Some people have hidden lunch boxes (or other containers) at various locations. These are listed on the Geocaching website with latitude and longitude co-ordinates. You need to be a member of Geocaching to see the exact co-ordinates. You can then download these co-ordinates to a GPS device (many smartphones have GPS and you can get apps). GPS devices may not be very reliable in, say, forests where you can't see the sky very well.
Anyway, the app should tell you how far you are away from the co-ordinates and which direction it is in. When you get near (perhaps within a metre or two), you may have to just use brains! Some are hidden under logs, in walls, hidden in camouflaged bags or even artificial rocks... When you find it, there should be a log book to sign, and then you can also log your find (or even if you didn't find it - you can say that you looked everywhere...).
Some boxes have room for little trinkets (e.g. small toys such as those found in Kinder eggs, or perhaps erasers, marbles, stickers....) but if you take something, you need to put something back in.
edited to add Geocaching website - available also in German!

Mira has arrived at her new host, another Postcrosser and Alfie should be with another Postcrosser!
Do not be afraid to say you would like to host one of my travelling toys!
Toys lost? Misty Rose Baconella Hoots Bubo Lintilla - on the lookout for replacements from charity shops.
I have taken on more activities/commitments/responsibilities... still adjusting and may be a bit slow with updates...

I should add that you can't place these just anywhere - hiding it or even looking for them can look a bit suspicious. You also need permission to place them (the land owner, or the council).
Geocaches are often placed in interesting places... with history or even natural beauty.
There are some geocaches that don't give you the full co-ordinates but give you a riddle. When I was writing up today's logs, I found out that there was a geocache near where we had been, but, it was a "puzzle" cache and needed some information from the children's story, A Series of Unfortunate Events. You work out the co-ordinates with clues given.

you need a permission to place them? I've never heard of that so far I wouldn't know whom to ask about that either, but I also don't think it's much of a problem if you are placing them outside in nature - they are little and hidden, you won't find trash lying around them (hopefully).
Guess that's at least how it is here, in Austria - most caches here are somewhere outside, not inside of buildings only.
Sure though .. if it's a bigger one and you want the people who are living close by to maybe have an eye on it for a bit .. might be handy too
