Hämeenlinna, Finland - 3rd June 2012

By: emmakko

The weather has been cloudy and boring the whole day and no one had anything special to do, so my host mum took me and Suny to an exciting place called Varikonniemi. This place has a long history: it was inhabited already in the Iron Age, in the 19th century there was a sawmill in Varikonniemi and these days it's a popular place for walking, running, biking and just enjoying the exciting place.
There is lots of forest in Varikonniemi, and there are lots of old ruins in the forest! My host mum wasn't sure, but she thinks they are the ruins of the sawmill.

The whole forest was full of these things!

You may think that this place is located somewhere in the middle of the forest... Actually, the centre of the town is on the other side of the lake so this place is almost in the middle of this town!

We found this weird mosaic decoration in the middle of the ruins and wondered what it is but later we heard that the local artists have made art for Varikonniemi to make this place more beautiful. Unfortunately this mosaic decoration was the only piece of art we found.

Studying the list of different plants and trees of this area:

We found a tree that is so huge that none of us has seen a tree of that size before! Can you see me?

Suddenly it started raining heavily. We are safe but our host mum got soaking wet. She was a bit too big to crawl under the under the bench.

I know this place! Isn't it weird that it was raining on our side of the lake but the sun was shining on the other side?

I wasn't brave enough to go swimming today but I tried how cold the water is. Cold!
