Host's home, Germany - 1st December 2013

By: Susie's

Hi Mum,

Sunday was a special day. Because it was the  1st of December and the 1st of Advent (itís a coincidence that they fall on the same day).
The 1st of December means that we get to start with a special calendar that is used to count or celebrate the days in anticipation of Christmas.
Many take the form of a large rectangular card with "windows" of which there are usually 24: one for each day of December leading up to Christmas Day. One is opened every day leading up to Christmas. The calendar windows open to reveal an image, poem, or  a small gift, such as a toy or a chocolate item. What a nice tradition.
And the first of Advent is always the 4th Sunday that predate Christmas eve. Many Germans celebrate it with a Advent wreath which is made of fir branches some decoration and 4 candles; every Sunday in December, a new candle on the wreath is lit. Unfortunately Susieís couldnít get a nice wreath. So she just got some table decoration with one big candle.
But itís still nice and romantic.

XOXO
