Lately the weather has been absolutely beautiful and has made for the perfect weather (when its not raining) to go geocaching. For those of you that dont know geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a GPS or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is most often described as a "game of high-tech hide and seek", sharing many aspects with orienteering, treasure-hunting, and waymarking.

My geocaching partner and I were thinking about placing a cache of our own. The canister we were thinking about using a decent size so we were gonna add items other than just a log book. Geocaching.com offers trackable items as well as travel bugs, but normally those are just metal tags. He suggested creating a new Toyvoyager to essentially release in the wild to make it more fun and personal.

I am alittle apprehensive about it, but what do you all think? Would it be a new twist to a wild release? If something like this was near you, would you be interested in seeking out the toyvoyager? Any other input?

I'm thinking it could be done, but people might confuse them for travel bugs.

If a cache like that was near me, I would definitely seek it out because of the ToyVoyager. I think though that people may confuse the TV with a Travel Bug. On the other hand, I think some people might find it and be intrigued and get into ToyVoyagers as well. Maybe you could try posting on the geocaching forums to get some additional feedback.

This is a bit off topic, but I was actually just wondering if anyone on here was also into geocaching since in a way it is similar to Travel Bugs :)

I was thinking about putting the tv in there with a small instructions like page explaining what to do if the finder is interested. I was also planning on posting the coordinates in the intro post for this voyager and then treat it as a Wild Release. There would be other items to swap as well.

I've never heard of anyone geocaching here in Aus, but I know that BunTraveler does participate and I think she may have left behind some TV's in some caches???

We think Geocaching is amazing - we sought out some of the caches that are hidden near to where we live. It was incredible, there was one that we had been walking past every day and never knew it was there.

As far as we know, it's fine to put TVs in geocaches, and in many ways it's safer than doing a completely wild release. On the geocaching site it talks about items that are placed in geocaches that are tracked on other websites - I don't think it's a problem for them.

The caches we found were quite small though, so it would probably have to be a small TV. But if we knew there was one in a cache, we'd definitely go and try to find it :)

Good luck!

I had the same idea about GeoCaching. I think that people who involve in GeoCaching are somehow similar nature like people interested in ToyVoyagers, don't you think? :)
I was thinking about releasing my TV to wild too and got this idea to put it in cache. It seems safer to me too.
I live about 500 meters from a cache we found with my brother (he is into GeoCaching) so I can control it from time to time if there were no updates... :cyclops:

So I placed my first geocache and added a wild release toyvoyager in it. I hope all goes well. Keep your fingers crossed!
