were manufactured in New York and weigh from 300 to 7,300 pounds each -- over 14 tons total.

This building is the Hennepin County Court House. Little bit of information about it! It was pretty cool. The Hennepin County Courthouse, located in the Hennepin County Government Center, was completed in 1974. It was designed by John Carl Warnecke and Associates of San Francisco, with Peterson, Clark and Associates of Minneapolis. The masonry is the same carnelian red granite from Ortonville, MN, that was used in building the Minneapolis City Hall, where the courthouse used to be located. The diagonal braces of the modern building are steel sprayed with a fireproofing material to which a cream-colored porcelain-type material was fused. The building's total cost was about $50 million, with $1.6 million more spent after completion on making necessary window changes, fitting an additional floor for courtrooms, and installing glass walls on atrium floors and walkways.

This is the Public Safety building. It's a jail!! Here's some information Chloe09 told us about it! The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office operates the largest pre-trial adult detention facility (commonly called the jail) in the State of Minnesota. Jail facilities are located in two different buildings in downtown Minneapolis, but are treated as one facility:
The Public Safety Facility (PSF) has 330 beds for arrestees.
The City Hall (ADC) has 509 beds for arrestees.
On average each year, there are approximately 40,000 bookings at the jail. The jail is currently staffed for a capacity of 703 beds, and the average population in 2009 was 694. The jail has consistently earned the distinction of being accredited by the American Correctional Association for maintaining the highest standards of inmate custody and care.

This is the United States District Courthouse. The history of the judicial system in Minnesota begins in 1849 when the first territorial court term was held in Stillwater, Minnesota. The U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota was not established until nine years later when Minnesota became a State in 1858.

Minneapolis Central Library, located at 300 Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis, is the largest library of the Hennepin County Library public library system. It’s got 4 full floors of books, music and fun!! There is a coffee shop in there along with a little shop to buy books that the library no longer uses.
